Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Christopher Sykes has written the authoritative work on the Palestine Mandate... His account is almost unbearably fair to all concerned, even to Britain... a very excellent book. Mr. Sykes steers his way through the reigns of successive High Commissioners and through the maze of White Papers and Royal Commissions with amazing virtuosity. We see the whole picture of the Mandate in a way which was impossible to those at the time.” — International Affairs “Mr. Sykes (son of Mark Sykes, co-author of the Sykes-Picot Agreement) has written an illuminating, highly-informed and balanced study of the development of the Zionist movement into the State of Israel. By virtue of his acquaintance with many of the leading persons involved, Mr. Sykes has had access to a considerable amount of unpublished material upon which he has drawn heavily to clarify much that was previously obscure about events in the unhappy Holy Land. He also writes with an easy, lucid style so that apart from the book’s intrinsic merit it is immensely readable.” — International Journal “One of the many merits of Mr Sykes’s wholly meritorious book is that he is not anchored in time or prejudice.” — Middle Eastern Studies

Book The Middle East

  • Author : Willard A. Beling
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 1976-06-30
  • ISBN : 079149621X
  • Pages : 374 pages

Download or read book The Middle East written by Willard A. Beling and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1976-06-30 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many respects this book represents a considerable departure from traditional works on international relations in the Middle East. Instead of offering partial explanations based on conventional approaches, this book attempts to incorporate studies with different methodological approaches and with the Middle East. Foreign affairs specialists offer balanced and linguistically neutral commentaries, while marshalling empirical data to support their analyses. The result is a broad synthesis which helps the reader see the larger picture despite its complexity. The Middle East is considered as a subordinate system of the international political system in Part 1. The chapters in this section focus on the nations of the area and their interactions within the subsystem. The papers also examine the implications of these interactions to the nations outside the Middle East. In Part 2 the scope of inquiry is enlarged to treat interactions between the major world powers and the nations of the Middle East. Papers in Part 3 focus upon American foreign policy in the Middle East. This portion examines the roles of various special-interest groups such as the oil companies, Zionists, the United States Congress, newspapers, and religious bodies as they relate to the formation of American policy for the Middle East. In essence, The Middle East is an "international relations" study of the Middle East. Additionally, it has new material—the treatment of religious influences upon the Middle East, the attitudes of some major newspapers towards the middle East conflict, and the domestic position of Israel regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict—seldom discussed in other works.

Book Armed Struggle and the Search for State

Download or read book Armed Struggle and the Search for State written by Yezid Sayigh and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997-12-11 with total page 998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This masterly new work spans an entire epoch in the history of the contemporary Palestinian national movement, from the establishment of Israel in mandate Palestine in 1948, to the PLO-Israel accord of 1993. Contrary to the conventional view that national liberation movements proceed with state-building only after attaining independence, the case of the PLO shows that state-building may shape political institutionalization throughout the previous struggle, even in the absence of anautonomous territorial, economic, and social base. That is the central argument of this insightful study, which traces the political, ideological, and organizational evolution of the PLO and its constituent guerrilla groups. Taking the much-vaunted 'armed struggle' as its connecting theme, itshows how conflict was used to mobilize the mass constituency, assert particular discourses of revolution and nationalism, construct statist institutions, and establish the legitimacy of a new political class and bureaucratic elite. The book draws extensively on PLO archives, official publications and internal documents of the various guerilla groups, and over 400 interviews conducted by the author with the PLO rank-and-file. Its span, primary sources, and conceptual framework make thisthe definitive work on the subject.

Book Tired of Being a Refugee

Download or read book Tired of Being a Refugee written by Fiorella Larissa Erni and published by . This book was released on 2013-01-24 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After six decades of protracted refugeehood, patterns of social identification are changing among the young people of the fourth refugee generation in the Palestinian refugee camp Burj al-Shamali in Southern Lebanon. Though their identity as Palestinian refugees remains the same compared to older refugee generations, there is an important shift in the young refugees’ relationship towards the homeland, their status as refugees, Islam, the camp society, as well as in their relationship towards religious or ethnic “others” in and outside Lebanon. This ePaper examines how technology, globalisation and outside influences have impacted the young Palestinians’ interpretation of their identity and their understanding of Palestinianness. The author concludes with reflections on the young refugees’ attitudes towards their Palestinian identity in the diaspora, which, as she argues, can only survive when the young refugees see their identity as a virtue rather than as a hindrance.
