Book excerpt: In the last two centuries Britain has experienced a revolution in higher education, with the number of students rising from a few hundred to several million. Yet the institutions that drove - and still drive - this change have been all but ignored by historians. Drawing on a decade's research, and based on work in dozens of archives, many of them used for the very first time, this is the first full-scale study of the civic universities - new institutions in the nineteenth century reflecting the growth of major Victorian cities in Britain, such as Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, York, and Durham - for more than 50 years. Tracing their story from the 1780s until the 2010s, it is an ambitious attempt to write the Redbrick revolution back into history. William Whyte argues that these institutions created a distinctive and influential conception of the university - something that was embodied in their architecture and expressed in the lives of their students and staff. It was this Redbrick model that would shape their successors founded in the twentieth century: ensuring that the normal university experience in Britain is a Redbrick one. Using a vast range of previously untapped sources, Redbrick is not just a new history, but a new sort of university history: one that seeks to rescue the social and architectural aspects of education from the disregard of previous scholars, and thus provide the richest possible account of university life. It will be of interest to students and scholars of modern British history, to anyone who has ever attended university, and to all those who want to understand how our higher education system has developed - and how it may evolve in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of the relationships between universities and the state is one of considerable current concern and debate. This book studies the development of the modern university system in England from the mid-nineteenth century to the outbreak of the Second World War, focusing on the role of the state. In this formidabe study, the author covers a range of key areas, including: * a review of the reforms of the ancient universities, the creation of civic universities and the formation of the federal London University * an examination of the co-ordinated system in the early years of the twentieth century and the inter-war period * an analysis of universities as modenising agencies of the state * a discussion of such issues as technical versus literary curricula, the clash between central and local authorities, and the output of universities in terms of the needs of the state and the economy. Students of history and education, academic historians will find this an informative and important text.

Book The Older Universities of England

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Older Universities of England: Based Upon a Course of Lectures Delivered on the Lowell Foundation, Boston, U. S. A., March 1922 Oxford and Cambridge, despite occasional proddings from kings, prelates, and parliamentary commissions, have done most of their reforming themselves. They have Shown the same adaptability to the needs Of successive ages that has made the British Constitution and the Catholic Church endure. Certainly nowhere else but at Oxford and Cambridge is there such an irresistible mingling of the Old and the new, of ancient fabric and youthful spirit. The secret of this principle Of self-renewal, I think Mr. Mansbridge has revealed in Chapter XV, where he speaks of the single-minded men who have never been disloyal in their search for truth, no matter where it might lead them, and who have counted all else well lost if only they did not falter in their difficult way.' Book The Routledge Handbook of English Medium Instruction in Higher Education

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of English Medium Instruction in Higher Education written by Kingsley Bolton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook discusses the theoretical and disciplinary background to the study of English-medium instruction (EMI) in higher education worldwide. It highlights issues relating to EMI pedagogy, varying motivations for EMI education, and the delivery of EMI in diverse contexts across the world. The spread of English as a teaching medium and the lingua franca of the academic world has been the subject of various debates in recent years on the perceived hegemony of the English language and the ‘domain loss’ of non-English languages in academic communication. Encompassing a wide range of contributions to the field of EMI, the chapters of this Handbook are arranged in four distinct parts: Part I provides an overview of English-medium instruction in higher education worldwide; Part II focusses on EMI in Europe; Part III on EMI in the Middle East, North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa; and Part IV on EMI in the Asian region. The overall scope and level of expertise of this Handbook provides an unrivalled overview of this field of education. It serves as an essential reference for many courses dealing with applied linguistics, English language education, multilingualism, sociolinguistics, and related subjects at many levels of education, including Master’s and PhD-level studies. This Handbook serves as a valuable edition for university libraries across the world and an essential read for many faculty, undergraduate and postgraduate students, educators, and policymakers.
