Book excerpt: The field of Molecular Oncology has emerged in the last decade as an amalgamation of four of the foremost disciplines in cancer research: retrovirology, chemical carcinogenesis, cytogenetics, and cell growth regulation. The subject matter for this book forms the unifying factor for these four areas. Although the field of Molecular Oncology is still comparatively young, the technical vocabulary can be bewildering to the uninitiated. This book is clear in its divisions, grouping oncogenes by biochemical activity or cellular localization; the large group of tyrosine kinases are compared by relevant features. The Oncogene Handbook allows ready access and supplies excellent cross-referencing. An outstanding reference work, giving basic information on each oncogene in a concise and uniform format. The fundamental importance of the subject area and its medical implications, both reflected in The Oncogene Handbook, provide students, scientists in other fields, and clinicians with a very useful manual.

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book Mechanisms in B Cell Neoplasia 1990

Download or read book Mechanisms in B Cell Neoplasia 1990 written by Michael Potter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighth workshop in this series on Mechanisms in B-Cell Neoplasia 1990 was held in Wilson Hall at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland on March 28-30. Five major topics formed the basis for the discussions: 1) progress in experimental models of B-cell tumorigenesis, 2) the role of IL-6 in plasma cell tumor formation with particular emphasis on human myeloma, 3) immortaliza tion and regulation of mitosis in B-cells, 4) the mYQ gene in B-cell neoplasia, and 5) the role of EBV and other oncogenes in transforma tion of human B-Iymphocytes. A meeting on the Epidemiology of Myeloma was held at the N. I. H. on the preceding day, and many of those interested in the clinical aspects of myeloma were also participants at the workshop. Experimental Models of B-Cell Tumor Development We have seen in the last eight years the steady growth of model experimental systems, many of which have been designed to be counter parts of the major forms of human B cell tumors, e. g. , follicular lymphomas, Burkitt's lymphomas, acute B-cell leukemia and multiple myeloma. A variety of novel ways of inducing these tumors has been described. Advantage has been taken of the "experiments in nature" to identify critical genes that playa role in tumor pathogenesis. These genes have been identified by being near to viral insertion and chromosomal translocation sites, or by having been incorporated or transduced into a defective transforming retrovirus.

Book Osteosarcoma in Adolescents and Young Adults New Developments and Controversies

Download or read book Osteosarcoma in Adolescents and Young Adults New Developments and Controversies written by G. Bennett Humphrey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osteosarcoma in Adolescents and Young Adults: New Developments and Controversies is the fifth volume in the series `Cancer Treatment, and Research' devoted to pediatric oncology. Like its immediate predecessor, Hodgkin's Disease in Children: Controversies and Current Practice, this volume also deals with the current state of affairs: where do researchers differ in opinions or firmly held beliefs? What does the future hold for research or for the patients who have benefited from research and are now cured? etc. The first part deals with preclinical and clinical issues that relate to the disease and the second part deals with the results of recent trials and in some cases ongoing trials. It could be argued that section B Pharmacology, Section D Radiotherapy and Section E Surgery of part one belong to part two; however in these sections we have tried to focus on one discipline and in part two, we have tried to focus on the results of multidisciplinary trials. A third part includes a few critiques and editorial comments. This volume was prepared and planned for both basic and clinical oncologists. It is hoped that the basic scientists will gain some insight into the problems of their clinical colleagues and that the clinicians will be willing to read to the more basic articles. It is not a text for students (or for that matter physicians) who want all things to be laid out in `black and white'. But it is a text for those students who want to know how vibrant this field of research is and are willing to stand in awe of how much research needs to be done.

  • ISBN : 146124076X
  • Pages : 748 pages

Download or read book Chemical Induction of Cancer written by Joseph C. Arcos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the approach to the analysis of disease, including, of course, cancer, two major thrusts may be distinguished. These may be referred to, in shorthand, as agents and processes: the causative agents (chemical, microbial, physical, environmental, and psychosocial) and the organismic processes, initiated and furthered by the agents, culminating in observable pathology (at the macromolecular, cytological, histological, organ function, locomotor, and behavioral levels). The past 25 years, since the appearance of the first volume of the predecessor series (1) authored by the Editors of this present volume, have seen an impressive number of studies on chemicals (and other agents) as etiologic factors in the induction of cancer. The major emphasis has been on the discovery of many chemical carcinogens of widely different structures, their metabolism by various tissues and cells, and, in turn, their molecular-biochemical effects on the cells. This rapidly expanded body of information, as effectively covered in the predecessor volumes, is an excellent entree to the second half of the overall problem of chemical carcinogenesis, the processes. The active agents trigger a large array of molecular-biochemical alterations to which the target cells, target tissues, and target organisms respond in many select and common ways. This second major aspect of the induction of cancer by chemicals (and by other agents)- the sequence of cellular and tissue changes clearly relevant to cancer-remains the challenge for the future.
