Book excerpt: An instant New York Times bestseller The latest standalone novel from Jasper Fforde, the bestselling author the Thursday Next series and the forthcoming standalone The Constant Rabbit Every Winter, the human population hibernates. During those bitterly cold four months, the nation is a snow-draped landscape of desolate loneliness, devoid of human activity. Well, not quite. Your name is Charlie Worthing and it's your first season with the Winter Consuls, the committed but mildly unhinged group of misfits who are responsible for ensuring the hibernatory safe passage of the sleeping masses. You are investigating an outbreak of viral dreams which you dismiss as nonsense; nothing more than a quirky artefact born of the sleeping mind. When the dreams start to kill people, it's unsettling. When you get the dreams too, it's weird. When they start to come true, you begin to doubt your sanity. But teasing truth from the Winter is never easy: You have to avoid the Villains and their penchant for murder, kidnapping and stamp collecting; ensure you aren't eaten by Nightwalkers, whose thirst for human flesh can only be satisfied by comfort food; and sidestep the increasingly less-than-mythical WinterVolk. But so long as you remember to wrap up warmly, you'll be fine.

Download or read book Going Right written by Logan Gelbrich and published by Hts Publishing, Incorporated. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going Right: A Logical Justification for Pursuing Your Dreams is a world-view shattering model of decision-making. In this book, we are offered liberation from our socialized, detached, and unsustainable methods of making life's most meaningful choices. This is a fresh invitation to integrate our emotional passions, using our rational brain, while remaining grounded in real-world experiences. Gelbrich builds on leading academic theories and exceptional practical illustrations to support his proposed decision-making model. Surprisingly, most adults today, who are privileged enough not to worry about their basic survival needs, operate as if pursuing the loftiest version of themselves poses a threat to their safety and an offense to the social norms of their lives. Many point to the risks of losing their own happiness, the possibility to not providing for themselves and dependents, and the social consequences of chasing down their ideal self-expression to fuel their logic against reaching for something higher. But basing the most meaningful of our choices, our dreams, on assumptions, and predicting the effects of our decisions on our most important obligations is robbing us and our communities of the happiness, our ability to provide for self and others, and social benefits that we find ourselves instinctively protecting in the first place. Going Right explores the essentially grand, utilitarian advantages of an alternative logic and unlocks universal modern truths of pursuing our peak expression. The enduring stoic path of significance presented here leads us to hold greater commitments, practice deep work, remain resilient to adversity, experience moments of creative flow, and curate transferable skills. Whether in the context of relationships, work, or lifestyle, Going Right presents a solid case that braving your evolutionary resistances to continually pursue your dreams is truly the most logical choice you can make.

Book excerpt: A young couple's toxic Instagram crush spins out of control and unleashes a sinister creature in this twisted, viciously funny, "bananas good" story (Carmen Maria Machado). "Um, holy shit...This novel will be the most fun you'll have this summer." —Emily Temple, Literary Hub Remy and Alicia, a couple of insecure service workers, are not particularly happy together. But they are bound by a shared obsession with Jen, a beautiful former co-worker of Remy’s who now seems to be following her bliss as a globe-trotting jewelry designer. In and outside the bedroom, Remy and Alicia's entire relationship revolves around fantasies of Jen, whose every Instagram caption, outfit, and new age mantra they know by heart. Imagine their confused excitement when they run into Jen, in the flesh, and she invites them on a surfing trip to the Hamptons with her wealthy boyfriend and their group. Once there, Remy and Alicia try (a little too hard) to fit into Jen’s exalted social circle, but violent desire and class resentment bubble beneath the surface of this beachside paradise, threatening to erupt. As small disturbances escalate into outright horror, we find ourselves tumbling with Remy and Alicia into an uncanny alternate reality, one shaped by their most unspeakable, deviant, and intoxicating fantasies. Is this what “self-actualization” looks like? Part millennial social comedy, part psychedelic horror, and all wildly entertaining, A Touch of Jen is a sly, unflinching examination of the hidden drives that lurk just outside the frame of our carefully curated selves.

Book Travelling Concepts in the Humanities

Download or read book Travelling Concepts in the Humanities written by Mieke Bal and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2002-11-02 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempting to bridge the gap between specialised scholarship in the humanistic disciplines and an interdisciplinary project of cultural analysis, Mieke Bal has written an intellectual travel guide that charts the course 'beyond' cultural studies. As with any guide, it can be used in a number of ways and the reader can follow or willfully ignore any of the paths it maps or signposts. Bal's focus for this book is the idea that interdisciplinarity in the humanities - necessary, exciting, serious - must seek its heuristic and methodological basis in concepts rather than its methods. Concepts are not grids to put over an object. The counterpart of any given concept is the cultural text or work or 'thing' that constitutes the object of analysis. No concept is meaningful for cultural analysis unless it helps us to understand the object better on its own terms. Bal offers the reader a sustained theoretical reflection on how to 'do' cultural analysis through a tentative practice of doing just that. This offers a concrete practice to theoretical constructs, and allows the proposed method more accessibility.
