Book Minorities and Girls in School

Download or read book Minorities and Girls in School written by David Johnson and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 1997-07-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although this country has a stake in educating its citizens well, for much of our history, we have not known in any scientific way what helps and what hinders the academic success of girls and minority group members. This book gives voice to four psychologists (Schofield, Slaughter-Defoe, Eccles, and Betz) who use scientific inquiry to understand what helps and what hinders the academic and life performance of minority students and girls. These are scientists who approach their subject matter with technical skill and personal passion to ask such questions as: What has desegregation accomplished? Can beneficial parent-child interactions be facilitated so as to improve school-related performance? Why are we seeing such low levels of achievement for girls and minorities in math and science? What stops women and minorities from choosing and completing majors in science and engineering? Each chapter represents an effort to communicate a vital area of scientific investigation to those in political life who could use that knowledge to formulate effective public policy. Near the end of each chapter are the questions that each of the authors was asked following the original briefing. These interchanges will show how policy makers begin to think about the use of scientific information in a political context.

Book Social and Emotional Adjustment and Family Relations in Ethnic Minority Families

Download or read book Social and Emotional Adjustment and Family Relations in Ethnic Minority Families written by Ronald D. Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses issues related to the intersection of family relationships and several contexts for the social and emotional development of ethnic minority adolescents. The papers are organized in sections under subtitles which reflect three contextual frames through which these issues may be examined. The first section focuses on the relationship between economic factors and resources on the one hand and family relations as environments for development on the other. The next part focuses on family and peer networks and relations as contexts for the emotional and social development of adolescents. The last section takes neighborhood and school as contexts for and determinants of social and emotional adjustment in adolescence. Like much of the extant work and current thought concerning development in ethnic minority children and adolescents, the authors have highlighted the more stressful and negative aspects of these several contexts. There are a few explicit and several implicit references made to supportive and more positive contexts and manifestations of relationships which frame the developmental experiences of ethnic minority adolescents. These serve as a reminder that many ethnic minority adolescents do overcome the odds against success and grow into healthy and wholesome adults. However, in large measure, this book is a contribution to our understanding of the problematic circumstances under which a significant segment of the population exists, reminding us that life for ethnic minority adolescents is difficult. The fact that some of these young people manage to overcome the negative and stressful aspects of their experiences and defy the implicit prediction of failure to thrive is truly remarkable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second book in the series examining student achievement. The chapters in this book reflect the scholarly papers presented at the July 2006 Education Policy, Leadership Summer Institute (EPLSI) by K–16 educators, researchers, community advocates, and policymakers who work in urban communities. The Institute serves as a place where individuals interested in scholarly discussions and research directly related to: (1) how data can be utilized to inform policy; (2) examining the urban school context from the perspectives of the polity, school leaders; students; and other related internal and external actors; and (3) identifying strategies for improving student academic achievement can gather. During this week-long Institute, participants examined the structural problems and policy tensions affecting urban communities and student achievement. The Institute’s theme, Meeting the Challenges of Urban Schools is reflected throughout this book. Specifically, this edition explores the interrelated aspects of policy, practice and research and how they affect academic achievement. The five sections in this book examine different challenges facing urban schools and their impact on student performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School Is a Joke: Ethnography of Inner City Public School Students’ Perception and Sensemaking of School and Schooling explored minority and low-SES inner-city high school students’ perception and sense-making of school, schooling, learning, academic behaviors, and academic achievement through an integrated theory of human development, learning, and achievement. The author sought an understanding of the reason behind the persistent academic failure of inner-city minority and low-SES high school students, as well as the academic achievement gap within and between this subgroup of students. Conducted in a high-poverty, high-minority comprehensive inner-city high school in the south of the United States of America, the aim of the study was threefold. First, the author explored the factors operating in high school students’ thoughts, feelings, actions, and reactions to school and academic achievement. Second, she examined the mechanisms by which these factors operate. Third, she utilized an integrated humanistic paradigm in analyzing student learning and academic behavior, the interaction between student characteristics and school processes, and the school culture that emerged from the interaction. The integrated framework for the study comprised of Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model of human development, Bandura’s sociocoginity theory of learning, and Bourdieu’s concept of habitus. The study’s findings have implication for student learning, academic behavior, and academic achievement; school organization and functioning, as well as administrative behavior and school culture.

Book Exploring Risk and Protective Dimensions of Ethnic Minority Students Relationships and Disruptive Behavior at School

Download or read book Exploring Risk and Protective Dimensions of Ethnic Minority Students Relationships and Disruptive Behavior at School written by Megan Alyssa Brown and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A considerable number of youth engage in behaviors that place them at risk for negative psychosocial health and behavior outcomes; therefore there is an urgency to understand and address students' social and emotional development as it relates to antisocial behavior. From an ecological perspective, schools are recognized as unique systems in which students have the opportunity to develop relationships with teachers and peers that have the potential to play a pivotal role in later behavioral adjustment. Instead of categorizing relationships as all positive or negative, this study aims to investigate the risk and protective mechanisms of distinct relationship dimensions and their unique and collective association with negative behaviors at school.

Book The Association of Teachers Perceptions with Second Graders Behavior and Academic Achievement

Download or read book The Association of Teachers Perceptions with Second Graders Behavior and Academic Achievement written by Novell Espoiry Tani and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study was designed to address the following questions (a) to what extent do teachers' judgments of students' academic competence and problematic behavior agree with direct assessments of reading and self-regulation? (b) to what extent are teachers' judgments affected by students' race and gender? And, if they are affected by students' race and/or gender, are these race and gender differences reflected in the direct assessments and (c) to what extent do teachers' judgment of their students' academic competence and problematic behavior predict spring reading and self-regulation outcomes, controlling for fall scores. The study examined second graders' (n=570 students, 40 classrooms, 8 schools) self-regulation skills using the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders Task (HTKS). The Woodcock Johnson Achievement - Passage Comprehension subtest was utilized as a measure of reading ability. Of the sample, 39% of the children were African American (Black), 48% were White. 47% were boys. Teachers' ratings of students' academic competence generally agreed with direct assessment of reading however agreement was greater for academic competence than for problematic behavior. This is likely because teachers had access to the students' reading assessments. At the same time, teachers' judgments appeared to be influenced by students' gender and race; they generally rated African American boys to be less academically competent than White boys, and less competent than girls regardless of race. Teachers' judgments predicted spring outcomes even when controlling for fall scores.
