Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan in the British Museum preserves one of the most extensive collections outside Egypt of funerary papyri, among which the greatest number bear texts from the repertory known to the ancient Egyptians as the Formulae for Going Forth by Day, and to modern scholarship as the Book of the Dead. These texts to secure eternal life for individual persons are first found written on papyri of the mid-Eighteenth Dynasty, c.1450 BC, and the tradition survived until the first century BC, the beginning of the Roman period in Egypt. Several of the finest manuscripts were published in facsimile in the last century, but these editions are rarely available; with the present volume the Museum is continuing the publication of this important category of manuscript, rich in information on religious texts and iconography as well as in the history of manuscript production. The third volume in the series publishes the papyrus of Nebseni, an Eighteenth Dynasty copyist from the Temple of Ptah at Memphis. The manuscript is presented here in its original form with full photographic reproductions. These are accompanied by an introduction by Guenther Lapp on the identity of the owner and the reasons for the selection and order of the particular texts included.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Egyptian Book of the Dead

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Egyptian Book of the Dead written by Rita Lucarelli and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Among the broad spectrum of ancient Egyptian religious literature, the Book of the Dead is the most representative of the mortuary religion and of the magical and ritual practices belonging to it. Moreover, its rich corpus of texts and images provides unique information on the scribal practices, mortuary traditions, myths, and priestly rituals in ancient Egypt from the 2nd Millennium BCE to the Roman Period. "Book of the Dead" is the conventional name given by Egyptologists to a collection of magical compositions called in ancient Egyptian "Book for coming forth by day". This title refers to the main wish of the deceased, who wished to be able to leave his tomb and move freely between this world and the next. Each Book of the Dead manuscript is unique, although we know of the existence of workshops where the papyri were bought and therefore a few common stylistic features can be recognized according to different regional traditions of writing and manufacture. The spells also present many and various parallels with other magical and ritual texts attested in temples, on magical objects, and amulets, showing that the mortuary literature had in fact a strong link with the daily religious life and beliefs of the ancient Egyptians. This Handbook is the first guide to all the aspects and topics of research both in relation to the Book of the Dead itself and to broader research on ancient Egyptian religion and magic"--

Book Text and Ritual in the Pentateuch

Download or read book Text and Ritual in the Pentateuch written by Christophe Nihan and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first five books of the Hebrew Bible contain a significant number of texts describing ritual practices. Yet it is often unclear how these sources would have been understood or used by ancient audiences in the actual performance of cult. This volume explores the processes of ritual textualization (the creation of a written version of a ritual) in ancient Israel by probing the main conceptual and methodological issues that inform the study of this topic in the Pentateuch. This systematic and comparative study of text and ritual in the first five books of the Hebrew Bible maps the main areas of consensus and disagreement among scholars engaged in articulating new models for understanding the relationship between text and ritual and explores the importance of comparative evidence for the study of pentateuchal rituals. Topics include ritual textualization in ancient Anatolia, Egypt, Greece, and Mesopotamia; the importance of archaeology and materiality for the study of text and ritual in ancient Israel; the relationship between ritual textualization and standardization in the Pentateuch; the reception of pentateuchal ritual texts in Second Temple writings and rabbinic literature; and the relationship between text and ritual in the Dead Sea Scrolls. In addition to the editors, the contributors to this volume include Dorothea Erbele-Küster, Daniel K. Falk, Yitzhaq Feder, Christian Frevel, William K. Gilders, Dominique Jaillard, Giuseppina Lenzo, Lionel Marti, Patrick Michel, Rüdiger Schmitt, Jeremy D. Smoak, and James W. Watts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Egyptian toponym Naref and the god Osiris Naref have hitherto been the subject of brief discussions. This study gathers for the first time all data available on these issues, revises traditionally accepted ideas, and offers integral interpretations — contextualizing them in the local milieu. The book aims to approach the funerary, legal, and royal mythological associations developed around Naref (an important landmark of the Herakleopolitan territory), attested for the first time in the so-called Coffin Texts and enduring until the Roman Period. It also seeks to analyse the characteristics of Osiris Naref, a prominent deity in the Herakleopolitan pantheon from the New Kingdom onwards who achieved suprarregional importance. His key features — centred on the mythical episodes of rebirth and defeat of enemies, justification, and assumption of royal power — gave rise to an Osirian form "who cannot/will not be evicted" from the legitimate and secluded place he has reached. Both aspects are analysed within the wider context of regional (religious, historical, landscape) characteristics. This monograph offers valuable insights into the study of both local mythical and cultic toponyms and of regional manifestations of Osiris.

Book Glorification Spells from a Priestly Milieu in Ancient Egypt

Download or read book Glorification Spells from a Priestly Milieu in Ancient Egypt written by Ann-Katrin Gill and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-05 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glorification Spells from a Priestly Milieu in Ancient Egypt presents the first comprehensive edition of an ancient Egyptian ritual composition entitled the Glorification Recited on Each Due Occasion of the Embalming Place, a collection of glorification spells attested in five papyri from around 300 BCE. Arguably the most significant extensive ancient Egyptian ritual text still awaiting systematic study, its constituent spells preserve and transmit religious ideas which resonated with the ancient Egyptians for millennia. The collection and adaptation of these spells into a single coherent ritual work bear witness to the remarkable creativity of the priests and scribes of the latest periods of Egyptian history. Much of this process may be attributable to members of a single family or a small circle of colleagues living in a particular place during a circumscribed period of time, highlighting the importance of individual or small-group agency, not only in preserving and transmitting religious traditions, but in transforming them as well. Glorification spells were recited in the embalming place and elsewhere. They were intended, not only to revivify those to whom they were addressed, restoring their mental and physical faculties, but to secure their elevation to a new, exalted status, that of an akh, or glorified spirit, as well. This status integrated the beneficiary within the hierarchy of gods and other glorified spirits in the next world. This volume places the Glorification Recited on Each Due Occasion of the Embalming Place in its wider historical, religious, and sociological context. It includes a hieroglyphic synopsis of all known examples of the spells, and a transliteration and translation of the copy of them preserved in P. Louvre N. 3129, the type version. In a line-by-line commentary, variant readings in the parallels are recorded and salient points of interest, whether grammatical, lexicographical, historical, topographical, or theological, are discussed. An extensive glossary, a general bibliography, an index, and photographic reproductions are provided, alongside hieroglyphic transcriptions of the papyri.
