Book excerpt: "The Red Lady" by Katharine Newlin Burt is a supernatural thriller full of mysterious events and unexpected death. The story is written in a gothic first-person style. The narrative revolves around Janice Gale, a new housekeeper assigned to a country place near Pine Cone. The house was accused of being haunted by several ghosts. The majority of the house staff resigned after seeing ghosts many times. Janice decides to investigate this ghost thing and experience several strange happenings all over the manor house. Soon she concludes that the ghost is in search of some lost Russian jewels. Now the matters are more complicated as Janice falls into a trap set by one of the houseguests, who makes her believe she has a split personality disorder. But that's not true because the ghost looks just like Janice.... Excerpt: "I was the housekeeper at the time for little Mrs. Brane. How I had come to be her housekeeper might have served to forewarn me, if I had had the clue. None but an inexperienced, desperate girl would have taken the position after the fashion in which I was urged to take it. I remember the raw, colorless day, and how it made me shiver to face its bitter grayness as I came out of the dismal New York boardinghouse to begin my dreary, mortifying search for work. I remember the hollowness of purse and stomach; and the dullness of head. I even remember wondering that hair like mine, so conspiculously golden-red, could possibly keep its flame under such conditions. And halfway down the block, how very well I remember the decent-looking, black-clad woman who touched my arm, looked me hard in the face, and said, "A message for you, madam."

Book excerpt: One of Refinery29's and POPSUGAR's Favorite New Books A scary story becomes far too real in this “unsettling” supernatural thriller in the vein of A Head Full of Ghosts that “will keep you guessing to the very last page” (Alma Katsu, author of The Hunger) Red Lady, Red Lady, show us your face... In 1991, Heather Cole and her friends were members of the Dead Girls Club. Obsessed with the macabre, the girls exchanged stories about serial killers and imaginary monsters, like the Red Lady, the spirit of a vengeful witch killed centuries before. Heather knew the stories were just that, until her best friend Becca began insisting the Red Lady was real—and she could prove it. That belief got Becca killed. It’s been nearly thirty years, but Heather has never told anyone what really happened that night—that Becca was right and the Red Lady was real. She’s done her best to put that fateful summer, Becca, and the Red Lady, behind her. Until a familiar necklace arrives in the mail, a necklace Heather hasn’t seen since the night Becca died. The night Heather killed her. Now, someone else knows what she did . . . and they’re determined to make Heather pay.

Book excerpt: The Red Lady is a homage to the classic stories in the form of a novel, where Étienne, a talented French artist accustomed to the good life at court, is compelled to leave behind all these comforts after falling out of favour due to an affair and travel through the woods in France seeking a living through his songs. One dark night, he crosses paths with a mysterious woman bearing a red hood and a black sword, with which she saves him from a beast arisen from children’s stories. By her side, he will begin a strange quest of which he knows very little and in which he will discover that fairy tales have a spine-chillingly real backstory. ---- I’ve been chased by wolves on moonless nights. I’ve walked through crypts inhabited by the walking dead. I’ve faced terrors that would make the bravest turn pale. I’ve ridden with the ghostly hunt, brandishing cold iron. I’ve wielded a howling sword that wanted to devour my soul. I’ve seen things that shouldn’t even exist die. I’ve done it all in pursuit of a goal that I didn’t understand. But this is not my story. It’s hers.

Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire: Book Six, The Winds of Winter Dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the #1 New York Times bestselling author delivers the fifth book in his landmark series—as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire. A DANCE WITH DRAGONS In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance—beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has thousands of enemies, and many have set out to find her. As they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind. Fleeing from Westeros with a price on his head, Tyrion Lannister, too, is making his way to Daenerys. But his newest allies in this quest are not the rag-tag band they seem, and at their heart lies one who could undo Daenerys’s claim to Westeros forever. Meanwhile, to the north lies the mammoth Wall of ice and stone—a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, will face his greatest challenge. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice. From all corners, bitter conflicts reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all.
