Book Big Potential

Download or read book Big Potential written by Shawn Achor and published by Currency. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “With cutting-edge research, penetrating insights, and practical examples, Shawn Achor describes a new conception of ‘success,’ and in doing so, reveals exciting new strategies we can use to meet our highest potential.”—Gretchen Rubin, bestselling author of The Happiness Project “A vibrant book on how to bring out the best in others—and how they can bring out the best in us.”—Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again and host of the podcast WorkLife In a world that thrives on competition and individual achievement, we’re measuring and pursuing potential incorrectly. Pursuing success in isolation—pushing others away as we push ourselves too hard—not only limits our potential but makes us more stressed and disconnected than ever. Harvard-trained researcher Shawn Achor reveals a better approach. With exciting new research combining neuroscience and psychology with Big Data, Achor shows that our potential is not limited by what we alone can achieve. Instead, it is determined by how we complement, contribute to, and benefit from the abilities and achievements of people around us. When we—as individuals, leaders, and parents—chase only individual achievement, we leave vast sources of potential untapped. But once we put “others” back into the equation, and work to make others better, we ignite a Virtuous Cycle of cascading successes that amplify our own. The dramatic shifts in how we approach work today demand an equally dramatic shift in our approach to success. In Big Potential, Achor draws on cutting-edge original research as well as his work with nearly half of the Fortune 100 and with places like NASA, the NFL and the NBA, and offers a new path to thriving in the modern world.

  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Nancy Farese written by and published by Mw Editions. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's time to look seriously at child's play. In 2017, award-winning author-photographer Nancy Farese visited Bangladesh to photograph the Rohingya refugee crisis, and she saw firsthand the toll of extreme trauma and the most violent tendencies of humankind. She also saw, everywhere, on the edge of every frame, children at play, following their instinctual drive to adapt, socialize, and heal, in defiance of the darker forces all around them. This documentary photography book by Farese focuses on child's play in fourteen countries. Play is where we learn creativity, collaboration, and the emotional flexibility to survive in a chaotic and ambiguous world. She invites us to consider how this universal activity-and the concept of "free play" as a self-motivated and joyful exploration-is threatened by the unrelenting forces of technology, consumerism, and even overparenting.Potential Space offers a global view of a mundane activity that powerfully shapes who we are both as individuals, and as a society. Play is also where we lose ourselves in time yet find ourselves most fully alive. However, in our modern world free play is under threat, redefined by the converging forces of technology, consumerism, and even overparenting. Farese looks at children's play through a wide lens, providing a look within, and beyond, the challenges of our time toward a more hopeful and resilient perspective. We know it when we see it, anywhere in the world; the beauty of play is that it becomes both a window and a mirror, providing an opening for empathy, and peace.

Book Realizing the Potential of C4I

Download or read book Realizing the Potential of C4I written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-06-17 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid progress in information and communications technologies is dramatically enhancing the strategic role of information, positioning effective exploitation of these technology advances as a critical success factor in military affairs. These technology advances are drivers and enablers for the "nervous system" of the militaryâ€"its command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) systemsâ€"to more effectively use the "muscle" side of the military. Authored by a committee of experts drawn equally from the military and commercial sectors, Realizing the Potential of C4I identifies three major areas as fundamental challenges to the full Department of Defense (DOD) exploitation of C4I technologyâ€"information systems security, interoperability, and various aspects of DOD process and culture. The book details principles by which to assess DOD efforts in these areas over the long term and provides specific, more immediately actionable recommendations. Although DOD is the focus of this book, the principles and issues presented are also relevant to interoperability, architecture, and security challenges faced by government as a whole and by large, complex public and private enterprises across the economy.

Book The Potential Distribution Theorem and Models of Molecular Solutions

Download or read book The Potential Distribution Theorem and Models of Molecular Solutions written by Tom L. Beck and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of statistical thermodynamic molecular theory is fundamental to the appreciation of molecular solutions. This complex subject has been simplified by the authors with down-to-earth presentations of molecular theory. Using the potential distribution theorem (PDT) as the basis, the text provides a discussion of practical theories in conjunction with simulation results. The authors discuss the field in a concise and simple manner, illustrating the text with useful models of solution thermodynamics and numerous exercises. Modern quasi-chemical theories that permit statistical thermodynamic properties to be studied on the basis of electronic structure calculations are given extended development, as is the testing of those theoretical results with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The book is intended for students taking up research problems of molecular science in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, nanotechnology and biotechnology.

Book Endoscopic Surgery of the Potential Anatomical Spaces

Download or read book Endoscopic Surgery of the Potential Anatomical Spaces written by Attilio Maria Farinon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-02-04 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Potential anatomical spaces" have attracted surgeons in the past and in recent years. Due to the development of modern imaging techniques and the advent of minimally invasive surgery, access to these spaces has become a real surgical option. The purpose of this book is to document the challenges related to "potential anatomical spaces", traditionally described as "hidden" spaces. The spread of video-assisted surgery and its application in the management of diseases involving organs or anatomical structures placed in the "potential spaces" (neck, mediastinum, pro-peritoneum and retro-peritoneum, subfacial space of the leg, and axilla), has rendered their surgical anatomy less abstract.

Book Assessing the potential for civil military integration selected case studies

Download or read book Assessing the potential for civil military integration selected case studies written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Office of Technology Assessment, at the request of the Congress, has conducted a series of assessments of the Nation's ability to provide for its future national security technology and industrial needs. In the most recent report, Assessing the potential for Civil- Military Integration, OTA examined the potential for making greater use of common technologies, processes, labor, equipment, material, and/or facilities to meet both defense and commercial needs. This effort, often termed civil-military integration or CMI, is believed by many observers to be an essential element of a successful U.S. national security strategy. OTA's assessment found that greater CMI is possible, and confirmed the potential for cost savings and increased technology transfer as the result of increased integration. The assessment noted that CMI appears essential if defense is to take advantage of many rapidly developing commercial technologies.

Book Unlocking the Potential of Post Industrial Cities

Download or read book Unlocking the Potential of Post Industrial Cities written by Matthew E. Kahn and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can urban leaders in Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis make the smart choices that can lead their city to make a comeback? The urban centers of New York City, Seattle, and San Francisco have enjoyed tremendous economic success and population growth in recent years. At the same time, cities like Baltimore and Detroit have experienced population loss and economic decline. People living in these cities are not enjoying the American Dream of upward mobility. How can post-industrial cities struggling with crime, pollution, poverty, and economic decline make a comeback? In Unlocking the Potential of Post-Industrial Cities, Matthew E. Kahn and Mac McComas explore why some people and places thrive during a time of growing economic inequality and polarization—and some don't. They examine six underperforming cities—Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis—that have struggled from 1970 to present. Drawing from the field of urban economics, Kahn and McComas ask how the public and private sectors can craft policies and make investments that create safe, green cities where young people reach their full potential. The authors analyze long-run economic and demographic trends. They also highlight recent lessons from urban economics in labor market demand and supply, neighborhood quality of life, and local governance while scrutinizing strategies to lift people out of poverty. These cities are all at a fork in the road. Depending on choices made today, they could enjoy a significant comeback—but only if local leaders are open to experimentation and innovation while being honest about failure and constructive evaluation. Unlocking the Potential of Post-Industrial Cities provides a roadmap for how urban policy makers, community members, and practitioners in the public and private sector can work together with researchers to discover how all cities can solve the most pressing modern urban challenges.
