Book The Role of the Research Simulator in the Systems Development of Rotorcraft

Download or read book The Role of the Research Simulator in the Systems Development of Rotorcraft written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 20 years, flight simulators have become widely accepted as training tools. Moreover, research simulators have been used extensively by the fixed-wind industry in the design, testing, and certification of new aircraft. The rotorcraft industry, however, has been slow to use man-in-the-loop simulation to solve its design problems, primarily because of the difficulty of modeling complex rotorcraft for realtime simulation and because of the need for a wide-angle visual system for low-level flight. A joint U.S. Army and NASA program has been initiated to provide this simulation capability for exploitation by both government and industry. This paper, a status report of that program, discusses the potential application of the research simulator to future rotorcraft systems design, development, product improvement evaluations, and safety analysis. Book In Flight Simulators and Fly by Wire Light Demonstrators

Download or read book In Flight Simulators and Fly by Wire Light Demonstrators written by Peter G. Hamel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first complete account of more than sixty years of international research on In-Flight Simulation and related development of electronic and electro-optic flight control system technologies (“Fly-by-Wire” and “Fly-by-Light”). They have provided a versatile and experimental procedure that is of particular importance for verification, optimization, and evaluation of flying qualities and flight safety of manned or unmanned aircraft systems. Extensive coverage is given in the book to both fundamental information related to flight testing and state-of-the-art advances in the design and implementation of electronic and electro-optic flight control systems, which have made In-Flight Simulation possible. Written by experts, the respective chapters clearly show the interdependence between various aeronautical disciplines and in-flight simulation methods. Taken together, they form a truly multidisciplinary book that addresses the needs of not just flight test engi neers, but also other aeronautical scientists, engineers and project managers and historians as well. Students with a general interest in aeronautics as well as researchers in countries with growing aeronautical ambitions will also find the book useful. The omission of mathematical equations and in-depth theoretical discussions in favor of fresh discussions on innovative experiments, together with the inclusion of anecdotes and fascinating photos, make this book not only an enjoyable read, but also an important incentive to future research. The book, translated from the German by Ravindra Jategaonkar, is an extended and revised English edition of the book Fliegende Simulatoren und Technologieträger , edited by Peter Hamel and published by Appelhans in 2014.

Book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control

Download or read book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Book MBB Simulation Facilities Applied for Rotorcraft Research

Download or read book MBB Simulation Facilities Applied for Rotorcraft Research written by Peter Krauspe and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attitude in the rotorcraft industry towards simulator applications during helicopter development work has been changing fundamentally in the past decade. More and more demanding design requirements for future helicopter systems, and the efforts to replace current helicopter flying qualities criteria by new specifications allowing for mission-oriented handling qualities, have significantly upgraded the role of stimulation in the design process. Rapid advances in recent years in the level of sophistication and fidelity of modern ground-based simulators have been major contributors to this change. Man-in-the-loop real-time simulation for the design and system investigation of advanced aircraft is applied in the MBB fixed-base flight simulation center, both for fixed-wing and rotorcraft simulation. The simulation facility, which presently comprises a basic three channel CGI visual system with collimator projection, is being expanded by installation of a more powerful 8 channel CGI system with six light valve projectors providing an extended field-of-view on the inner surface of a spherical dome. The visual system takes into account various helicopter-specific requirements such as a topographical data base with highly detailed low level visual flight cues for NOE missions, sensor image presentation (e.g. IR, LLLTV) with selectable, and the selection of different moving objects superimposed on the scene. Book Rotorcraft Research at the NASA Vertical Motion Simulator

Download or read book Rotorcraft Research at the NASA Vertical Motion Simulator written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970 s the role of the military helicopter evolved to encompass more demanding missions including low-level nap-of-the-earth flight and operation in severely degraded visual environments. The Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) at the NASA Ames Research Center was built to provide a high-fidelity simulation capability to research new rotorcraft concepts and technologies that could satisfy these mission requirements. The VMS combines a high-fidelity large amplitude motion system with an adaptable simulation environment including interchangeable and configurable cockpits. In almost 30 years of operation, rotorcraft research on the VMS has contributed significantly to the knowledge-base on rotorcraft performance, handling qualities, flight control, and guidance and displays. These contributions have directly benefited current rotorcraft programs and flight safety. The high fidelity motion system in the VMS was also used to research simulation fidelity. This research provided a fundamental understanding of pilot cueing modalities and their effect on simulation fidelity. Aponso, Bimal Lalith and Tran, Duc T. and Schroeder, Jeffrey A.
