Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training in the Public Schools of Philadelphia It is well, also, that we should be on our guard against a kind of pseudo manual training that is finding its way into the schools. As is always the case with new move ments, there is a good deal of experimenting with little knacks, which do nothing for either discipline or knowl edge. These are put forward by well-meaning persons as manual training, and great harm is done in this way in misleading the public and wasting the time and energies ofpupfls. Book History of the Central High School of Philadelphia Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Central High School of Philadelphia Classic Reprint written by Franklin Spencer Edmonds and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Central High School of Philadelphia No one can study the growth of a great public school, with its struggles, - first for existence and later for independence and support, - without appreciating how closely it has entered into the life of the people. This history is the outgrowth of a sincere desire to record formally the work and the traditions of one of the strong educational influences in the development of Philadelphia. It is offered as a tribute to the long line of honorable and upright men who, under the stimulating leadership of Bache, Hart, Maguire, and Riche, were content to lead the quiet life of the public school teacher. The results of their work are to be found in the careers of their pupils. While in these days no argument for public education is necessary, it is hoped that this account of the work of one school may encourage those who in other places are advocating higher education for all, under the auspices of the state. I have to acknowledge courteous and ready assistance from many Alumni and others who were interested in the work. As the sources of information were largely personal memories and recollections, it has been deemed wise to give a complete list of those who have helped in the preparation of the work, and whose co-operation is gratefully acknowledged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presented to the Schools of Philadelphia But this has not been done without a feeling of sadness for the passing of the genus Ingrain, so long the glory and a source of prosperity of the Quaker City. Its death-knell was sounded by the increase in popularity of the other grades, because of their greater beauty, durability and improved mechanical production, coupled with the advance in designing and coloring and the advent of rugs as distinguished from carpets. From its height of popularity about 1895 there was a steady de crease, and many hundred looms have gone to the junk pile or been changed to make light summer wear rugs, so that at pres ent very few Ingrains are made. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Course of Study in Civics: Grades One to Six for the Public Schools of Philadelphia There are three conditions necessary to the development of right moral conduct. The child must know what is right; he must desire to do it; but, most important of all, he must be trained, through constant practice, in the formation of good habits. The knowledge of the right and the emotional basis for future action may be given by means of story, poem, song, memory gem, games, dramatization and other class or group exercises. In such instruction, care should be taken to avoid pointing the moral, as to do so is likely to spoil the emotional reaction desired. While this instruction will constitute a very small part of the day's work, the doing side or practical appli cation will be constant. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Survey of the Public Schools of Philadelphia, Vol. 3: Types of Schools, Teachers, Vocational Education Provision should be made in the curriculum for the introduction of additional play and work exercises adapted not only to age but to individual needs. The conditions, materials, and activities most favor able to the growth of the children at this stage should be the guiding factors in curriculum making. Each daily session is divided into short periods of from fifteen to thirty minutes duration. Very often there are two thirty-minute work periods in a half-day program. In a few programs there are work periods of fifty minutes, but in general there are no long ones. A longer work hour is needed for constructive work or representative play when initiated and self-directed by the children. Methods of Instruction. The most common procedure is to conduct the various activities such as games, rhythms, story telling, oral language exercises in one large group under the direct control of the teacher. For block building and construction work the children are divided into three groups, each division working at a different occupation. The work in these groups is graded according to the progress of the pupils and is directed by the teacher. For little children they are orderly and responsive. Sometimes the children are allowed to make their own plans and carry them out in small groups of their own choice. Here most of the teachers need expert guidance in encouraging self-initiated problems. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
