He'd throw up. Get God-awful headaches. But the more he tried to avoid trouble the more it happened and the more men were after him. Men that didn't want to kiss and make up. If he couldn't think of something, he'd end up in the nuthouse or the graveyard.

One cowboy emptied his gun at another cowboy without even comin close. His opponent killed him with his second shot. I made up my mind to practice with my new six-gun on the way back to Texas and bought a pile of ammo for that purpose. The Boss didn't rush back to Waco, but neither did he lollygag either. He sold most of the horses, along with the cattle, keeping only the best to use for the next trip and an old lead steer we called Brindle. Brindle had made every trip to Abilene with The Boss and knew the way better than we did. We would stop evenings early enough for the horses to get filled up on grass. I took advantage of the evenings by practicing drawing and firing my pistol at least an hour. During the day, I carried the gun in my hand, aiming and dry firing at cactus or other objects. I took a lot of ribbin from the crew, but the speed and accuracy that I attained gained their respect.

Book Shooting Scripts

Download or read book Shooting Scripts written by Bob Herzberg and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-03-24 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their heyday, pulp westerns were one of America's most popular forms of entertainment. Often selling for less than 50 cents, the paperback books introduced generations to the "exploits" of Billy the Kid and Jesse James, brought to life numerous villains (usually named "Black" something, e.g., Black Bart and Black Pete), and created a West that existed only in the minds of several talented writers. It was only natural that filmmakers would look to the pulps for stories, adapting many of the works for the big screen and shaping the Western film genre. The adaptations of seven of the pulps' best writers--Ernest Haycox, Luke Short, Frank Gruber, Norman A. Fox, Louis L'Amour, Marvin H. Albert, and Clair Huffaker--are analyzed here. Insightful and humorous, the work looks at how the pulp novels and the movie adaptations reflected the times in which they were produced. It examines the cliches that became a part of the story: the rescue of the heroine, the gunfights, the evil banker or rancher ready to steal the land of the good, law-abiding citizens, and the harlot with a heart of gold. A critical examination of how the books were interpreted--or frequently misinterpreted--by filmmakers is included, along with commentary on the actors and directors who put the pulps on screen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeb Ralston was a gunfighter much to be feared who possessed an uncanny knack for yanking his guns out of their holsters and, in the same lightning motion, fire with uncanny, deadly, accuracy. However, Jeb never sought a fight and had never killed an adversary, although many an adversary had bounced off the ground incapacitated by Jeb's gunshot wounds right through a hip, shoulder or seared scalp, and ear. One day, as is sure to happen when one had a reputation of being good with guns, a character came to town seeking out Jeb Ralston to prove he was better than Ralston. The only problem was, the character came to town along with a wife and children intending to have them inhibit and distract Ralston. He wanted to make a name for himself, kill Ralston, and settle in that same community to ply upon his newly-won reputation to become rich and famous. He called Ralston out right in the middle of the town square! But this time, Ralston shot him dead. The man's wife ran screaming across the ground right at Jeb and began beating him on his chest with both fists. Her fury was unlike any fury Jeb had ever experienced. As he tried to protect himself from her relentless attacks, Jeb could see her children just a bit off to her right. At that moment, something changed in Jeb. It was as if all his strength had left him. As the woman, exhausted by her fury, stumbled to the ground, her children ran to her, tears streaming down their dirty faces, looking up at Jeb who turned forced his legs to walk, the woman's screams hammering the sides of his head worse as a throbbing headache. One who had witnessed the encounter followed after Jeb and asked, "Jeb, where you going?" "To hell for what I've done," answered Jeb without turning his head, fetched his few belongings from the room he'd rented, mounted his horse Blackie, and left. Jeb Relston, reluctant gunfighter, was just that: reluctant, tired of life, bereft of hope, depressed. In this story, Jeb slowly experiences many people and events which, bit by bit, begin to bring healing to his soul. He would meet a red-haired woman, become a surrogate father to an eleven-year-old orphan boy, be forced to battle one of the worst villains ever to live-Jack Pardee-and lose. A second encounter with Pardee would result in a return of Ralston's self-confidence. The story will have a happy ending with a changed Jeb Ralston set to experience a new life with perhaps even a wife and son or even a job as the town's sheriff. God works in mysterious ways as will be revealed in Jeb Ralston's life without him even knowing it. As little by little, people and events heal and renew the Jeb Ralston of old even without the use of his guns.

Book excerpt: Monsters: The 1985 Chicago Bears and the Wild Heart of Football is the New York Times bestselling gripping account of a once-in-a-lifetime team and their lone Super Bowl season. For Rich Cohen and millions of other fans, the 1985 Chicago Bears were more than a football team: they were the greatest football team ever—a gang of colorful nuts, dancing and pounding their way to victory. They won a Super Bowl and saved a city. It was not just that the Monsters of the Midway won, but how they did it. On offense, there was high-stepping running back Walter Payton and Punky QB Jim McMahon, who had a knack for pissing off Coach Mike Ditka as he made his way to the end zone. On defense, there was the 46: a revolutionary, quarterback-concussing scheme cooked up by Buddy Ryan and ruthlessly implemented by Hall of Famers such as Dan "Danimal" Hampton and "Samurai" Mike Singletary. On the sidelines, in the locker rooms, and in bars, there was the never-ending soap opera: the coach and the quarterback bickering on TV, Ditka and Ryan nearly coming to blows in the Orange Bowl, the players recording the "Super Bowl Shuffle" video the morning after the season's only loss. Cohen tracked down the coaches and players from this iconic team and asked them everything he has always wanted to know: What's it like to win? What's it like to lose? Do you really hate the guys on the other side? Were you ever scared? What do you think as you lie broken on the field? How do you go on after you have lived your dream but life has not ended? The result is Monsters: The 1985 Chicago Bears and the Wild Heart of Football, a portrait not merely of a team but of a city and a game: its history, its future, its fallen men, its immortal heroes. But mostly it's about being a fan—about loving too much. This is a book about America at its most nonsensical, delirious, and joyful.

Book Wild Bill Hickok Gunfighter

Download or read book Wild Bill Hickok Gunfighter written by Joseph G. Rosa and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “James Butler Hickok, generally called ‘Wild Bill,’ epitomized the archetypal gunfighter, that half-man, half-myth that became the heir to the mystique of the duelist when that method of resolving differences waned. . . . Easy access to a gun and whiskey coupled with gambling was the cause of most gunfights--few of which bore any resemblance to the gentlemanly duel of earlier times. . . . Hickok’s gunfights were unusual in that most of them were ‘fair’ fights, not just killings resulting from rage, jealousy over a woman, or drunkenness. And, the majority of his encounters were in his role as lawman or as an individual upholding the law.”--from Wild Bill Hickok, Gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok (1837–1876) was a Civil War spy and scout, Indian fighter, gambler, and peace officer. He was also one of the greatest gunfighters in the West. His peers referred to his reflexes as “phenomenal” and to his skill with a pistol as “miraculous.” In Wild Bill Hickok, Gunfighter, Joseph G. Rosa, the world’s foremost authority on Hickok, provides an informative examination of Hickok’s many gunfights. Rosa describes the types of guns used by Hickok and illustrates his use of the plains’ style of “quick draw,” as well as examining other elements of the Hickok legend. He even reconsiders the infamous “dead man’s hand” allegedly held by Hickok when he was shot to death at age thirty-nine while playing poker. Numerous photographs and drawings accompany Rosa’s down-to-earth text.
