Book The Principles of Courtesy

Download or read book The Principles of Courtesy written by George Winfred Hervey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Courtesy: With Hints and Observations on Manners and Habits The author is not aware that any work of this kind, ih tended for the perusal of Christians in general, has hitherto been attempted. He has happened to enter what is, in some sort, untravelled territory: for while some writers have touched upon it here and there, none have gone far beyond the secular customs of polished society. He has one time or another read many of the works on manners, which have been written during the last four hundred years, and knows not how widely they may have diffused their spirit over these pages. Two or three of them have afforded him direct aid: yet the work is substantially the result of independent observation and thought. Many of the following rules were suggested while studying the sacred statutes and the Observances of primitive believers. Some very valuable precepts, however, have been derived from contemporary examples of courtesy, who, while they were unaffected-1y obeying the refined dictates of evan gelical love, were unwittingly furnishing matter for these pages. Download or read book Fucking Good Manners written by Simon Griffin and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a book about how to be posh. We have some slightly bigger issues to deal with these days. We've all got a million things to do and are constantly connected to millions of other people all doing a million other things, so the faster we get things done the better, right? Wrong. Among all the busyness and confusion it seems we've forgotten a few of the basics in life, like the ability to treat one another with respect, dignity and some fucking good manners. Enter Simon Griffin, author of Fucking Apostrophes. From the entry-level stuff like saying please, thank you and sorry; manspreading on public transport and double-lane queuing at airports, to those that require just a little bit more thought, such as correct urinal protocol in public toilets, making tea rounds in the office and online public displays of affection, Simon imparts rules and advice to living life in a way that makes it just a bit better for everyone. With some liberal use of rude words thrown in to emphasise the point. With chapters on driving, social media, the environment, getting on with your neighbours, and the best manners for a trip to the cinema, this is the perfect gift for a manners enthusiast, or those in need of a gentle (but sweary) nudge in the right direction.

Book Miss Conduct s Mind over Manners

Download or read book Miss Conduct s Mind over Manners written by Robin Abrahams and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A witty, sophisticated guide to the new principles of modern social behavior, by a psychologist and popular alternative-etiquette-and-ethics guru This is no rule book about forks and calling cards. As a child, Robin Abrahams was bitterly disappointed when her parents forced her to have a lemonade stand rather than a booth for dispensing advice. In Miss Conduct's Mind over Manners, Abrahams, now a psychologist and the popular "Miss Conduct" columnist for The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, tackles the perplexing social dilemmas of our time: - Is it polite to say "Bless you" to a sneezing atheist? - Should a foreign person's name be pronounced in his native accent? - Does knitting at a meeting display a lack of attention or superior multitasking? - Can a restaurant these days still be so fancy that you cannot request a doggie bag with dignity? - What's a nice vegetarian to do if Gypsies give her bread smeared with lard? Bringing to bear the insights of psychology, Abrahams outlines eight steps to more graceful living that can be applied to uncertain situations-and for handling the inevitable mistakes-involving food, religion, children, pets, health, sex, money, and more. With humor, compassion, and gusto, Miss Conduct's Mind over Manners delivers thoughtful and thought-provoking advice for everyone navigating the complex world of modern human interaction.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Behave: A Pocket Manual of Republican Etiquette, and Guide to Correct Personal Habits, Embracing an Exposition of the Principles of Good Manners; Useful Hints on the Care of the Person, Eating, Drinking, Exercise, Habits, Dress, Self-Culture, and Behavior at Home Some persons have the instinct of courtesy so largely developed that they seem hardly to need culture at all. They are equal to any occasion, however novel. They never commit blunders, or if they do commit them, they seem not to be blunders in them. So there are those who Sing, speak, or draw intuitively - by inspiration. The great majority of us, however, must be content to acquire these arts by study and practice. In the same way we must acquire the art of behavior, so far as behavior is an art. We must possess, in the first place, a sense of equity, good-will toward our fellow-men, kind feelings, magnanimity and self-control. Cultivation will do the rest. But we must never forget that manners as well as morals are founded on certain eternal principles, and that while the letter killeth, the Spirit giveth life.
