Book Chains of Love and Beauty

Download or read book Chains of Love and Beauty written by Carolyn Dever and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why a monumental diary by an aunt and niece who published poetry together as “Michael Field”—and who were partners and lovers for decades—is one of the great unknown works of late-Victorian and early modernist literature Michael Field, the renowned late-Victorian poet, was well known to be the pseudonym of Katharine Bradley (1846–1914) and her niece, Edith Cooper (1862–1913). Less well known is that for three decades, the women privately maintained a romantic relationship and kept a double diary, sharing the page as they shared a bed and eventually producing a 9,500-page, twenty-nine-volume story of love, life, and art in the fin de siècle. In Chains of Love and Beauty, the first book about the diary, Carolyn Dever makes the case for this work as a great unknown “novel” of the nineteenth century and as a bridge between George Eliot and Virginia Woolf, Victorian marriage plot and modernist experimentation. While Bradley and Cooper remained committed to publishing poetry under a single, male pseudonym, the diary, which they entitled Works and Days and hoped would be published after their deaths, allowed them to realize literary ambitions that were unfulfilled during their lifetime. The women also used the diary, which remains largely unpublished, to negotiate their art, desires, and frustrations, as well as their relationships with contemporary literary celebrities, including Robert Browning, Oscar Wilde, William Butler Yeats, and Walter Pater. Showing for the first time why Works and Days is a great experimental work of late-Victorian and early modernist writing, one that sheds startling new light on gender, sexuality, and authorship, Dever reveals how Bradley and Cooper wrote their shared life as art, and their art as life, on pages of intimacy that they wanted to share with the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grief, heart shattering, soul searching, dark nights alone, grief. Grief has a strange way of making one whole; whole in ways that all the happiness in the world cannot ever do for one. And, wholeness only comes after grief is faced with all of the self/Self. If one avoids the process, the gold of wholeness is never achieved. I did not know in 2001, while I was falling in love, that I would eventually go on a journey to wholeness; all I knew, at that time, was that I was not loved in return, that I could never be loved in return, and there was nothing I could do to change this. For some reason, at that point in my life, either due to age, or circumstance, I decided to walk on the rock filled path of grief to see where it might lead me. What resulted was wholeness, and Magnolia Dances, a poetic diary of unrequited love. For if we never face love in all of its glory and devastation, but only fear love, and run from it, who are we after all? The heart can only grow with tears that are allowed to fall...falling in love, magnolia dancing, flying home. "Magnolia Dances" is now available for purchase from Xlibris.

Book Love s Diary

  • Publisher : Patrice Henderson
  • Release : 2015-02-20
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 54 pages

Download or read book Love s Diary written by Lady Stylistique and published by Patrice Henderson. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love’s Diary explains what happens with love while people experience certain things in their relationships. If love had a diary of her own, this is what it would sound like. After each poem, you have the opportunity to write down your own thoughts on love, which makes this your personal diary of love. Love is a precious gift from God that we all possess in some kind of form and what we do with this gift reflects who we are. As a result, our intimate relationships will either grow or diminish. It’s important to understand that love is not determined by what occurs in our relationships. Love is always present but we may not always be present with love.

Book The Richard Burton Diaries

Download or read book The Richard Burton Diaries written by Richard Burton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The irresistible, candid diaries of Richard Burton, published in their entirety “Just great fun, and written out of an engaging, often comical bewilderment: How did a poor Welshman become not only a star, but a player on the world stage that was Elizabeth Taylor’s fame?”—Hilton Als, NewYorker.com “Of real interest is that Burton was almost as good a writer as an actor, read as many as three books a day, haunted bookstores in every city he set foot in, bought countless books on every conceivable subject and evaluated them rather shrewdly. . . . Apt writing abounds.”—John Simon, New York Times Book Review Irresistibly magnetic on stage, mesmerizing in movies, seven times an Academy Award nominee, Richard Burton rose from humble beginnings in Wales to become Hollywood's most highly paid actor and one of England's most admired Shakespearean performers. His epic romance with Elizabeth Taylor, his legendary drinking and story-telling, his dazzling purchases (enormous diamonds, a jet, homes on several continents), and his enormous talent kept him constantly in the public eye. Yet the man behind the celebrity façade carried a surprising burden of insecurity and struggled with the peculiar challenges of a life lived largely in the spotlight. This volume publishes Burton's extensive personal diaries in their entirety for the first time. His writings encompass many years—from 1939, when he was still a teenager, to 1983, the year before his death—and they reveal him in his most private moments, pondering his triumphs and demons, his loves and his heartbreaks. The diary entries appear in their original sequence, with annotations to clarify people, places, books, and events Burton mentions. From these hand-written pages emerges a multi-dimensional man, no mere flashy celebrity. While Burton touched shoulders with shining lights—among them Olivia de Havilland, John Gielgud, Claire Bloom, Laurence Olivier, John Huston, Dylan Thomas, and Edward Albee—he also played the real-life roles of supportive family man, father, husband, and highly intelligent observer. His diaries offer a rare and fresh perspective on his own life and career, and on the glamorous decades of the mid-twentieth century.
