Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dan Brown fans will want to check this one out" (Publishers Weekly): The Ghent Altarpiece is the most violated work of art in the world. Thirteen times it has been vandalized, dismantled, or stolen. Why? What secrets does it hold? Enter UNESCO investigator, Nicholas Lee, who works for the United Nations’ Cultural Liaison and Investigative Office (CLIO). Nick’s job is to protect the world’s cultural artifacts—anything and everything from countless lesser-known objects to national treasures. When Nick travels to Belgium for a visit with a woman from his past, he unwittingly stumbles on the trail of a legendary panel from the Ghent Altarpiece, stolen in 1934 under cover of night and never seen since. Soon Nick is plunged into a bitter conflict, one that has been simmering for nearly two thousand years. On one side is the Maidens of Saint-Michael, les Vautours—the Vultures—a secret order of nuns and the guardians of a great truth. Pitted against them is the Vatican, which has wanted for centuries to both find and possess what the nuns guard. Because of Nick the maidens have finally been exposed, their secret placed in dire jeopardy—a vulnerability that the Vatican swiftly moves to exploit utilizing an ambitious cardinal and a corrupt archbishop, both with agendas of their own. From the tranquil canals of Ghent, to the towering bastions of Carcassonne, and finally into an ancient abbey high in the French Pyrenees, Nick Lee must confront a modern-day religious crusade intent on eliminating a shocking truth from humanity’s past. Success or failure—life and death—all turn on the Omega Factor.

It also features peer-reviewed evidence from clinical trials on these topics. The book gives cutting-edge information from state-of-the-art developments such as the test that can be done to measure the omega-3 status of one’s own tissues, the “Omega-3 Index”, which can give many years of early warning so that one can take preventive steps and decrease the odds of a heart attack, stroke or kidney disease. It explains why a Mediterranean diet plan rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is protective, and it features a six-day meal plan with recipes that will improve body levels of omega-3s. This book helps readers understand the differences between various sources of omega-3 fatty acids, namely flaxseed vs fish oil vs algae-derived oils. Features • Provides evidence-based information on why blood vessels require omega-3 fatty acids to maintain health • Details best sources of the various fatty acids, including plant-based sources • Includes “at-home tests” to assess cardiovascular status • Presents literature on how to improve chances of avoiding heart attacks, peripheral arterial disease, strokes, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes The Omega-Factor: Promoting Health, Preventing Premature Aging and Reducing the Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death is an essential resource for healthcare professionals, clinicians and dietitians, as well as for the reader who aims to achieve the goal of a much longer health-span, not just a longer lifespan.

Book Mind Reading as a Cultural Practice

Download or read book Mind Reading as a Cultural Practice written by Laurens Schlicht and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a genealogical perspective on various forms of mind reading in different settings. We understand mind reading in a broad sense as the twentieth-century attempt to generate knowledge of what people held in their minds – with a focus on scientifically-based governmental practices. This volume considers the techniques of mind reading within a wider perspective of discussions about technological innovation within neuroscience, the juridical system, “occult” practices and discourses within the wider field of parapsychology and magical beliefs. The authors address the practice of, and discourses on, mind reading as they form part of the consolidation of modern governmental techniques. The collected contributions explore the question of how these techniques have been epistemically formed, institutionalized, practiced, discussed, and how they have been used to shape forms of subjectivities – collectively through human consciousness or individually through the criminal, deviant, or spiritual subject. The first part of this book focuses on the technologies and media of mind reading, while the second part addresses practices of mind reading as they have been used within the juridical sphere. The volume is of interest to a broad scholarly readership dealing with topics in interdisciplinary fields such as the history of science, history of knowledge, cultural studies, and techniques of subjectivization.

Book A Balanced Omega 6 omega 3 Fatty Acid Ratio Cholesterol and Coronary Heart Disease

Download or read book A Balanced Omega 6 omega 3 Fatty Acid Ratio Cholesterol and Coronary Heart Disease written by Artemis P. Simopoulos and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than half a century, the relationship between dietary factors and coronary heart disease (CHD) has been a major focus of health research. Contrary to the established view, current data suggest that dietary cholesterol is not a primary factor of or causes heart disease with the possible exception of the genetic forms of familial hypercholesterolemias. For instance, recent clinical trials evaluating the effect of cholesterol-lowering drugs on the development of chronic heart failure, diabetes and stroke have yielded disappointing results. On the other hand, an unbalanced omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid ratio and a cholesterol intake not consistent with the amount during evolution seem to be causal factors in the development of CHD. A panel of international experts in genetics, nutrition, fatty acid, cholesterol, metabolism and coronary heart disease has contributed to this publication, summarizing and critically discussing for the first time the importance of evolutionary aspects of diet, the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid ratio and cholesterol intake relative to health and CHD. They also propose measuring blood fatty acids in the population in order to define the risk of CHD and other chronic diseases. This book will be of interest to physicians (cardiologists, gerontologists, and pediatricians), nutritionists, dieticians, health care providers, scientists in industry and government and policy makers.

Book Omega

  • Author : Camille Flammarion
  • Publisher : Standard Ebooks
  • Release : 2018-09-10T20:12:50Z
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Omega written by Camille Flammarion and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2018-09-10T20:12:50Z with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1842, Camille Flammarion was a French astronomer who wrote many popular books about science and astronomy, together with a number of novels which we would now consider to be science fiction. He was a contemporary of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, though his works never achieved their level of popularity. Omega: The Last Days of the World is an English translation of Flammarion’s novel La Fin du Monde, published in 1893. The book’s fictional premise is the discovery of a comet on a collision course with the Earth in the 25th century. However, this is mostly a pretext on which Flammarion can hang his interesting scientific speculations about how the world will end, together with philosophical thoughts about war and religion. Much of the scientific description he uses in the book, while accurately representing the knowledge and thinking of his time, has today been superseded by modern discoveries. For example, we now know the source of the Sun’s energy to be nuclear fusion rather than being due to gravitational contraction and the constant infall of meteorites. When talking about the ills of society, however, Flammarion could well be talking about today’s world. For example, he excoriates the vast waste of society’s resources on war, and demonstrates how much more productive each nation’s economy would be without it. He also depicts the media of his future world as having been entirely taken over by commercial interests, publishing only what will excite the greatest number of readers rather than serving the public interest. Omega ranges over a vast period of time, from prehistory through to millions of years in the future when mankind has been reduced to the last two doomed individuals. Nevertheless, the book ends on a hopeful and inspiring note. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book Omega 3 Delivery Systems

Download or read book Omega 3 Delivery Systems written by Pedro J. García-Moreno and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-07-25 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Omega-3 Delivery Systems: Production, Physical Characterization and Oxidative Stability offers the most recent updates for developing, characterizing, and stabilizing both traditional and novel omega-3 delivery systems, including their final incorporation into food matrices and physicochemical changes during digestion. The book brings chapters on novel omega-3 delivery systems (e.g., high-fat emulsions, Pickering emulsions, electrosprayed capsules, and solid lipid nanoparticles), the application of advanced techniques to evaluate physical and oxidative stabilities (e.g., SAXS, SANS, ESR, and super-resolution fluorescence microscopy), and new developments of food enrichment and physicochemical changes during digestion. The book provides a unique multidisciplinary and multisectoral approach, i.e., featuring authors from industry and academy. Long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) present numerous health benefits; however, the consumption of natural products rich in omega-3 PUFA (e.g., fish, krill, and algae) is not enough to reach the daily-recommended values. Therefore, the food industry is highly interested in producing omega-3 fortified foods. Brings a holistic approach of omega-3 delivery systems, bringing scientific understanding on production, physical characterization, and oxidative stability Covers key aspects to develop, characterize, and use omega-3 delivery systems for food enrichment, considering physicochemical changes occurring during digestion Serves as an interface between lipid oxidation and colloids chemistry, encapsulation techniques, soft matter physics, food development, and nutrients bioavailability
