Book The Process of Becoming a Blue Ribbon School

Download or read book The Process of Becoming a Blue Ribbon School written by Dana Russina Harris and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze the shared experiences of teachers and principals within selected schools in their quest of achieving the United States Department of Eductaion Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award in Georgia. In one sense, these schools are already successful. They were required to document five consecutive years of high and improving test scores as a prerequisite for consideration. Therefore, an attempt to better understand a process that could lead to continuous improvement and change in schools, as deemed necessary, was the fulcrum upon which this study rests. The researcher applied a theoretical framework to help explicate narratives drawn from participants. Principals were interviewed and collaborative school teams participated in focus groups. Research protocol questions guided the interviews to elicit responses relating to the seven research sub-questions to derive rich narratives. The qualitative data from the taped interviews were analyzed using the QSR NUD. IST 5 software program, which aided the researcher in categorizing the interviewees' responses to the interview questions and, more importantly, identifying recurring themes, related ideas and responses pertinent to the purpose of the study. Narratives resulting from these procedures became the primary sources of data within this design. Several conclusions emerged from this study. In all cases, the Blue Ribbon School process reduced isolation and strengthened teamwork, collegiality and school pride within the group of interviewees. These attributes were closely akin to discussions of school climate and were reinforced through the retelling of stories. The process encouraged an integrated, holistic view of the school, particularly for team members who actively participated in preparing the application. Principals and school teams believed that by working together in a goal-oriented process such as the one found in the Blue Ribbon School program, they were able to glean a broader, more meaningful view of their school and agreed that a student focus was the driving force for the school's aims and actions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Character Education in America's Blue Ribbon Schools is based upon descriptive, documentary, and qualitative research conducted on the award winning school applications in the United Stated Department of Education's Elementary School Recognition Program, i.e. the Blue Ribbon Schools. The purpose of the program is to focus national attention on schools that are doing an exceptional job with all of their students. Areas studied are developing a solid foundation of basic skills and knowledge of subject matter and fostering the development of character, values, and ethical judgment. The first edition of this book reported on the first decade of this program, from 1985 to 1994. The second edition adds the schools that have won the award from 1996-2001. Included are the Blue Ribbon schools that applied for Special Honors in Character Education and five that actually won that recognition in 1998-1999. This edition finds character education much stronger in American schools in recent years and is full of many promising practices. It is a practical book that will guide school administrators, teachers, parents, board members, and concerned citizens interested in starting or strengthening the character education focus of their school.

Book Recipe for a Blue Ribbon School

Download or read book Recipe for a Blue Ribbon School written by Brent Walker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-02 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you keep doing what you have always done, you will continue to get what you have always gotten. Westside Elementary in Powell, Wyoming, went from mediocre scores on the Wyoming State Test to being one of the top academic schools in the state. In Recipe for a Blue Ribbon School, author and school principal Brent Walker details different interventions that resulted in Westside being recognized as a No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School. Real change requires you to start using what you already have differently. In most cases the changes were not new but a different way of doing things. The staff started using assessment data to drive the schedules, programs, use of time, collaboration, and use of technology to truly focus on each child becoming proficient in reading, math, and writing. In addition, different amounts of learning time were provided for every student. These two paradigm shifts allowed Westside's staff to prove their philosophy: All kids can learn. True change requires trust, courage, and stamina. By working together as a team using a unique collaboration model, the staff of Westside made passive learners into active learners. Discover how you too can help your students achieve academic greatness!

This book was released on 1992 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oversight hearing documented in this report was convened to examine the expenditure of $26,750 to produce and televise an appearance by the President of the United States, George Bush, at Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington, District of Columbia, on October 1, 1991. In his opening address, Chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor William D. Ford argued that the use of Department of Education funds resulted in the potential politicizing of the Department of Education and endangered the working relationship between previous presidential administrations and the Department of Education and the Committee. In addition to the opening statements, the report contains prepared statements, letters, and supplemental materials that were entered into the record by Lamar Alexander, U.S. Secretary of Education; John A. Boehner, Representative from the State of Ohio; and William D. Ford, Representative from the State of Michigan. Also included in the report is the transcript of a detailed question and answer session between Secretary of Education Alexander and several of the Committee members. (DB)
