Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was designed to introduce the intellectual heritage of Korean Buddhism to all over the world by selecting representative works of Korean Buddhist tradition in various fields and publishing them in English. For a six-year period from 2018 to 2023, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism supervised the project with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and has been publishing ten representative Buddhist works in English. Buddhism has been the central axis of Korean culture and thought for thousands of years, and has exerted considerable influence to the present. Buddhism, which originated in India and settled here in Korea via China, maintains both local particularity and global universality. Various works on philosophy, history and culture of Korean Buddhism need to be published to introduce the originality and excellence of Korean Buddhism to the world. The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism previously published The Collected Works of Modern Korean Buddhism(2017): English translations of carefully selected Korean Buddhist works as part of the Globalization Project of Korean Buddhism. Succeeding and further developing upon the previous undertaking, this project aims to inform the world of Korean Buddhism, which not only served as an indispensable spiritual asset for Korean people but also provided them with the locus of universal discourse. The ultimate goal of this project is to expand the worldwide base for Korean studies, promote the globalization of Korean Buddhism, and improve the “brand equity” of Korean tradition.
Download or read book From Eternity to Eternity written by Bulpil Sunim, and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2024-12-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Eternity to Eternity is the story of Bulpil Sunim, arguably the most respected female Seon (Zen) master in Korea. Written with candor and an unpretentious sense of humor, her memoir provides both a fascinating record of her life and a deeply accessible window into Buddhist thought and spirituality. Describing and reflecting on her own experience of meditation and her journey as a woman in a male-dominated religious practice, she reveals the largely unknown realities of female monastic life in Korea. She also provides an unprecedented glimpse into her relationship with her father, the legendary Seon Master Seongcheol Sunim, who was widely considered a living Buddha in Korea. This lyrical autobiography, the first of its kind in Korean Buddhist literature, offers readers a chance to learn about Korean Seon meditation and practice from a woman’s perspective and will be of interest not only to scholars of Buddhism but to general readers curious about Buddhism, the experiences of religious women, or simply the remarkable life of a great spiritual leader.

Download or read book The Orthodox Path of Seon written by Toeong Seongcheol and published by Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a translation of the book that records Seongcheol’s 性徹 (1912–1993) sermons to audience with his explanations. Seongcheol was one of the most renowned Seon monks in modern Korea, who also served as the supreme patriarch of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. He tried to recover the tradition of Korean Seon practice by organizing a Buddhist society at Bongamsa in 1947. He became the first head-monk (bangjang) of Haeinsa Monastery in 1967 and preached the dharma sermon for a hundred days (baegil beommun). He left many works, including the Han’guk Bulgyo ui beommaek (Dharma Lineages of Korean Buddhism, 1976) and the Bonji punggwang (Scenery of the Original Ground, 1982). This translation used the Seongcheol Seunim pyeongseok Seonmun jeongno (Seonmun jeongno with Seongcheol’s Annotation, 2015), consulting with the Jeongdok Seonmun jeongno (Perusal of Seonmun jeongno, 2022). The Seonmun jeongno 禪門正路 is a record of sermons that discuss the sudden awakening and hwadu investigation in Seon. It consists of nineteen chapters: (1) “To See Your Own Nature Is to Become a Buddha”; (2) “Sentient Beings Have Buddha Nature”; (3) “Two Types of Afflictions and False Thoughts”; (4) “Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment”; (5) “Realizing the Truth that All Dharmas Are Unborn”; (6) “No Thought Is the True Tenet”; (7) “Protecting No Mind”; (8) “Awake or Asleep, Being Consistent”; (9) “Gaining Life in Death”; (10) “Great Perfect Mirror-Like Wisdom”; (11) “Inside and Outside Are Brilliantly Clear”; (12) “Constantly Serene and Constantly Illuminating”; (13) “Discursive Awakening Followed by Gradual Cultivation”; (14) “Partial Penetration and Partial Attainment”; (15) “With Erudition There Is Only Discursive Knowledge”; (16) “Abrupt Exhaustion of All Contaminants”; (17) “A Clear-Eyed Patriarchal Master”; (18) “Mysteries and Essentials, Real and Provisional”; (19) “Eliminating the Seed of Buddhahood.” In this book, Seongcheol criticizes Bojo Jinul’s sudden awakening-gradual cultivation and insists the sudden awakening–sudden cultivation, which later triggered the intense debate of sudden and gradual in Korea.

Download or read book The Keys to the Temple written by David Furlong and published by Piatkus Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mysteries and myths of ancient sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Mayan temples of Central America, Stonehenge, Avebury, Glastonbury hold a perennial fascination for us all. Who built them, how, and for what purpose, are endlessly debated. David Furlong's 25 years of research form an important breakthrough in our understanding, provide amazing new concepts and information, and reveal an astonishing picture of our past. The Keys to the Temple presents startling new evidence about the history of mankind. After years of research David Furlong has discovered extraordinary patterns of alignments in the British landscape which link ancient sites and -- incredibly -- give a blueprint of the same geometric patterning found in the Great Pyramid in Egypt. These detailed calculations prove beyond doubt that a society with highly sophisticated astronomical, mathematical, and surveying knowledge was living in Britain and Northern Europe, 3000 years before Christ and creating highly complex "temples in the landscape". These events correspond exactly with the start of dynastic Egypt, the building of the pyramids, and the beginning of the famed Mayan Calendar. Who were these masterbuilders? Where did they come from? What roots did they share with the masterbuilders of Egypt and South America. What message did they hope to conceal in the landscape? This book is not only a carefully researched detective story but also a book that has implications for our very future.
Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Zen Buddhism written by Charles S. Prebish and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together an impressive group of scholars to critically engage with a wide-ranging and broad perspective on the historical and contemporary phenomenon of Zen. The structure of the work is organized to reflect the root and branches of Zen, with the root referring to important episodes in Chan/Zen history within the Asian context, and the branches referring to more recent development in the West. In collating what has transpired in the last several decades of Chan/Zen scholarship, the collection recognizes and honors the scholarly accomplishments and influences of Steven Heine, arguably the most important Zen scholar in the past three decades. As it looks back at the intellectual horizons that this towering figure in Zen/Chan studies has pioneered and developed, it seeks to build on the grounds that were broken and subsequently established by Heine, thereby engendering new works within this enormously important religio-cultural scholarly tradition. This curated Festschrift is a tribute, both retrospective and prospective, acknowledging the foundational work that Heine has forged, and generates research that is both complementary and highly original. This academic ritual of assembling a liber amicorum is based on the presumption that sterling scholarship should be honored by conscientious scholarship. In the festive spirit of a Festschrift, this anthology consists of the resounding voices of Heine and his colleagues. It is an indispensable collection for students and scholars interested in Japanese religion and Chinese culture, and for those researching Zen Buddhist history and philosophy.

Download or read book No River to Cross written by Daehaeng and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often said that enlightenment means "crossing over to the other shore," that far-off place where we can at last be free from suffering. Likewise, it is said that Buddhist teachings are the raft that takes us there. In this sparkling collection from one of the most vital teachers of modern Korean Buddhism, Zen Master Daehaeng shows us that there is no raft to find and, truly, no river to cross. She extends her hand to the Western reader, beckoning each of us into the unfailing wisdom accessible right now, the enlightenment that is always, already, right here. A Zen (or seon, as Korean Zen is called) master with impeccable credentials, Daehaeng has developed a refreshing approach; No River to Cross is surprisingly personal. It's disarmingly simple, yet remarkably profound, pointing us again and again to our foundation, our "True Nature" - the perfection of things just as they are.
