Download or read book The Revival of English Poetry in the Nineteenth Century written by Elinor Mead Buckingham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revival of English Poetry in the Nineteenth Century: Selections From Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats and Byron So far as the editor is aware, no good opportunity ex ists for carrying on this work in high schools. One of the poets is not represented in any of the ordinary collee tions of poems now in use as text-books, and no simple explanation of their position in the history of English poetry has been published. To offer such an explanation is the chief purpose of the Introduction in the present volume, which aims to give not only an elementary, but, at least for high schools, an adequate conception of the reawakening of the poetic spirit in this century. In addition, it is hoped that the student will makematerial, which will throw light not only upon the five poets as individuals, but also and especially upon their mutual influence and common sources of inspiration. The selection of poems has been determined in part by the desire to rouse this personal interest, in the hope that the student will be stimulated to read more fully in the authors' works. Book Routledge Revivals English Poetry in the Later Nineteenth Century 1933

Download or read book Routledge Revivals English Poetry in the Later Nineteenth Century 1933 written by B. Ifor Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1933, this study, which underwent revision in the 1960s, is a comprehensive survey of the verse of English nineteenth-century poets whose work appeared after 1860. A special feature is the full and critical treatment of minor writers. In no other book is their work so carefully evaluated. There is a full account of the minor Pre-Raphaelites, of James Thomson, the poet of The City of Dreadful Night, of Henley, Stevenson and George MacDonald. John Davidson is the subject of a long and revealing study. Evans suggests that poetry from the late nineteenth century is neglected in scholarly study, and that Victorian Romanticism deserves more attention than it has recently received.

Book The Retrospective Review 1820 1828 and the Revival of Seventeenth Century Poetry

Download or read book The Retrospective Review 1820 1828 and the Revival of Seventeenth Century Poetry written by Jane Campbell and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay had its beginning in an investigation of changing attitudes to seventeenth-century Pre-Restoration poetry during the English Romantic period. In the course of that research, Jane Campbell discovered that a relatively little-known periodical, the Retrospective Review, which was published in London from 1820 to 1828, appeared to have played an interesting part in the rehabilitation of the poets of the earlier period. This book, then, is an attempt to outline the history of this review, to place it against its literary background, and to assess its role in the critical re-evaluation of the poets of the earlier seventeenth century—an age to which the Retrospective’s contributors and their contemporaries looked with fascination as well as with an affectionate feeling of kinship.

Book Nineteenth Century Literature in Transition The 1880s

Download or read book Nineteenth Century Literature in Transition The 1880s written by Penny Fielding and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to focus on the decade as a unit of literary history? Emerging from the shadows of iconic Victorian authors such as Eliot and Tennyson, the 1880s is a decade that has been too readily overlooked in the rush to embrace end-of-century decadence and aestheticism. The 1880s witnessed new developments in transatlantic networks, experiments in lyric poetry, the decline of the three-volume novel, and the revaluation of authors, journalists and the reading public. The contributors to this collection explore the case for the 1880s as both a discrete point of literary production, with its own pressures and provocations, and as part of literature's sense of its expanded temporal and geographical reach. The essays address a wide variety of authors, topics and genres, offering incisive readings of the diverse forces at work in the shaping of the literary 1880s.
