Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comedy of manners in five acts, The Rivals was Sheridan's second commercially produced play. The play is set in Bath in the 18th century, a town legendary for conspicuous consumption and fashion at the time. Wealthy, fashionable people went there to "take the waters", which were believed to have healing properties. Bath was much less exclusive than London, and provides an ideal setting for the characters. The plot centres around the two young lovers, Lydia and Jack. Lydia, who reads a lot of popular novels of the time, wants a purely romantic love affair.

Book excerpt: ...A preface to a play seems generally to be considered as a kind of closet-prologue, in which--if his piece has been successful--the author solicits that indulgence from the reader which he had before experienced from the audience: but as the scope and immediate object of a play is to please a mixed assembly in representation (whose judgment in the theatre at least is decisive, ) its degree of reputation is usually as determined as public, before it can be prepared for the cooler tribunal of the study. Thus any farther solicitude on the part of the writer becomes unnecessary at least, if not an intrusion: and if the piece has been condemned in the performance, I fear an address to the closet, like an appeal to posterity, is constantly regarded as the procrastination of a suit, from a consciousness of the weakness of the cause. From these considerations, the following comedy would certainly have been submitted to the reader, without any farther introduction than what it had in the representation, but that its success has probably been founded on a circumstance which the author is informed has not before attended a theatrical trial, and which consequently ought not to pass unnoticed..

Book excerpt: Richard Brinsley Sherian was a prominent British playwright and poet in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Sheridan also served as a Member of Parliament and he was the long-time owner of the London Theatre Royal. Sheridan is now best remembered for classic satirical plays such as The Rivals, The School for Scandal, and A Trip to Scarborough. The Rivals is a comedy of manners that was first performed in 1775. The play was Sheridan's first and it was very controversial at the time due to its bawdiness but is now seen as a true classic. The play is set in Bath and centers on two young lovers, Lydia and Jack.
