Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Modern Chinese fiction . . . looks to have made a great leap towards the bookshelves of [Western] readers."—Guardian Hugely popular in China, flash fiction is poised to be the most exciting new development in contemporary Chinese literature in a decade. Integrating both vernacular and contemporary styles while embracing new technologies such as text messaging (SMS) and blogging, contemporary Chinese flash fiction represents the voice of a civilization at the brink of a startling and unprecedented transformation. This collection features 120 short-short stories (from 100 to 300 words each), written by some of China's most dynamic and versatile authors. Dong Rui's The Pearl Jacket offers a glimpse of the real and surreal in human evolution, Chen Qiyou's Butterfly Forever brings an ancient Chinese literary motif into a startling modern context, while Liu Jianchao's Concerned Departments mocks the staggering complexity of life in the new urban China. Traditional, experimental, and avant-garde, The Pearl Jacket and Other Stories will reinvigorate the position of young Chinese writers as a major presence in contemporary literature. Their voices breathe new energy into modern Chinese literature, leaving the literary and societal stagnation of the Cultural Revolution behind as a distant memory. Shouhua Qi is an associate professor of English at Western Connecticut State University. He is the author of Red Guard Fantasies and Other Stories and When the Purple Mountain Burns. He is one of the foremost experts (and translators) of the novels of Thomas Hardy.

Book Flash Fiction International Very Short Stories from Around the World

Download or read book Flash Fiction International Very Short Stories from Around the World written by James Thomas and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dazzling new anthology of the very best very short fiction from around the world. What is a flash fiction called in other countries? In Latin America it is a micro, in Denmark kortprosa, in Bulgaria mikro razkaz. These short shorts, usually no more than 750 words, range from linear narratives to the more unusual: stories based on mathematical forms, a paragraph-length novel, a scientific report on volcanic fireflies that proliferate in nightclubs. Flash has always—and everywhere—been a form of experiment, of possibility. A new entry in the lauded Flash and Sudden Fiction anthologies, this collection includes 86 of the most beautiful, provocative, and moving narratives by authors from six continents, including best-selling writer Etgar Keret, Zimbabwean writer Petina Gappah, Korean screenwriter Kim Young-ha, Nobel Prize winner Czeslaw Milosz, and Argentinian “Queen of the Microstory” Ana María Shua, among many others. These brilliantly chosen stories challenge readers to widen their vision and celebrate both the local and the universal.

Download or read book Fado and Other Stories written by Katherine Vaz and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 1997-10-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1997 Drue Heinz Literature Prize This collection is filled with narrative and character grounded in the meaning and value the earth gives to human existence. In one story, a woman sleeps with the village priest, trying to gain back the land the church took from her family; in another, relatives in the Azores fight over a plot of land owned by their expatriate American cousin. Even apparently small images are cast in terms of the earth: Milton, one narrator explains, has made apples the object of a misunderstanding by naming them as Eden’s fruit: “In the Bible, no fruit is named in the Garden of Eden - and to this day apples are misunderstood. They were trying to tempt people not into sin but into listening to the earth more closely. . . . their white meal runs wet with the knowledge of the language of the land, but people do not listen.” Vaz’s beautiful, intensely conscious language often delicately slips her stories into the realm of the fado, the Portuguese song about fate and longing. “Listen for the nightingale that presses its breast against the thorns of the rose,” on character sings, “that the song might be more beautiful.” Such a verse might describe Vaz’s own motive behind her willingness to confront her subject’s ambiguities and her characters’ conflicts - the simultaneous joy and sorrow of some of life’s discoveries, the pain sometimes hidden within passion and pleasure.

Book Reconfiguring Class Gender Ethnicity and Ethics in Chinese Internet Culture

Download or read book Reconfiguring Class Gender Ethnicity and Ethics in Chinese Internet Culture written by Haomin Gong and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New information technologies have, to an unprecedented degree, come to reshape human relations, identities and communities both online and offline. As Internet narratives including online fiction, poetry and films reflect and represent ambivalent politics in China, the Chinese state wishes to enable the formidable soft power of this new medium whilst at the same time handling the ideological uncertainties it inevitably entails. This book investigates the ways in which class, gender, ethnicity and ethics are reconfigured, complicated and enriched by the closely intertwined online and offline realities in China. It combs through a wide range of theories on Internet culture, intellectual history, and literary, film, and cultural studies, and explores a variety of online cultural materials, including digitized spoofing, microblog fictions, micro-films, online fictions, web dramas, photographs, flash mobs, popular literature and films. These materials have played an important role in shaping the contemporary cultural scene, but have so far received little critical attention. Here, the authors demonstrate how Chinese Internet culture has provided a means to intervene in the otherwise monolithic narratives of identity and community. Offering an important contribution to the rapidly growing field of Internet studies, this book will also be of interest to students and scholars of Chinese culture, literary and film studies, media and communication studies, and Chinese society.

Book China Complex

Download or read book China Complex written by Shouhua Qi and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-10-29 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, the United States and China have been partners in an occasionally graceful but often awkward cultural-political tango. In this insightful narrative, Shouhua Qi, part of a new generation of scholars whose life experiences in China and the West serve as the basis for an acute analysis of cross-cultural perceptions, weaves literary and cultural criticism together with journeys across time, politics, and popular culture. Part memoir, Qi reveals the China complex as a manifestation of the search for meaning at many levels; personal, national, and global. With the future of the U.S. and China so intertwined now more than ever before, Qi's cogent assessment of the interpersonal foundations of the US-China relationship in the twenty-first century is a must-read.
