Book The Plenary Inspiration of the Holy Scriptures

Download or read book The Plenary Inspiration of the Holy Scriptures written by John H. Elliott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plenary Inspiration of the Holy Scriptures: A Paper Read Before the Society of the Alumni the Theological Seminary of June 24, 1885 The Convocation of Canterbury at its recent meeting thanked "the revisers of the authorized version of the Old Testament for the unwearied labor and singular diligence which they have expended during many years in completing the weighty task entrusted to them." Their unwearied labor and singular diligence were emphasized by the statement of Archdeacon Harrison, that the "revision, as completed in eighty-five sessions, occupied seven hundred and ninety-two days, and that on each of these days the company generally sat for six hours." At the same meeting of Convocation the Bishop of Winchester declared that "great thanks were due to the Americans for their assistance," and we are reminded as we gather on this hill that to the learned revisers in the Old World there were added learned revisers from the New, and that in our own modern Bible-house, the same "unwearied labor and singular diligence" were expended which won the thanks of Convocation for the toilers in the venerable Jerusalem chamber. We know, too, that to the toil of the two years devoted to the sessions there must be added the toil in the closet and the cloister during the remainder of the fourteen years devoted to ascertaining the "pure and native significance of the Word." And then to the labor on the Old there must be added the labor on the New Testament. I am to speak to you to-day of the Plenary Inspiration of the Bible; and I cannot but regard these colossal labors, and the intense interest felt in them by the people who speak the language of the revision, as testifying, however unconsciously, to the prevalence of a very high doctrine of inspiration. Download or read book Practical Handbook for the Study of the Bible and of Bible Literature written by Michael Seisenberger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Handbook for the Study of the Bible and of Bible Literature: Including Biblical Geography, Antiquties, Introduction to the Old and the New Testament, and Hermeneutics The treatment in the book itself, however, will be found amply sufficient for dealing with that ever-increasing number of souls who pick up rationalist conclusions anywhere and everywhere, and are thus, somewhat needlessly, disturbed in their faith. The editor would beg, ' with all deference, to call attention to a theological distinction which would seem to have come into prominence since the author first wrote his book, and which does not appear to have been made sufficiently clear even in the latest edition. It is the distinction between inspiration and revelation. All the Bible is inspired, but not all the Bible is revealed. A sacred writer, for instance, might write down an account of an event as he had seen it or heard it from an eye-witness. The source of his information is purely natural. In writing it down, however, he does so under the influence Of that supernatural charism which is known as inspiration. On the other hand, he might have the knowledge infused into his mind directly by God. Such was the way in which St. Paul received the information for his classical passage on the Holy Eucharist. That was a reve lation. And, since he was moved by the Holy Spirit to embody it in one of his epistles, it was also a part of inspiration. The distinction is necessary, if one is to understand the difference between Catholic plenary inspiration and Protestant literal inspiration. The Douay version of Scripture has been generally adopted, but there are about three or four places where this did not liter ally agree with the German version used by the author. These cases have been rendered by a literal translation of the German. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Disturbing Divine Behavior

Download or read book Disturbing Divine Behavior written by Eric A. Seibert and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should we understand biblical texts where God is depicted as acting irrationally, violently, or destructively? If we distance ourselves from disturbing portrayals of God, how should we understand the authority of Scripture? How does the often wrathful God portrayed in the Old Testament relate to the God of love proclaimed in the New Testament? Is that contrast even accurate? Disturbing Divine Behavior addresses these perennially vexing questions for the student of the Bible. Eric A. Seibert calls for an engaged and discerning reading of the Old Testament that distinguishes the particular literary and theological goals achieved through narrative characterizations of God from the rich understanding of the divine to which the Old Testament as a whole points. Providing illuminating reflections on theological reading as well, this book will be a welcome resource for any readers who puzzle over disturbing representations of God in the Bible.

Book Inspiration and Canonicity of the Scriptures

Download or read book Inspiration and Canonicity of the Scriptures written by R. Laird Harris and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the modern debate on biblical interpretation and verbal inerrancy, this book gives weighty evidence for the historic Christian position that the Bible, the sacred canon, is the very truth of God and that it can be interpreted, understood, and applied in our time. The book considers the phenomena and data of the Bible and finds them consistent with the teaching of Christ and the apostles that they are both true and meaningful in any culture. Inspiration of the Bible and the canonical status of its books are closely interrelated matters, but the treatment of both subjects in one volume is all to rare. In the treatment of the canon, the book quotes extensively from the sources--the very early Christian writers as well as recent finds--the Dead Sea Scrolls and the books and papyri from Nag Hammadi in Egypt. It combines the extensive historical evidence with the witness and claims of the Bible itself. Reviews of the original work--that it was well-documented and thorough but profitable for any serious Christian layman--are still applicable to the revised and updated edition.
