Book The Old Appalachian Trail in Southwestern Virginia

Download or read book The Old Appalachian Trail in Southwestern Virginia written by Susan Gail Arey and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1920's and 30's to 1952, the AT took a whole different route in southern Virginia than it does now. Since then it has been largely forgotten. The author, over several years time and several trips, with the help of old guidebooks and maps, researched the route, took extensive photos of what the early AT hikers would have seen, and has both given a description of the old route and directions for finding it in modern day terms. Most of it is drive-able on roads and makes a nice drive through beautiful mountain scenery. A few parts, both short ( a mile or two) and long (several miles) are on footpath for those who like to hike.

Book Virginia s Lost Appalachian Trail

Download or read book Virginia s Lost Appalachian Trail written by Mills Kelly and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walk in the footsteps of Virginia's earliest hikers. For more than two decades hikers on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia walked through some of the most beautiful landscapes of the southern mountains. Then, in 1952, the Appalachian Trail Conference moved the trail more than 50 miles to the west. Lost in that move were opportunities to scramble over the Pinnacles of Dan, to sit on Fisher's Peak and gaze out over the North Carolina Piedmont, or to cross the New River on a flat-bottomed boat called Redbud for a nickel. Historian and lifelong hiker Mills Kelly tells the story of a 300-mile section of the Appalachian Trail that is all but forgotten by hikers, but not by the residents of the Southwestern Virginia counties that the trail used to cross.

Book The Appalachian National Scenic Trail

Download or read book The Appalachian National Scenic Trail written by Charles H. W. Foster and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1968, management of the Appalachian Trail shifted from control by an informal alliance of private-citizen volunteers to a designated responsibilty of the National Park Service. To protect it from adverse development, Congress had made the trail part of the national park system and endorsed an unique private/public cooperative management system involving scores of private organizations and public jurisdictions. The volunteers still have the lead role in defining the work, but public agencies have the accountability. This June 1987 history is the inside story of how the pieces of that puzzle were put together, by the chairman of a group of volunteers and state-appointed officials that crafted this model of private/public stewardship of public recreational lands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Fox Jr. published this great romantic novel of the Cumberland Mountains of Kentucky and Virginia in 1908, and the book quickly became one of America’s favorites. It has all the elements of a good romance—a superior but natural heroine, a hero who is an agent of progress and enlightenment, a group of supposedly benighted mountaineers to be drawn into the flow of mainstream American culture, a generous dose of social and class struggle, and a setting among the misty coves and cliffs of the blue Cumberlands. Reprinted with a foreword by John Ed Pearce, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine has all the excitement and poignance that caught and held readers’ interest when the book first appeared.
