  • Author : S Ramani
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2019-10-16
  • ISBN : 0429590075
  • Pages : 626 pages

Download or read book Indian Insects written by S Ramani and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects are the most interesting and diverse group of organisms on earth, many of which are useful as pollinators of crops and wild plants while others are useful as natural enemies keeping pestiferous insects in check. It is important to conserve these insects for our survival and for this the diversity of insect species inhabiting the different ecosystems of our country must be known. The cornerstone to studies of any kind of organismal diversity is their taxonomic identity. Even after over two and half centuries of studies, so little is known of the insect wealth of our country. It has contributions from taxonomists who have been studying Indian insects for long, this book offers up to date information on many important groups of Indian insects seeking to fill the lacuna of a long felt need for a comprehensive work on the taxonomy of Indian insects. Salient features: Provides an up-to-date taxonomy of major insect groups of India Presents identification keys with illustrations of several important groups of Indian insects Gives a new insight into why insects are so abundant Addresses fundamental questions in mechanoreception and cross kingdom interactions using insects as model systems Indian Insects: Diversity and Science is a festschrift to Professor C. A. Viraktamath, an insect taxonomist par excellence. It has been designed to cater to the needs of academicians, researchers and students who wish to identify insects collected from local environments and will be an invaluable aid for those working in the areas of systematics, ecology, behaviour, diversity and the conservation of insects.

Download or read book Systematics of the parasitic wasp genus Oxyscelio Kieffer Hymenoptera Platygastridae s l part II the Australian and southwest Pacific fauna written by Roger A. Burks and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue contains the second of a planned set of three publications greatly expanding knowledge of the platygastroid genus Oxyscelio Kieffer. We recognize 80 species in Australia and the southwest Pacific, 67 of which are described here as new species. We divided these species into 9 species groups in order to highlight shared morphological features. A total of 412 specimen photographs are provided to aid in specimen identification. Newly discovered species are described from mainland Australia, Fiji, Lord Howe Island, New Britain, New Caledonia, New Guinea, Tasmania, and Vanuatu.

Book The Art of Naming

  • Author : Michael Ohl
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2018-03-30
  • ISBN : 0262037769
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book The Art of Naming written by Michael Ohl and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Tyrannosaurus rex to Heteropoda davidbowie: scientific naming as a joyful and creative act. Tyrannosaurus rex. Homo sapiens. Heteropoda davidbowie. Behind each act of scientific naming is a story. In this entertaining and illuminating book, Michael Ohl considers scientific naming as a joyful and creative act. There are about 1.8 million discovered and named plant and animal species, and millions more still to be discovered. Naming is the necessary next step after discovery; it is through the naming of species that we perceive and understand nature. Ohl explains the process, with examples, anecdotes, and a wildly varied cast of characters. He describes the rules for scientific naming; the vernacular isn't adequate. These rules—in standard binomial nomenclature, the generic name followed by specific name—go back to Linnaeus; but they are open to idiosyncrasy and individual expression. A lizard is designated Barbaturex morrisoni (in honor of the Doors' Jim Morrison, the Lizard King); a member of the horsefly family Scaptia beyonceae. Ohl, a specialist in “winged things that sting,” confesses that among the many wasp species he has named is Ampulex dementor, after the dementors in the Harry Potter novels. Scientific names have also been deployed by scientists to insult other scientists, to make political statements, and as expressions of romantic love: “I shall name this beetle after my beloved wife.” The Art of Naming takes us on a surprising and fascinating journey, in the footsteps of the discoverers of species and the authors of names, into the nooks and crannies and drawers and cabinets of museums, and through the natural world of named and not-yet-named species.

Book Biological Pathways to Improve Pest Control in Agriculture

Download or read book Biological Pathways to Improve Pest Control in Agriculture written by Manika Gupta and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is especially suitable for agricultural products, its vast plains containing alluvial soil with rich natural contents. The major economy of India is based on agricultural products. The green revolution in India brought high hopes for Indian farmers. Several new scientific information helped crop production to grow by leaps and bounds: the more researches, the more intricacies. Further knowledge of pests makes scientists consider several new solutions. The use of chemicals was immediately adopted to decimate the population of pests and, at first, good results were obtained. But later on, harmful effects of the pesticides became known. It was realized later on that the regular use of chemicals in pesticides is extremely dangerous for human health. Generally, chemical pesticides are used to curb the harmful effects of insects and pests. But the immediate gain of this process has an adverse effect on the environment in the long run. Regular use of chemicals leads to insecticide resistance. Then, biodiversity is distributed by pest resurgence and pesticide residues. So, the immediate gain of one generation creates serious problems for the next generation. To sustain agriculture towards its natural mode some new solutions are to be traced. The solution to reduce pesticides is present in the preference for biological management. Predators and parasitoids may be used as natural enemies. In order to gain control over the thrips pests by less harmful means for the agricultural crops, more research work needs to be done. Certain other methods have to be explored in favour of the environment, biodiversity and other useful flora and fauna. We need to maintain the tritrophic interactions in which eating relationships between several species may be traced for biological control.

Book Systematics of Old World Odontacolus Kieffer s l Hymenoptera Platygastridae s l parasitoids of spider eggs

Download or read book Systematics of Old World Odontacolus Kieffer s l Hymenoptera Platygastridae s l parasitoids of spider eggs written by Alejandro A.Valerio and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wasp family Platygastridae is a large group of tiny, exclusively parasitoid wasps distributed worldwide. The genera Odontacolus and Cyphacolus, belonging to this family, are among the most distinctive wasps because of the peculiar hump-like formation on the rear part of their bodies (shape linked to the ovipositor system. Despite their intriguing body shape, the generic status of these two groups has remained unclear. We currently described a 32 new Odontacolus species, providing extensive morphological phylogenetic analysis of Odontacolus and Cyphacolus, these previously understudied genera. Previously considered to be relatively rare based on material available in collections, recent intensive collecting using Malaise and yellow-pan traps has revealed that some species of Odontacolus are moderately common, leading to the description of 32 species from across Africa, Australia and Asia.
