Book Handbook of Family Violence

Download or read book Handbook of Family Violence written by Alan S. Bellack and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade there has been heightened clinical and investigative activity in the area of family violence. This, of course, is partly attributable to recent surveys showing a high incidence of family violence in the United States. For example, there are indications that nearly 30% of married women in this country are victims of physical abuse by spouses at some point in their marriage. Further, FBI statistics show that approximately 13% of all homicides are husband-wife killings. Moreover, it has been projected that such figures are likely to increase over the next several years. Consistent with these trends, funding of family violence research by both federal and private agencies has increased. Indeed, federal agencies, such as the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, have provided considerable support for work in this area. In addition, family violence, particu larly wifebattering, child abuse, and sexual abuse of children has been the focus of media attention at the national level, and has generated intensive interest in both lay and profes sional publications. Moreover, there have been several recent governmental hearings and investigations regarding the prevalence of these problems.

Book Violence against Women in Families and Relationships

Download or read book Violence against Women in Families and Relationships written by Eve S. Buzawa and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-06-08 with total page 1001 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of domestic violence against women and children in America covers the services meant to combat it, the legal approaches to prosecuting it, the public's attitudes toward it, and the successes and failures of systems meant to address it. The fight to end domestic violence consists of community-based services for battered women, laws and policies to combat the problem, a broad spectrum of frequently-innovative programs to protect or otherwise support abused women and children, a dramatic shift in media portrayals of violence against women, and a growing public critique of unacceptable forms of power and control in relationships. These volumes offer another weapon in that battle. Violence against Women in Families and Relationships takes stock of all of the ways in which legislation, programs and services, and even public attitudes have impacted victims, offenders, and communities over the last few decades. Contributors pay special attention to how race, class, and cultural differences affect the experience of abuse. They explore the efficacy of interventions, and they provide compelling real-life examples to illustrate issues and challenges. Our society has made an enormous investment in stopping abuse in families and relationships, but numerous questions still remain. Many of those questions are answered in these pages, as experts uncover the realities of domestic violence and the toll it takes on families, individuals, communities, and society at large.

Book Innovations in Clinical Practice

Download or read book Innovations in Clinical Practice written by Peter A. Keller and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract This volume of Innovations in clinical practice: A 21st century sourcebook is organized into five sections that reflect the diversity of contributions to the series. The first section, Clinical Issues and Applications, deals primarily with therapeutic concerns. The various contributions, however, go beyond traditional therapeutic issues and also address important questions of assessment, as well as treatment. Issues that relate to a number of different types of clients and situations are covered. The second section addresses Practice Management and Professional Development. This section is included because of the increasing number of clinicians who work independently and require a source of information on practice management, ethical concerns, and professional development issues. We remain in a period of dramatic changes that affect the nature of our practices. New risks as well as opportunities are constantly emerging in this era of health care reform. In this section, we try to address relevant issues that we believe will be of interest to our readers. Some of our discussions here also should be of interest to students and clinicians who practice in organizations or agencies. The third section includes Assessment Instruments and Client Handouts. The assessment instruments are primarily informal and designed to assist clinicians in collecting information about clients. Our goal is to publish screening instruments and forms that aid in the organization of data rather than the making of formal inferences. There are some exceptions to this rule; however, we believe all fall within the bounds of accepted professional practice in the format in which they are presented. The materials presented here should be useful to psychologists and other professionals, with minimal potential for misuse. We assume that readers will be thoroughly familiar with any disorders or processes that they attempt to evaluate, and readers are advised to carefully review the introductory materials that accompany contributions to this section. We also have included in this section two handouts for use with your clients. The fourth section on Community Interventions reflects our view that mental health practitioners have much to offer in the community beyond traditional clinical services. We trust that the material in this section will be of assistance to those who are interested in mental health consultation, education, prevention, and expanding their services to reach new and broader populations. The fifth section, Selected Topics, includes a variety of contributions that do not fit neatly into one of the other sections. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved).

Download or read book Family Violence and Men of Color written by Ricardo Carrillo, PhD, PhD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-08-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This innovative book examines an important, timely topicÖThe content will greatly enhance practitioners' and students' understanding and skills in working with men of color." - Elaine P. Congress, DSW, Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service "Family Violence and Men of Color is the best book in cross-cultural issues and domestic violence that I have ever read. It is a good combination of literature review, clinical interventions and cultural imagery." -Daniel Sonkin, PhD, Marriage, Family and Child Counselor Family violence is an international epidemic that knows no cultural boundaries, but for years research has overlooked the historical, political and cultural factors that often lead men toward violent behavior. The first edition of Family Violence and Men of Color broke new ground by closely examining the relationship between race and family violence. This revised edition offers an even broader, cross-cultural analysis of male violence and more specialized treatment methods and approaches. Key Features: Chapters analyzing violent behavioral patterns in each major community of color Three new chapters on the African-American and Maori ommunities, in addition to the Latino, Native American, Asian, and South American communities Culturally-based strategies and models that enhance the efficacy of existing intervention programs for men who batter Integrates clinical, experiential, and narrative approaches to family violence This text calls for a critical evaluation and transformation of cultural practices that promote violence against women, and will be pivotal in the development of more effective prevention and intervention programs in the years to come.

Book Family Interventions in Domestic Violence

Download or read book Family Interventions in Domestic Violence written by John Hamel, LCSW and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2006-09-26 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exciting new book John Hamel, author of the ground-breaking Gender-Inclusive Treatment of Intimate Partner Abuse, and Tonia Nicholls go beyond the traditional intervention theories of domestic violence practiced today. Here are just some of the key principles covered: Interventions Should Be Based on a Thorough Unbiased Assessment Victim/Perpetrator Distinctions are Overstated, and Much Partner Abuse is Mutual Regardless of Perpetrator Gender, Child Witnesses to Partner Abuse are Adversely Affected, and are at Risk for Perpetrating Partner Abuse as Adults This new gender-inclusive approach to assessment and intervention provides a significant departure from traditional paradigms of domestic violence, and offers a much-needed awareness to effectively prevent violence in our communities today and for future generations.
