Download or read book The Compassionate Contrarians written by Catherine Amey and published by . This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although New Zealand's economy has long depended on the bodies and infant milk of animals, this country also has a hidden history of vegetarianism. While some early vegetarians were concerned with health, spirituality, and purity, others took a broader view, speaking out on issues that included peace, feminism, animal rights, socialism, prison reform, and the environment. Yet others set up cafes, organised picnics, and wrote cookbooks. The Compassionate Contrarians uncovers the quirks of the vegetarian experience in a land of meat and dairy. More importantly, it acknowledges the hard work and courage of a group of idealists who dedicated their lives to creating a more just world for all sentient beings."--Publisher information.

Download or read book After the War written by Stephen Clarke and published by Penguin Books. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kiwi soldiers fought for us in two world wars and other conflicts since. They put up with constant danger, discomfort, boredom, fear and pain. But what happened to them when they returned home? Who made sure they got a fair deal? The RSA! This is the story of an iconic by little-understood institution, from its beginnings during World War One right through to the twenty-first century. Wounded soldiers returning from the Gallipoli campaign saw a need to welcome and provide care for returning soldiers, as well as to honour those who would never return. And so the RSA was formed in 1916. Welcome, support and remembrance have always been at its heart. This book tells the RSA story, of its service in the community and place in New Zealand society for 100 years, and how it is changing to go on into the future."

Download or read book Garden Plants for Central Otago written by Ralph Markby and published by Longacre Press. This book was released on 2005-11-18 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central Otago is a region with extreme climatic conditions: and within the region itself climate statistics reveal differing rainfall, temperatures, and soil quality. This book gives prac-tical advice on which trees, shrubs and perennials may be grown successfully in Central Otago and the Lakes District. The region is booming: people are moving to Central Otago in droves from all over New Zealand. And they are planting gardens with all their favourite trees and shrubs only to find, after a dry autumn and harsh winter, that many plants have died. This guide is a showcase of plants which will thrive in this most beautiful and challenging area. Ralph Markby's horticultural experience has been gained over the past 40 years. He covers essential information on climate, average temperatures, average rates of rainfall, soil variations, and includes a list of 'favourite plants' which have been grown successfully in the region. After a short introduction to garden development where the author advises on planting a lawn, growing shelter from sun and wind, pruning, irrigation, compost and more, he moves on to his lists of suitable plants. This includes a section on trees for the smaller property, and trees for larger areas, a section on conifers, deciduous trees, shrubs, perennials, ground cover, climbers, roses, rock gardens and finally, a plant sourcing guide. There is also an extensive plant index. The book is illustrated throughout in colour with stunning photos from the author's own collection.
Download or read book Eugenics at the Edges of Empire written by Diane B. Paul and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the history of eugenics in four Dominions of the British Empire: New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. These self-governing colonies reshaped ideas absorbed from the metropole in accord with local conditions and ideals. Compared to Britain (and the US, Germany, and Scandinavia), their orientation was generally less hereditarian and more populist and agrarian. It also reflected the view that these young and enterprising societies could potentially show Britain the way — if they were protected from internal and external threat. This volume contributes to the increasingly comparative and international literature on the history of eugenics and to several ongoing historiographic debates, especially around issues of race. As white-settler societies, questions related to racial mixing and purity were inescapable, and a notable contribution of this volume is its attention to Indigenous populations, both as targets and on occasion agents of eugenic ideology.
