Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prisoner of Hope Foundation has established The Prisoner of Hope Bible as a gift for incarcerated individuals throughout the entire United States whether they are in Prison, Halfway Houses, or under Probation or Supervised Release. All of the funds raised from the sale of the Bible go to help incarcerated individuals with a legal defense fund. With over two million people currently incarcerated, and another 600,000 people being incarcerated each year, with yet another million or more accused of certain crimes that would make them eligible for even a short prison sentence, the purpose of the Foundation is to create a legal defense fund for poor or otherwise indigent defendants that do not have the resources to go to trial, and end up taking plea agreements for long periods of time for crimes they did not commit or should not be punished so harshly simply because federal defenders are over-worked, under-staffed, under-paid, and do not have the ability to face off against the 11,000 prosecuting criminal attorneys that work for the United States government alone. Even a large institution such as the ACLU only has 300 attorneys nationwide, and they often do not offer help in criminal cases. The price for the Bible is set at $20.20 so that everyone realizes it is time to end mass incarceration in America. To the extent that someone wants to contribute more, we would prefer you simply purchase other Bibles and send them to other inmates or their friends, because everyone appreciates getting a book at mail call. The Books of the Bible, and the specific Chapters and Verses chosen, are meant to give someone hope at a time they need it the most, no matter their religion and even if they don't believe in God.It is important that the Prisoner realize that most of the Apostles were in prison at one time or another, and most of the letters in the Bible that form the New Testament were written by the Apostle Paul while he was in prison. Therefore, it is not important that the Prisoner believes in God as much as it is important that the Prisoner knows that God believes in him or her. With that thought in mind, inmates of all races and religions will appreciate The Prisoner of Hope Bible, but once again, the purpose of the Bible is not to spread the Word of God so much as it is to create a source of funding for people that do not otherwise have the ability to defend themselves against an all-powerful and many times out-of-control government, regardless of the Prisoner's particular race or religion. To that end, we have included several excerpts and letters written by other famous Prisoners of Hope, including Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, and even Thoreau's Essay on "Civil Disobedience," which Thoreau wrote after his own experience in prison and which both Gandhi and Mandela quoted frequently in their own writings. Most people in prison go through their own personal spiritual journey, even if they are agnostic or outright atheists. The Prisoner of Hope Bible is meant to aid in the Prisoner's personal journey to find enlightenment, the meaning of life, faith, or at least some inner peace at the end of the journey. Most of all, the Prisoner of Hope Bible is designed to replace the drudgery and fear of prison life with the promise of love and hope that comes with the advent of the future, and a new life after prison. We would appreciate any and all support that you can give the Prisoner of Hope Foundation.

Book excerpt: A fervant millennial hope has often existed at the heart of Protestant evangelicalism. Varieties of eschatology have exercised a profound impact on the movement's theology and history. Although millennialism had a respected lineage within conservative Protestantism, it flourished with enormous energy in the early nineteenth century as evangelicals responded to the threat of the American and European revolutions and the cultural pessimism of the Romantic movement. By mid-century, the millennialism which had first been articulated for the defence of Protestant conservatism had paved the way for the subversion of historic theology and church practice, as a growing confidence in biblical inerrancy and the 'literal' hermeneutic challenged many of the historical assumptions of the evangelical faith. This volume of essays expands on neglected aspects of the impact of the evangelical millennialism in Britain and Ireland between 1800 and 1880 and includes an essay charting recent trends in the study of millennialism.

Book Prison Ministry

  • Pages : 189 pages

Download or read book Prison Ministry written by Dennis W. Pierce and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Show the incarcerated how to find forgiveness in unforgiving surroundings As the prison population in the United States increases by more than 1,000 inmates each week, prison ministry programs must have a working blueprint for dealing with the shame, humiliation, hate, and loneliness of incarceration at both the adult correctional and juvenile detention/probation levels. Prison Ministry: Hope Behind the Wall demonstrates how a ministry can adapt Latin American Liberation theology to address oppression and bring prisoners into the community of Christ. Author Dennis Pierce, former chaplain at the Joliet Correctional Center in Illinois (where the Fox Network's 2005 “Prison Break” series is filmed), presents a functioning approach to forgiveness and reconciliation, combining pastoral counseling, Christian education, Bible studies, and worship to help inmates develop self-esteem and an overall feeling of self-worth through compassion and empathy. Prison Ministry: Hope Behind the Wall provides an alternative resource on our prison system for chaplains, pastors, priests, and students working in theology, ethics, or counseling. Instead of the usual descriptive narratives of inmates’ lives or discussions of statistical approaches, this unique book combines a theological model with a viable programmatic approach to confront the oppression of incarceration and reverse its effects. The book looks at the vital issues facing juveniles in the criminal justice system (the transition from county jail to a correctional facility, victimization, rejection, under-stimulation, homosexual rape) and examines the creation of non-threatening niches to address coping structures needed to move toward forgiveness and reconciliation. Prison Ministry: Hope Behind the Wall examines: meeting the incarcerated defining prison’s emotional ethos dealing with human breakdowns oppression in maximum-security prison components of empowerment needed for prison ministry Prison Ministry: Hope Behind the Wall also includes case studies of four inmates, an extensive bibliography, a glossary of prison terms, sample Bible studies, and sermon topics. The book is invaluable for anyone dealing with incarcerated youth and young adults in civilian or military correctional or juvenile detention facilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first century is marked by mass migration. Massive population movements of the last century have radically challenged our study and practice of mission. Where the church once rallied to go out into “the regions beyond,” Christian mission is currently required to respond and adapt to “missions around.” As a result, leaders in this field have been developing diaspora missiology to provide a missiological framework for understanding and participating in God’s redemptive mission among peoples living outside their places of origin. In this volume, experts in diaspora missiology from across the globe analyze the development of missions to migrants and add to our understanding of the contemporary church’s opportunities and responsibilities for mission amongst diaspora groups.
