Download or read book British Invasion and Spy Literature 1871 1918 written by Danny Laurie-Fletcher and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines British invasion and spy literature and the political, social, and cultural attitudes that it expresses. This form of literature began to appear towards the end of the nineteenth century and developed into a clearly recognised form during the Edwardian period (1901-1914). By looking at the origins and evolution of invasion literature, and to a lesser extent detective literature, up to the end of World War I, Danny Laurie-Fletcher utilises fiction as a window into the mind-set of British society. There is a focus on the political arguments embedded within the texts, which mirrored debates in wider British society that took place before and during World War I – debates about military conscription, immigration, spy scares, the fear of British imperial decline, and the rise of Germany. These debates and topics are examined to show what influence they had on the creation of the intelligence services, MI5 and MI6, and how foreigners were perceived in society.
Download or read book The British in Interwar Germany written by David G. Williamson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British in Interwar Germany analyses the British presence in Germany from the armistice until the end of the Rhineland occupation in 1930. It looks at British involvement in the Rhineland, Danzig, Upper Silesia, Schleswig and East Prussia and on the inter-Allied Control Commissions (IAMCC), which were supervising German disarmament. Drawing widely on a range of primary sources, David Williamson explores the problems facing British military and civil officials, their attitudes towards the Germans and their relations with their allies - particularly the French. The book also examines the everyday lives of the British soldiers and administrators in Germany and their interaction with the Germans, with particular attention being paid to the city of Cologne and the British colony that developed there. This new edition brings David Williamson's study fully up-to-date and now contains a greater coverage of the relevant social history, as well as maps, illustrations and a useful glossary. The British in Interwar Germany will be of great interest to students and scholars of Weimar Germany and Britain and Europe during the interwar years.

Download or read book Application of Quantitative Techniques for the Prediction of Bank Acquisition Targets written by Fotios Pasiouras and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the banking industry has faced significant challenges due to deregulation, globalization, financial innovation, and intensified global competition. In response to these challenges, banks have adopted strategies to grow and expand their activities, with mergers and acquisitions (M & As) being one of the most popular over the last decade. This unique book thus discusses the use of quantitative classification methods for the prediction of bank acquisitions. With an overview of the M & A trends in the EU banking industry and a survey of the motives for M & As, the authors compare various statistical and computational methodologies used to analyze and predict bank acquisitions. The material constitutes a useful basis for researchers and practitioners in banking management to develop and analyze investment decisions related to M & As.
