Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Practices of the Diegueno Indians In culture, the Diegueno show a marked similarity to their neighbors, the Luiseno on the north, and the Cahuilla on the northeast. In basket-making these people use almost exclusively the coiled weave. The basket designs of the Diegueno are rather simpler than those of the Luiseno and Cahuilla, and run largely to the horizontal band type. Like their neighbors they manu facture fairly good pottery of a brittle, porous variety. In place of the large conical burden-basket usual in California, the Die gueno use a large burden-net with a packstrap to go across the forehead. Twines made of milkweed, mescal or maguey, and nettle fibres, are employed by them in the manufacture of a large variety of textile objects, such as bags, ceremonial dresses, and the carrying nets just mentioned. From maguey fibre they make excellent sandals, of a type not found in California outside of this southern region. The Diegueno, as well as the Luiseno and Cahuilla, build houses of tule or California bulrush, which are fairly weather-proof and permanent. Although big game is nat urally scarce in their habitat, they make a powerful bowof wil low, its length and size compensating for the lack of sinew rein forcement. Altogether, in the matter of material culture, the Diegueno seem fully equal to the other people of the State. Alone, among all the tribes of the State, they together with their neighbors the Luiseiio, Cahuilla, and Mohave, have achieved the manufacture of pottery and the use of cloth-like textiles. The region which they inhabit coincides approximately with the boundaries of San Diego county.In culture, the Diegueño show a marked similarity to their neighbors, the Luiseño on the north, and the Cahuilla on the northeast.Most of the rites which the Diegueño have in common with the Luiseño belong to a definite cultus. This cultus is what has been described among the Luiseño as the "Chungichnish worship." Among the Diegueño it is known as awik or Western system. As described elsewhere in the present paper, and in another paper of this series by a different author, this cultus centers around an initiatory rite, which consists in drinking ceremonially a decoction of toloache or jimsonweed, Datura meteloides.In studying the religious practices of the Diegueño a distinction is therefore always to be kept in mind between the rites which belong on the one hand to the cultus and on the other to the ordinary ceremonies, since the latter exhibit a totally different animus, and have no definite relation either to the cultus or to each other.

In these dreams beings would come to them while they were not asleep and Showed them what kind of medicine to have. Others, having lost a Sister or brother or some other close relative, would chop off a finger and go to the mountains to have dreams. All this comes from old-woman's-grandson. In their dreams they would see a bird or some other animal transformed into a man who had painted his face and tied certain feathers to his head and would tell the visionary to imitate him. Those who herded horses would stay out at night with their herd and sometimes had dreams of horses. Then they went out to the enemy and brought back so many head of horses. In their vision they would see a horse turn into a man, who would talk to the dreamer. First the visionary would see a man who showed him some medicine, then the visitant would turn into an animal. Those who dreamt of a bear were not shot in battles, or even if they were shot, the arrows or bullets would fall to the ground. Badger dreams are the same. I know of two men who dreamt of a badger. One of them would not eat the young of any animal. I saw the other deliberately shoot himself in the breast, but the bullet fell on the ground and he was not killed. Sometimes people dreamt of stones or rocks; these would be like the bear and badger dreamers. Some times the bear was thought to be a real bear, sometimes he would come out of the clouds. These were larger than real bears, I don't know what they were. Old woman's-grandson told all the animals to help the people of the earth, and that is why they appeared in these dreams. The animals gave power to these Indians. Scratches-face's views on old-woman's-grandson were shared by some other informants, but not by all (see p. It will be noted that he assigns a specific character to visions of bears, badgers, and rocks, to wit, that of bestowing immunity to missiles.
