In particular the adaptation of the Davidon method, the conjugate gradient method, and the best step steepest descent method to distributed parameters is presented. The class of problems with quadratic cost functionals and linear dynamics is investigated. Penalty functions are used to render constrained problems amenable to these gradient techniques. Also considered is an analysis of the effects of discretization of continuous distributed parameter optimal control problems. Estimates of discretization error bounds are established and a measure of the suboptimality of the numerical solution is presented.

Other goals include the realization and further advancement of these concepts in the context of robust and hierarchical optimization, partial differential games, and nonlinear partial differential complementarity problems, as well as their validation in the context of complex applications. Areas for which applications are considered include optimal control of multiphase fluids and of superconductors, image processing, thermoforming, and the formation of rivers and networks. Chapters are written by leading researchers and present results obtained in the first funding phase of the DFG Special Priority Program on Nonsmooth and Complementarity Based Distributed Parameter Systems: Simulation and Hierarchical Optimization that ran from 2016 to 2019.

Book excerpt: These proceedings contain lectures and contributed papers presented at the NATO-NSF Advanced Stucy Institute on Optimization of Distributed Parameter Structures (Iowa City, Iowa 21 May - 4 June, 1980). The institute was organized by E. Haug and J. Cea, with the enthusiastic help of leading contributors to the field of distributed parameter structural optimization. The principle con tributor to this field during the past two decades, Professor William Prager, participated in planning for the Institute and helped to establish its technical direction. His death just prior to the Institute is a deep loss to the community of engineers and mathematicians in the field, to which he made pioneering contri butions. The proceedings are organized into seven parts, each address ing important problems and special considerations involving classes of structural optimization problems. The review paper presented first in the proceedings surveys contributions to the field, primarily during the decade 1970-1980. Part I of the pro ceedings addresses optimality criteria methods for analyzing and solving problems of distributed parameter structural optimization. Optimality criteria obtained using variational methods of mech anics, calculus of variation, optimal control theory, and abstract optimization theory are presented for numerous classes of struct ures; including beams, columns, plates, grids, shells, and arches.

Book excerpt: Optimal control theory of distributed parameter systems has been a very active field in recent years; however, very few books have been devoted to the studiy of computational algorithms for solving optimal control problems. For this rason the authors decided to write this book. Because the area is so broad, they confined themselves to optimal control problems involving first and second boundary-value problems of a linear second-order parabolic partial differential equation. However the techniques used are by no means restricted to these problems. They can be and in some cases already have been applied to problems involving other types of distributed parameter system. The authors aim is to devise computational algorithms for solving optimal control problems with particular emphasis on the mathematical theory underlying the algorithms. These algorithms are obtained by using a first-order strong variational method or gradient-type methods.
