Book A load impact evaluation of the Lower Colorado River Authority s Air Conditioner Direct Load Control Program

Download or read book A load impact evaluation of the Lower Colorado River Authority s Air Conditioner Direct Load Control Program written by Alexander MacGregor and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis establishes a framework and methodology for evaluating the load impacts of a residential appliance direct load control demand side management program. The methodology is then applied to evaluate the Lower Colorado River Authority's (LCRA) residential air conditioner cycling program. The objectives of the LCRA's load metering experiments are twofold. The first is to estimate the load impact of several cycling strategies. The second is to gain a better understanding of how the local population of air conditioners operates at different temperatures. These goals are accomplished with load shape analyses and duty cycle analyses, respectively. The results of the load shape analyses reveal that the average load reduction for single family houses at an average temperature of 96.2 degrees F is 0.75 kW/house when cycled at 55 percent. The duty cycle analyses illustrates the operating behavior of the monitored houses at different temperatures. The shape of a distribution of duty cycles is the key to ensuring load savings, and continued participation in the program. The analyses show that for the metered customers, duty cycles are distributed approximately normally.

Book Demand Side Load Control in Residential Buildings with HVAC Controller for Demand Response

Download or read book Demand Side Load Control in Residential Buildings with HVAC Controller for Demand Response written by Ji Hoon Yoon and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demand Response (DR) is a key factor to increase the efficiency of the power grid and has the potential to facilitate supply-demand balance. Demand side load control can contribute to reduce electricity consumption through DR programs. Especially, Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) load is one of the major contributors to peak loads. In the United States, HVAC systems are the largest consumers of electrical energy and a major contributor to peak demand. In this research, the Dynamic Demand Response Controller (DDRC) is proposed to reduce peak load as well as saves electricity cost while maintaining reasonable thermal comfort by controlling HVAC system. To reduce both peak load and energy cost, DDRC controls the set-point temperature in a thermostat depending on real-time price of electricity. Residential buildings are modeled with various internal loads using building energy modeling tools. The weather data in different climate zones are used to demonstrate that DDRC decreases peak loads and brings economic benefit in various locations. In addition, two different types of electricity wholesale markets are used to generate DR signals. To assess the performance of DDRC, the control algorithms are improved to consider the characteristics of building envelopes and HVAC equipment. Also, DDRC is designed to be deployed in various areas with different electricity wholesale markets. The indoor thermal comfort on temperature and humidity are considered based on ASHRAE standard 55. Finally, DDRC is developed to a hardware using embedded system. The hardware of DDRC is based on Advanced RISC Microcontroller (ARM) processor and senses both indoor and outdoor environment with Internet connection capability for DR. In addition, user friendly Graphic User Interface (GUI) is generated to control DDRC.

Book Smart Grid Control

Download or read book Smart Grid Control written by Jakob Stoustrup and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the role of systems and control. Focusing on the current and future development of smart grids in the generation and transmission of energy, it provides an overview of the smart grid control landscape, and the potential impact of the various investigations presented has for technical aspects of power generation and distribution as well as for human and economic concerns such as pricing, consumption and demand management. A tutorial exposition is provided in each chapter, describing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Topics in these chapters include: wide-area control; issues of estimation and integration at the transmission; distribution, consumers, and demand management; and cyber-physical security for smart grid control systems. The contributors describe the problems involved with each topic, and what impact these problems would have if not solved. The tutorial components and the opportunities and challenges detailed make this book ideal for anyone interested in new paradigms for modernized, smart power grids, and anyone in a field where control is applied. More specifically, it is a valuable resource for students studying smart grid control, and for researchers and academics wishing to extend their knowledge of the topic.

Book Incorporating Residential AC Load Control Into Ancillary Service Markets

Download or read book Incorporating Residential AC Load Control Into Ancillary Service Markets written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many pre-existing air conditioner load control programs can provide valuable operational flexibility but have not been incorporated into electricity ancillary service markets or grid operations. Multiple demonstrations have shown that residential air conditioner (AC) response can deliver resources quickly and can provide contingency reserves. A key policy hurdle to be overcome before AC load control can be fully incorporated into markets is how to balance the accuracy, cost, and complexity of methods available for the settlement of load curtailment. Overcoming this hurdle requires a means for assessing the accuracy of shorter-term AC load control demand reduction estimation approaches in an unbiased manner. This paper applies such a method to compare the accuracy of approaches varying in cost and complexity? including regression analysis, load matching and control group approaches? using feeder data, household data and AC end-use data. We recommend a practical approach for settlement, relying on an annually updated set of tables, with pre-calculated reduction estimates. These tables allow users to look up the demand reduction per device based on daily maximum temperature, geographic region and hour of day, simplifying settlement and providing a solution to the policy problem presented in this paper.

Book Direct Load Control for an Aggregation of Air Conditioners ACs Using a Setpoint Variation Control Strategy

Download or read book Direct Load Control for an Aggregation of Air Conditioners ACs Using a Setpoint Variation Control Strategy written by Eberechukwu Judith Ezemaduka and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermostatically controlled loads account for a significant amount of energy consumption in commercial and residential buildings[1][2]. This thesis studies the impact of controlling the thermostats of air conditioners (ACs) as a way to implement peak load shaving with consideration of end-use device performance. A proposed system model which allows the utility to implement peak load shaving as a component of day-ahead planning for ACs in a large hotel is developed. In the experimental simulation, the results show on-peak demand reduction which is beneficial to the utility, however, the magnitude of the aggregate load that can be shifted as a contribution to peak load shaving may have a significant negative impact on customer comfort as measured by room temperature. The research contribution includes a setpoint variation control strategy that takes into account the information from the utility and sorting of ACs to perform peak load shaving and reduce the negative impact on end-user performance.
