Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The City is the best, funniest, saddest, and most thought-provoking compilation ever assembled on the urban scene. James A. Clapp has arranged more than three thousand quotations--epigrams, epithets, verses, proverbs, scriptural references, witticisms, lyrics, literary references, and historical observations--on urban life from antiquity until the present. These quotes are drawn from the written and spoken words of more than one thousand writers throughout history. This volume, with contributions from speakers, poets, song writers, politicians philosophers, scientists, religious leaders, historians, social scientists, humorists, architects, journalists, and travelers from and to many lands is designed to be used by writers, speechmakers, students, and scholars on cities and urban life. Clapp's text is striking for its sharp contrasts of urban and rural life and the urbanization process in different historical times and geographical areas. This second edition includes four hundred new entries, updated birth dates and occupations of quoted authors, and an expanded and updated introduction and preface. Clapp also added new introduction pages for each section containing pictures and unique quotations. The indexes have also been expanded to include more subjects and cities. The scope of this book is international, including entries on most major and many minor cities of the world. It is noteworthy for its pleasures and as well as its insights.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Faith in America: Recollections of a Missionary I willingly accept the dedication of a study, the subject and object of which are equally clear to us both. People, like individuals, have each a vocation to follow and a mission to fulfil. The mission of the Irish people, a noble and holy mission among all others, is that of propagating and maintaining the Catholic faith. You show by incontestable facts this voca tion of the Irish people, and the manner in which they fulfil their mission in the United States, a country which particularly interests us; but history tells that in every missionary country, as in the United States, the Irish with invincible energy and untiring persever ance, have proved themselves the firm sup porters and propagators of the Catholic faith. You justly recall how dear to me is that por tion of my flock which belongs to the Irish nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Minds of the West

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jon Gjerde
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2000-11-09
  • ISBN : 0807861677

Download or read book The Minds of the West written by Jon Gjerde and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the century preceding World War I, the American Middle West drew thousands of migrants both from Europe and from the northeastern United States. In the American mind, the region represented a place where social differences could be muted and a distinctly American culture created. Many of the European groups, however, viewed the Midwest as an area of opportunity because it allowed them to retain cultural and religious traditions from their homelands. Jon Gjerde examines the cultural patterns, or "minds," that those settling the Middle West carried with them. He argues that such cultural transplantation could occur because patterns of migration tended to reunite people of similar pasts and because the rural Midwest was a vast region where cultural groups could sequester themselves in tight-knit settlements built around familial and community institutions. Gjerde compares patterns of development and acculturation across immigrant groups, exploring the frictions and fissures experienced within and between communities. Finally, he examines the means by which individual ethnic groups built themselves a representative voice, joining the political and social debate on both a regional and national level.

Book Representing Irish Religious Histories

Download or read book Representing Irish Religious Histories written by Jacqueline Hill and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection begins on the premise that, until recently, religion has been particularly influential in Ireland in forming a sense of identity, and in creating certain versions of reality. History has also been a key component in that process, and the historical evolution of Christianity has been appropriated by the main religious denominations – Catholic, Church of Ireland, and Presbyterian – with a view to reinforcing their own identities. This book explores the ways in which this occurred; the writing of religious history, and some of the manifestations of that process, forms key parts of the collection. Also included are chapters discussing current and recent attempts to examine the legacy of collective religious memory - notably in Northern Ireland - based on projects designed to encourage reflection about the religious past among both adults and school-children. Readers will find this collection particularly timely in view of the current ‘decade of commemorations’.
