Book The Gig Economy

Download or read book The Gig Economy written by Brian Dolber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection examines the gig economy in the age of convergence from a critical political economic perspective. Contributions explore how media, technology, and labor are converging to create new modes of production, as well as new modes of resistance. From rideshare drivers in Los Angeles to domestic workers in Delhi, from sex work to podcasting, this book draws together research that examines the gig economy's exploitation of workers and their resistance. Employing critical theoretical perspectives and methodologies in a variety of national contexts, contributors consider the roles that media, policy, culture, and history, as well as gender, race, and ethnicity play in forging working conditions in the 'gig economy'. Contributors examine the complex and historical relationships between media and gig work integral to capitalism with the aim of exposing and, ultimately, ending exploitation. This book will appeal to students and scholars examining questions of technology, media, and labor across media and communication studies, information studies, and labor studies as well as activists, journalists, and policymakers.

Book The Eye of the Master

Download or read book The Eye of the Master written by Matteo Pasquinelli and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A social history of AI that finally reveals its roots in the spatial computation of industrial factories and the surveillance of collective behaviour. What is AI? A dominant view describes it as the quest "to solve intelligence," a solution supposedly to be found in the secret logic of the mind or in the deep physiology of the brain, such as in its complex neural networks. The Eye of the Master argues, to the contrary, that the inner code of AI is shaped not by the imitation of biological intelligence, but the intelligence of labour and social relations, as it is found in Babbage's "calculating engines" of the industrial age as well as in the recent algorithms for image recognition and surveillance. The idea that AI may one day become autonomous (or "sentient", as someone thought of Google's LaMDA) is pure fantasy. Computer algorithms have always imitated the form of social relations and the organisation of labour in their own inner structure and their purpose remains blind automation. The Eye of the Master urges a new literacy on AI for scientists, journalists and new generations of activists, who should recognise that the "mystery" of AI is just the automation of labour at the highest degree, not intelligence per se.

Book Good Jobs Bad Jobs

Download or read book Good Jobs Bad Jobs written by Arne L. Kalleberg and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic boom of the 1990s veiled a grim reality: in addition to the growing gap between rich and poor, the gap between good and bad quality jobs was also expanding. The postwar prosperity of the mid-twentieth century had enabled millions of American workers to join the middle class, but as author Arne L. Kalleberg shows, by the 1970s this upward movement had slowed, in part due to the steady disappearance of secure, well-paying industrial jobs. Ever since, precarious employment has been on the rise—paying low wages, offering few benefits, and with virtually no long-term security. Today, the polarization between workers with higher skill levels and those with low skills and low wages is more entrenched than ever. Good Jobs, Bad Jobs traces this trend to large-scale transformations in the American labor market and the changing demographics of low-wage workers. Kalleberg draws on nearly four decades of survey data, as well as his own research, to evaluate trends in U.S. job quality and suggest ways to improve American labor market practices and social policies. Good Jobs, Bad Jobs provides an insightful analysis of how and why precarious employment is gaining ground in the labor market and the role these developments have played in the decline of the middle class. Kalleberg shows that by the 1970s, government deregulation, global competition, and the rise of the service sector gained traction, while institutional protections for workers—such as unions and minimum-wage legislation—weakened. Together, these forces marked the end of postwar security for American workers. The composition of the labor force also changed significantly; the number of dual-earner families increased, as did the share of the workforce comprised of women, non-white, and immigrant workers. Of these groups, blacks, Latinos, and immigrants remain concentrated in the most precarious and low-quality jobs, with educational attainment being the leading indicator of who will earn the highest wages and experience the most job security and highest levels of autonomy and control over their jobs and schedules. Kalleberg demonstrates, however, that building a better safety net—increasing government responsibility for worker health care and retirement, as well as strengthening unions—can go a long way toward redressing the effects of today’s volatile labor market. There is every reason to expect that the growth of precarious jobs—which already make up a significant share of the American job market—will continue. Good Jobs, Bad Jobs deftly shows that the decline in U.S. job quality is not the result of fluctuations in the business cycle, but rather the result of economic restructuring and the disappearance of institutional protections for workers. Only government, employers and labor working together on long-term strategies—including an expanded safety net, strengthened legal protections, and better training opportunities—can help reverse this trend. A Volume in the American Sociological Association’s Rose Series in Sociology.

Book How to Make Money Online With Fiverr

Download or read book How to Make Money Online With Fiverr written by Bri and published by Bri. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many financially smart individuals, having an alternative and multiple streams of income is non-negotiable. Making money online is one of such avenue that has the widest appeal for students, stay-at-home moms, work-at-home addicts, semi-retired workers and even the bed-ridden. One of the latest trends in the online job market scene is the micro job. A micro-job is any temporary, small task, freelance job that targets independent contractors for minimal pay. These jobs might include crowdsourcing projects and online or even real world tasks. There are no long-term commitments for a micro job and tasks can be completed within a few hours or days. Despite the allure of online freelance jobs, they might not replace income from a full-time job. However, it is an excellent medium for you to market your skills thereby increasing your chances of meeting long-term, high-paying clients. In addition, for those rare individuals who wish to stay on top of their game, Fiverr presents also an excellent opportunity to hone your skills in the process. So, let's get started!

Book Isolated with Friends Online Communities in the Gig Economy

Download or read book Isolated with Friends Online Communities in the Gig Economy written by Elise P. Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper explores gig economy workers’ virtual community formation through social support seeking practices. I employ uses and gratifications theory and social information processing theory to analyze workers’ online support seeking and community forming processes. The research shows that gig economy employers provide limited instrumental and socioemotional support, which promotes workers’ feelings of isolation and thus online support seeking behaviors. As a result, as workers become integrated into virtual communities, they form personal relationships with their colleagues. I conclude by suggesting policy solutions to the problem of gig economy workers’ isolation, both in terms of changes that companies can enact, and those that local, state, and federal entities can legislate. Finally, I discuss future research opportunities to better understand gig economy workers’ online community formation processes."--
