Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconstructs the manifold ways by which Dutch people of seventeenth-century New York took hold of the New World. As the author reminds us, the Dutch understood themselves to be republican, urban, mobile, mercantile, and amphibious; in short, properly Dutch. She shows how the Dutch possessed the land, traded over it, surrendered it to the English, and then lived out their lives balancing a "gaze" that the conquerors had for land against their own.

Book The Rude Hand of Innovation

Download or read book The Rude Hand of Innovation written by David G. Hackett and published by New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This path-breaking study analyzes the social and religious transformation of Albany, New York, from the town's colonial origins through industrialization in the early nineteenth century. Rather than see the transformation of traditional societies as a process of modernization, Hackett adopts a broader conception of religion as a cultural system and argues that culture influences social order differently in different historical periods. During most of Albany's colonial period, the Dutch townspeople absorbed British people and customs into their Calvinist way of life. Following the Revolution, large scale immigration, urbanization, and the initial spurt of an industrial economy transformed Albany into a bustling commercial center. At the same time new political and religious ideologies that disagreed among themselves yet together advocated economic growth, democracy, education, and individual rights, challenged and finally replaced Calvinism. Drawing on the resources of sociology, social history, and religion, this study illuminates not only the social history of Albany but also presents a new interpretation of the relationship between religion and social order in American history.

Book Contributions for the Genealogies of the First Settlers of the Ancient County of Albany from 1630 to 1800

Download or read book Contributions for the Genealogies of the First Settlers of the Ancient County of Albany from 1630 to 1800 written by Jonathan Pearson and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1984 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first settlers of Albany, New York were Dutch; in the 18th century, however, Albany claimed an admixture of English and Palatine Germans, the three nationalities together providing the axis on which this genealogical compendium of Albany families rests. Typically, the articles, which are arranged in alphabetical order by family name, give the names of husbands, wives and children and dates of birth, marriage and death, and they are laced with incidental references to land holdings, occupations, and places of residence. A key to Dutch surnames, which are occasionally or constantly omitted in the ancient records of Albany and Schenectady, is prefixed to the work. An index of 7,000 entries helps to coordinate this research. In the preparation of materials for this work, the compiler drew on the baptism and marriage registers of the First Reformed Church of Albany, laboring as well with records from other sources, such as wills, deeds, mortgages, marriage contracts, and a variety of other matter found in the offices of the Albany County and City Clerks.

Book Indians and Colonists at the Crossroads of Empire

Download or read book Indians and Colonists at the Crossroads of Empire written by Timothy J. Shannon and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the eve of the Seven Years' War in North America, the British crown convened the Albany Congress, an Anglo-Iroquois treaty conference, in response to a crisis that threatened imperial expansion. British authorities hoped to address the impending collapse of Indian trade and diplomacy in the northern colonies, a problem exacerbated by uncooperative, resistant colonial governments. In the first book on the subject in more than forty-five years, Timothy J. Shannon definitively rewrites the historical record on the Albany Congress. Challenging the received wisdom that has equated the Congress and the plan of colonial union it produced with the origins of American independence, Shannon demonstrates conclusively the Congress's importance in the wider context of Britain's eighteenth-century Atlantic empire. In the process, the author poses a formidable challenge to the Iroquois Influence Thesis. The Six Nations, he writes, had nothing to do with the drafting of the Albany Plan, which borrowed its model of constitutional union not from the Iroquois but from the colonial delegates' British cousins. Far from serving as a dress rehearsal for the Constitutional Convention, the Albany Congress marked, for colonists and Iroquois alike, a passage from an independent, commercial pattern of intercultural relations to a hierarchical, bureaucratic imperialism wielded by a distant authority.
