This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHAPTER I The Pickwickians The first ray of light which illumines the gloom, and converts into a dazzling brilliancy that obscurity in which the earlier history of the public career of the immortal Pickwick would appear to be involved, is derived from the perusal of the following entry in the Transactions of the Pickwick Club, which the editor of these papers feels the highest pleasure in laying before his readers, as a proof of the careful attention, indefatigable assiduity, and nice discrimination, with which his search among the multifarious documents confided to him has been conducted. “May 12, 1827. Joseph Smiggers, Esq., P.V.P.M.P.C.,1 presiding. The following resolutions unanimously agreed to:— 1 Perpetual Vice-President—Member Pickwick Club. “That this Association has heard read, with feelings of unmingled satisfaction, and unqualified approval, the paper communicated by Samuel Pickwick, Esq., G.C.M.P.C.,2 entitled ‘Speculations on the Source of the Hampstead Ponds, with some Observations on the Theory of Tittlebats’; and that this Association does hereby return its warmest thanks to the said Samuel Pickwick, Esq., G.C.M.P.C., for the same. 2 General Chairman—Member Pickwick Club. “That while this Association is deeply sensible of the advantages which must accrue to the cause of science from the production to which they have just adverted,—no less than from the unwearied researches of Samuel Pickwick, Esq., G.C.M.P.C., in Hornsey, Highgate, Brixton, and Camberwell,—they cannot but entertain a lively sense of the inestimable benefits which must inevitably result from carrying the speculations of that learned man into a wider field, from extending his travels, and consequently enlarging his sphere of observation, to the advancement of knowledge, and the diffusion of learning. “That, with the view just mentioned, this Association has taken into its serious consideration a proposal, emanating from the aforesaid Samuel Pickwick, Esq., G.C.M.P.C., and three other Pickwickians hereinafter named, for forming a new branch of United Pickwickians, under the title of The Corresponding Society of the Pickwick Club. “That the said proposal has received the sanction and approval of this Association. “That the Corresponding Society of the Pickwick Club is therefore hereby constituted; and that Samuel Pickwick, Esq., G.C.M.P.C., Tracy Tupman, Esq., M.P.C., Augustus Snodgrass, Esq., M.P.C., and Nathaniel Winkle, Esq., M.P.C., are hereby nominated and appointed members of the same; and that they be requested to forward, from time to time, authenticated accounts of their journeys and investigations, of their observations of character and manners, and of the whole of their adventures, together with all tales and papers to which local scenery or associations may give rise, to the Pickwick Club, stationed in London. “That this Association cordially recognises the principle of every member of the Corresponding Society defraying his own travelling expenses; and that it sees no objection whatever to the members of the said society pursuing their inquiries for any length of time they please, upon the same terms. “That the members of the aforesaid Corresponding Society be, and are, hereby informed, that their proposal to pay the postage of their letters, and the carriage of their parcels, has been deliberated upon by this Association: that this Association considers such proposal worthy of the great minds from which it emanated, and that it hereby signifies its perfect acquiescence therein.” To be continue in this ebook

Book Biker Gangs and Organized Crime

Download or read book Biker Gangs and Organized Crime written by Thomas Barker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-04-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the reported criminal behavior of the entire spectrum of 1% biker clubs and members. It identifies the clubs whose members have been involved in criminal behavior and classifies their behaviors as individual, group, or club- sponsored/condoned behavior. While other books examine the criminal exploits of one or more of what are called the "Big Five" biker clubs because of their size and sophistication, or the sensational crimes of lesser known 1% biker clubs or club members, this book pays attention to the criminal activities of individuals, groups and chapters of other clubs as well. The book is based on journalistic accounts and autobiographies of former and present members of biker clubs, academic/scholarly works, law enforcement/government reports, articles from newspapers and biker web sites, and a content analysis of federal and state court cases regarding bikers and motorcycle clubs. Text enhanced with numerous photos and figures.

Book Hogs Blogs Leathers and Lattes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines more than 45 years of the author's riding experiences with data collected over five years of systematic observation and extensive ethnographic interviews with over 200 male and female riders. Much has been written about hardcore bikers, but there has been little scholarly research on the much larger segment of the population more aptly called motorcycle enthusiasts. This book focuses on them--the hard working plumbers, truck drivers, and other blue collar workers as well as the white collar executives, doctors and other professionals who are mostly married, have mortgages, pay their bills, obey the law, and on weekends and holidays participate in a favorite pastime, riding motorcycles.

Book Unleashing Powerhouse

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cole, who’s known as Powerhouse by his brothers, steers clear of relationships. Why? Because his mother taught him a valuable lesson in love. Never give your heart away and always keep your distance. He had a rough and rowdy childhood, one full of traumatic events. He’s lived by a code. But now he’s met her, and he can’t remember any of those reasons. She makes him question all of his beliefs. His heart beats for her, which is weird because it barely beats for him. Salem had a wonderful upbringing, full of love and laughter. Her dad was her everything, and her mother was her best friend. Until her father lost his life, and her mother’s heartbreak made her take off in search of greener pastures. Salem lost them both. Despite her world crumbling around her, she never gave up on life or love. She’s a dynamo who’s determined to break down all of Cole’s defenses. Giving up is not a word in her dictionary. She may think she’s not picture perfect for him, looks wise, but she knows she’s what’s best for his heart. Their motto: Never give up, fight the good fight, never go to bed angry, and always kiss and make up. Will the club’s enemies put their future at risk? Or will their strengths boil over and fill the club with hope?

Book Texas Reporter Texas Radical

Download or read book Texas Reporter Texas Radical written by Dick J. Reavis and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing about Texas, Mexico, and Texan-Mexican relations for over four decades, Dick J. Reavis is one of the most poignant political voices of Texas—not as a politician, though his writings are infused with politics, but as a candid, unsentimental, probing, journalist. Reavis has worked as a reporter, features author, and staff writer (San Antonio Express-News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Observer, San Antonio Light), as a Senior Editor of Texas Monthly, and as a professor of journalism (North Carolina State University). He has authored six books and translated two from Spanish. Throughout his award-winning career, he has returned consistently to investigate the lives of everyday Texans, insistently challenging prevailing political assumptions and mythologies. It was precisely this commitment that prompted him to investigate the federal government’s siege of the Branch Davidians in 1993 outside of Waco, TX, which led to his best-known work, The Ashes of Waco: An Investigation (1995), a book that challenged government accounts and mainstream media. This anthology demonstrates the range of his writings, which include investigations of Mexican guerillas and Texas biker-gangs, the struggles of urban day-laborers and of undocumented immigrants in rural areas, the politics of Texas radicals during the Civil Rights movement, and the activities of the Klan and other far right groups across the state, to identify but a few. This collection of Reavis’s writings brings into focus the voice and political commitments of this critical, contemporary, Texas writer.
