Download or read book The Grapes of New York Classic Reprint written by Ulysses Prentiss Hedrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grapes of New York Flora, in the Evolution of our Native Fruits. And in the Cyclopedia of American Horticulture, was adopted. The Grapes of New York makes its chief contribution to the pomology Of the country in the description of varieties. The authors have tried to study varieties from every point of view, not alone nor chiefly, it must be said, with regard to their cultural value; for most of the varieties pass out Of cultivation and such information would be worthless within a few years at most. But, rather, the effort has been to determine what elementary or unit characters the grape possesses as shown in its botanical and horti cultural groups. The Twentieth Century begins with the unanimous judg ment Of scientists that the characters of plants are independent entities which are thrown into various relationships with each other in individuals and groups of individuals. This conception of unit characters lies at the foundation Of plant improvement. We are but beginning the breeding of American grapes and it has seemed to the writer that the most important part of this undertaking is to discover and record as far as possible these unit characters of grapes, thereby aiding to furnish a foundation for grape breeding. The great problem Of plant-breeding in the future will be to correlate the characters known to exist in the plant being improved; we must know what these are before we begin to combine and rearrange them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gramercy Park: A Story of New York Jack De Ford wandered along the sunny side of Irving Place, northward, until he found him-self presently in the maze of Gramerey Park. He was quite early, this bright May morning, and, as he was not required to be at his office before half-past nine, he had determined to take the elevated at Twenty-third, instead of Fourteenth Street, as was his wont. The high iron fence around the pretty square, and the apparent absence of any entrance or gateway, gave the solitary couple whom he saw walking within the enclosure the air of prisoners. He stood a moment gazing absently at the white, pretty fountain in the centre, which gave forth a pleasant musical sound. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The owner of a haunted country inn contends with death, fatherhood, romantic woes, and alcoholism in this humorous and “rattling good ghost story” from a Booker Prize–winning author (The New York Times) Maurice Allington has reached middle age and is haunted by death. As he says, “I honestly can’t see why everybody who isn’t a child, everybody who’s theoretically old enough to have understood what death means, doesn’t spend all his time thinking about it. It’s a pretty arresting thought.” He also happens to own and run a country inn that is haunted. The Green Man opens as Maurice’s father drops dead (had he seen something in the room?) and continues as friends and family convene for the funeral. Maurice’s problems are many and increasing: How to deal with his own declining health? How to reach out to a teenage daughter who watches TV all the time? How to get his best friend’s wife in the sack? How to find another drink? (And another.) And then there is always death. The Green Man is a ghost story that hits a live nerve, a very black comedy with an uncannily happy ending: in other words, Kingsley Amis at his best.

Book The Dances of Shakespeare

Download or read book The Dances of Shakespeare written by Jim Hoskins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2005. Dances of Shakespeare gives a brief introduction to how to perform all of the dance styles featured in Shakespeare's plays. Designed for the practicing director, actor, or choreographer, it gives clear instruction on how to perform popular dances of Shakespeare's day, including masques, brawls, canaries, corantos, galliards, jigs, La Volta, pavans, morris dances, and roundels. Accompanied by clear illustrations, these instructions allow even the dance-challenged to quickly master enough technique to suit amateur, community, college, or semi-professional productions. Other useful features include a chronological listing of popular dances similar in spirit to those of Shakespeare's days, designed for those staging Shakespeare's work in periods other than as written, as well as an appendix list of the plays grouped by what is called for in the text: a "dance," a "masque," or a specific dance form. Dances of Shakespeare is a "must have" for all student directors and performers interested in staging Shakespeare's works.

Book Bilingual Public Schooling in the United States

Download or read book Bilingual Public Schooling in the United States written by P. Ramsey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of one of the most contentious educational issues in America examines bilingual instruction in the United States from the common school era to the recent federal involvement in the 1960s and 1970s. Drawing from school reports, student narratives, legal resources, policy documents, and other primary sources, the work teases out the underlying agendas and patterns in bilingual schooling during much of America s history. The study demonstrates clearly how the broader context - the cultural, intellectual, religious, demographic, economic, and political forces - shaped the contours of dual-language instruction in America between the 1840s and 1960s. Ramsey s work fills a crucial void in the educational literature and addresses not only historians, linguists, and bilingual scholars, but also policymakers and practitioners in the field.
