Book The Philosophical Influences of Mao Zedong

Download or read book The Philosophical Influences of Mao Zedong written by Robert Elliott Allinson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What shaped the ideas and actions of one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century? Presenting a new account of Mao Zedong's lifelong engagement with philosophy, Robert Allinson reveals the extent to which Chinese and Western thinkers determined Mao's political career. For the first time Mao's understanding of early philosophers such as Confucius, Laozi, Aristotle, Hegel, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche is looked at in close detail. Drawing upon his exposure as a student to both traditional Chinese and Western philosophy, Allinson shows how Mao's reading of Marxism utilized concepts from the traditional Yijing to produce a philosophy that departs from Engels and the Soviet model. By revealing how Mao's reading of Western political thought, as well as misreadings of traditional Chinese thought impacted his thinking, Allinson presents a fresh and challenging study of the man who ushered in anti-intellectualism during the dark period of the Cultural Revolution.

Download or read book The Philosophical Influences of Mao Zedong written by Robert Elliott Allinson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This philosophical Mao is a fresh portrait of the mind of the ruler who changed the face of China in the twentieth century. The book traces the influences of both traditional Chinese and traditional pre-Marxist Western philosophy on the early Mao and how these influences guided the development of his thought. It reveals evidence of the creative dimensions of Mao's thinking and how he wove the yin/yang pattern of change depicted in the Yijing, the Chinese Book of Changes, into the Marxist dialectic to bring ancient Chinese philosophy to mark changes in twentieth century thought. Mao's lifetime philosophical journey includes his interpretations of and comments on both Chinese and Western philosophers. His deep, metaphysical reflections, uncanny prognostications and pensive speculations from his early pre-Marxist period to his later philosophical years prove to be as startling as they are thought-provoking.

Book Marxist Philosophy in China From Qu Qiubai to Mao Zedong 1923 1945

Download or read book Marxist Philosophy in China From Qu Qiubai to Mao Zedong 1923 1945 written by Nick Knight and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the history of Marxist philosophy in China between 1923 and 1945 through the writings and activities of four philosophers: Qu Qiubai, Ai Siqi, Li Da and Mao Zedong. Two of these philosophers – Qu and Mao – were also political activists and leaders, but their contribution to this history is as important, if not more so, than the contribution of Ai and Li who were predominantly philosophers and scholars. The inclusion of Qu and Mao underlines the intimate connection between philosophy and politics in the revolutionary movement in China. It is not possible to speak credibly of Marxist philosophy in China without considering the political context within which its introduction, elaboration and dissemination proceeded. Indeed, each of the philosophers considered in this book repudiated the notion that the study of philosophy was a scholastic intellectual exercise devoid of political significance. Each of these philosophers regarded himself as a revolutionary, and considered philosophy to be useful precisely because it could facilitate a comprehension of the world and so accelerate efforts to change it. By the same token, each of these philosophers took philosophy seriously; each bent his mind to the daunting task of mastering the arcane and labyrinthian philosophical system of dialectical materialism. Philosophy might well be political, they believed, but this was no excuse for philosophical dilettantism.

Book Mao Zedong and China in the Twentieth Century World

Download or read book Mao Zedong and China in the Twentieth Century World written by Rebecca E. Karl and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-13 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout this lively and concise historical account of Mao Zedong’s life and thought, Rebecca E. Karl places the revolutionary leader’s personal experiences, social visions and theory, military strategies, and developmental and foreign policies in a dynamic narrative of the Chinese revolution. She situates Mao and the revolution in a global setting informed by imperialism, decolonization, and third worldism, and discusses worldwide trends in politics, the economy, military power, and territorial sovereignty. Karl begins with Mao’s early life in a small village in Hunan province, documenting his relationships with his parents, passion for education, and political awakening during the fall of the Qing dynasty in late 1911. She traces his transition from liberal to Communist over the course of the next decade, his early critiques of the subjugation of women, and the gathering force of the May 4th movement for reform and radical change. Describing Mao’s rise to power, she delves into the dynamics of Communist organizing in an overwhelmingly agrarian society, and Mao’s confrontations with Chiang Kaishek and other nationalist conservatives. She also considers his marriages and romantic liaisons and their relation to Mao as the revolutionary founder of Communism in China. After analyzing Mao’s stormy tenure as chairman of the People’s Republic of China, Karl concludes by examining his legacy in China from his death in 1976 through the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Book Li Da And Marxist Philosophy In China

Download or read book Li Da And Marxist Philosophy In China written by Nick Knight and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1998-10-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Li Da (1890–1966) was one of China's most important Marxist intellectuals and a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party. He played a major role in the introduction of Marxist philosophy and theory to China and in its dissemination among Chinese revolutionaries. His works are now regarded in China as classics of Marxist philosophy, and he is numbered among the ten most influential Chinese intellectuals of this century. Yet, almost nothing has been written about Li Da in English. In this seminal study, Knight analyzes Li Da's contribution to the flowering of Marxist philosophy and theory in China, examining Li's writings and placing them in the context of the Marxist tradition. Knight also explores Li Da's philosophical relationship with Mao Zedong, who was heavily influenced by Li's works. Through the lens of Li's life and thought, this book provides a detailed assessment of the introduction and dissemination of Marxist philosophy and social theory in China.

Book Chuang Tzu for Spiritual Transformation

Download or read book Chuang Tzu for Spiritual Transformation written by Robert Elliott Allinson and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fundamentally new interpretation of the philosophy of the Chuang-Tzu. It is the first full-length work of its kind which argues that a deep level cognitive structure exists beneath an otherwise random collection of literary anecdotes, cryptic sayings, and dark allusions. The author carefully analyzes myths, legends, monstrous characters, paradoxes, parables and linguistic puzzles as strategically placed techniques for systematically tapping and channeling the spiritual dimensions of the mind. Allinson takes issue with commentators who have treated the Chuang-Tzu as a minor foray into relativism. Chapter titles are re-translated, textual fragments are relocated, and inauthentic, outer miscellaneous chapters are carefully separated from the transformatory message of the authentic, inner chapters. Each of the inner chapters is shown to be a building block to the next so that they can only be understood as forming a developmental sequence. In the end, the reader is presented with a clear, consistent and coherent view of the Chuang-Tzu that is more in accord with its stature as a major philosophical work.
