Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Atonement I have but further to say that the work discusses the leading objections to the Atonement as a vicarious sacrifice and satisfaction to God. It contends that Christ in our stead bore, to the extent which public justice demanded, or which God as the Great Moral Magistrate demanded, the penal consequences of our sins. Representatives of the principal theories are brought forward and criticized the true idea is set off to advantage as on the background of the false and the Biblical view of Christ as the Divine-human Redeemer and the propitiation for the sins of the world maintained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lamb of God: Or the Scriptural Philosophy of the Atonement The following pages are written with an earnest desire to set forth clearly and helpfully the ground of the Christian's hope. The effort is a sincere and humble response to the oft-repeated request of those who have heard this exposition of Bible truth presented by word of mouth. It is not an exhaustive treatise, and it may embrace little that will be new to the well-instructed Christian. No attempt has been made to consider all that is included in the Saviors work for us, His sacrificial death, in its primary significance as our propitiation, being the point chiefly in view. It is hoped, however, that many a seeker after truth will here find light upon some of his difficulties respecting the way of salvation; and even that mature disciples will experience new assurance and new joy as again they "survey the wondrous cross." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement Tms object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theology is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen, who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theologian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to trans late the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of everyday practical religion and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title The Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Book excerpt: "The doctrine of the Atonement is the distinctive doctrine of Christianity. Over the course of many centuries of reflection, highly diverse interpretations of the doctrine have been proposed. In the context of this history of interpretation, Eleonore Stump considers the doctrine afresh with philosophical care. Whatever exactly the Atonement is, it is supposed to include a solution to the problems of the human condition, especially its guilt and shame. Stump canvasses the major interpretations of the doctrine that attempt to explain this solution and argues that all of them have serious shortcomings. In their place, she argues for an interpretation that is both novel and yet traditional and that has significant advantages over other interpretations, including Anselm's well-known account of the doctrine. In the process, she also discusses love, union, guilt, shame, forgiveness, retribution, punishment, shared attention, mind-reading, empathy, and various other issues in moral psychology and ethics."--

Book Discussions on the Atonement

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discussions on the Atonement: Is It Vicarious? I am bold enough to ask, Has this scheme of Substitution been duly examined in the fresh light which we are able to bring to bear upon it And can it fairly be sustained upon the soundest principles of Scripture-interpretation? Does it not involve incongruities which should not be countenanced? And is it not an unhappy condition of the Church, that ear nest, faithful, and intelligent men should be found entertain ing serious doubts against any portions of the Holy Scriptures, because of interpretations that make the Scriptures speak against themselves, and against the convictions of the truth that is in them? Can the Church prosper where a hollow profession is made, or where secret unbelief prevails? Nay more, granting that there were no doubts -can the Church prosper where the questionable belief is held, that all reliance for salvation is to be placed upon a purely historic event an event objectively standing apart and entirely by itself, and where little or no reliance is placed on that subjective change of heart and of life which constitutes our Regenera tion? And can a more consistent and Scriptural exposition be introduced and sustained on sounder and more irrefragable premisses? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atoning Sacrifice: A Display of Love Not of Wrath Even to discuss the subject of atonement is at the present, putting to hazard a man's good name, if not his standing in the church. If he departs from the beaten path, the cry of wanderer is raised. If he refuses to use old names and old forms of expression, he is in danger of being thought heretical. Scarcely can he venture even to discuss minor points relative to the subject, without finding some one to cry out against him. This is nafon tunate in regard to discovering what is true, and discour aging to those who incline to pursue investigations of this nature. Still there are minds deeply enough engaged in this great cause, to venture upon the pursuit of what is scriptural, and upon the rejection of what philosophy has added to the Scriptures. Ultimately, as I believe, every Christian mind must accept a similar point of view, combining as it does the idealism of Christianity, in virtue of which Christians confess that the world's salvation has not to be gained by human effort in days to come, but to be received from God. Book Ethics and Atonement Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ethics and Atonement Classic Reprint written by W. F. Lofthouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics and Atonement The attempt to add to the many books that deal with the Atonement needs some excuse. Although, however, the subject has been so widely discussed, there is one side from which it has not often been approached, the side of those who arc not greatly concerned with theology, but arc keenly interested in morals and in life. Yet it is from this side that most people come to the consideration of the Atonement. Hence questions are often asked which treatises on the Atonement do not appear to answer, and the Atonement itself, instead of being the illuminating centre of theology, becomes a stumbling-block in the way of any real acceptance of religion. In the following pages I have endeavoured to maintain that the doctrine of the Atonement is not an artificial theorem or an inexplicable or unethical dogma, but that it has its roots in the foundations of all human life, and is really the highest expression of the law of all moral and social progress; and that ethics itself is of little use, as a practical science, unless completed by the Atonement. I have to thank Professor Palmer of Harvard University, the Rev. J. S. Lidgctt, M.A., Warden of the Bermondsey Settlement, and my colleague, Dr J. G. Tasker, for valuable advice in connexion with large portions of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
