This book provides a critical introduction to the wide-ranging topic of NGOs and development. Written by two authors with more than twenty years experience of research and practice in the field, the book combines a critical overview of the main research literature with a set of up-to-date theoretical and practical insights drawn from experience in Asia, Europe, Africa and elsewhere. It highlights the importance of NGOs in development, but it also engages fully with the criticisms that the increased profile of NGOs in development now attracts. Non-Governmental Organizations and Development begins with a discussion of the wide diversity of NGOs and their roles, and locates their recent rise to prominence within broader histories of struggle as well as within the ideological context of neo-liberalism. It then moves on to analyze how interest in NGOs has both reflected and informed wider theoretical trends and debates within development studies, before analyzing NGOs and their practices, using a broad range of short case studies of successful and unsuccessful interventions. David Lewis and Nazneen Kanji then moves on to describe the ways in which NGOs are increasingly important in relation to ideas and debates about ‘civil society’, globalization and the changing ideas and practices of international aid. Major rural development programmes of the NGOs are agricultural programmes, health programmes, human resource development programmes, community development and industrial and trade programmes. Majority of the beneficiaries, non-beneficiaries, workers of NGOs and workers of other development agencies considered rural development works of the NGOs as effective for rural development. The objectives of the study are firstly, to analyze the role of NGOs in promoting sustainable agriculture. Secondly, to find on what extent NGOs are promoting awareness programmes and upgrading development facilities. For the present study, a few NGOs have been selected randomly for detailed investigation and relevant information was collected by personal visits. Some NGOs had involved successfully with organic farming system. But in this study, 6 NGOs were selected from Rivers State, Nigeria. The overall analysis of the study reveals that NGOs are very prominent in effective implementation of government programmes towards sustainable rural development through the third party activities in education, health, agriculture, community development, energy, environment, and waste, moral up bringing, youth empowerment and poverty alleviation.

Micro level in-depth empirical data on the activities of these northern NGOs are collected and analysed. Following the 1984/85 famine and drought in Ethiopia, international NGOs brought relief aid to Ethiopia and took part in its distribution as well. As the relief activities declined some NGOs moved into rehabilitation and later into development work with the intention of addressing the root cause of the problems, i.e. rural poverty. The book also examines NGOs not only as 'micro-operators' but also as social forces that influence macro development policies that affect the poor in a participatory and sustainable way.
