Book The Nonprofit Sector in France

Download or read book The Nonprofit Sector in France written by E. Archambault and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to reveal the extent to which nonprofit organisations, despite their invisibility in official statistics, have become one of the clearest expression of social and cultural change in France. Edith Archambault argues that the nonprofit organisations have a unique ability to marry private initiative with public cocerns and therefore become the most flexible partners of modern social policies.

Book The French Nonprofit Sector

Download or read book The French Nonprofit Sector written by Laura Nirello and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article deals with the literature on the French nonprofit sector (NPS). A preliminary part is devoted to presenting and discussing the characteristics that shape the approaches to this sector in France. We stress the strong influence of legal categories on the sector’s definition and, in this context, the importance of the status inherited from the 1901 Act on contracts of association. This raises a problem for a more analytical approach to the sector, because the diversity of the nonprofit organizations (NPOs) regulated under this Act risks being overshadowed. In this first part, we also underline the primacy accorded in France to the concept of the social economy, which has today become the social and solidarity economy (SSE), over that of the nonprofit sector. In the second part, the article outlines some landmarks in the history of the French NPS. French NPOs were for many years objects of suspicion, arbitrariness and repression on the part of the public authorities and this persisted until the 1901 legislation on contracts of association was enacted. However, this hostile context did not prevent the sector from having a richer existence than is sometimes admitted. This literature review also focuses on empirical studies of the sector, placing a particular emphasis on the more recent ones. These French studies basically adopt two types of approach. The first is concerned essentially with the NPOs and focuses its attention on their economic importance, whether measured in terms of financial resources, employment, or, less frequently, added value. The second approach investigates the kinds of individual participation the sector engenders by examining the various forms it takes, such as membership of NPOs or voluntary work. This review ends with the analysis of the challenges that NPS faces in a context characterized by the increasing constraints on public funding, changes in the nature of such funding with a substitution of contracts for subsidies, an increased competition among NPOs as well as between NPOs and for-profit enterprises. The article concludes that, despite the advances in research on the French NPS, some aspects—like formal volunteering and the role of voluntary associations—are still understudied, while others—like informal groups and informal volunteering—are almost totally ignored.

Book The Welfare State s Other Crisis

Download or read book The Welfare State s Other Crisis written by Claire Frances Ullman and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most observers have equated privatization with a conservative assault on the welfare state, Claire F. Ullman demonstrates that such was not the case in France. There, delegation to nonprofits was motivated by the desire to increase the state's ability to achieve progressive social goals, including enabling welfare programs to reach more of the disadvantaged. Elites sought to recruit nonprofit organizations as partners not to roll back the state, but to bolster and extend its power. Ullman suggests that the western welfare state's new reliance on nonprofit organizations should be re-evaluated in light of the French case.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil society organizations, nonprofits, national and international nongovernmental organizations, and a variety of formal and informal associations have coalesced into a world political force. Though the components of this so-called third sector vary by country, their cumulative effects play an ever-greater role in global affairs. Looking at relief and welfare organizations, innovation organizations, social networks, and many other kinds of groups, Meghan Elizabeth Kallman and Terry Nichols Clark explore the functions, impacts, and composition of the nonprofit sector in six key countries. Chinese organizations, for example, follow the predominantly Asian model of government funding that links their mission to national political goals. Western groups, by contrast, often explicitly challenge government objectives, and even gain relevance and cache by doing so. In addition, Kallman and Clark examine groups in real-world contexts, providing a wealth of political-historical background, in-depth consideration of interactions with state institutions, region-by-region comparisons, and suggestions for how groups can borrow policy options across systems. Insightful and forward-seeing, The Third Sector provides a rare international view of organizations and agendas driving change in today's international affairs.

Book Comparative Corporate Governance of Non Profit Organizations

Download or read book Comparative Corporate Governance of Non Profit Organizations written by Klaus J. Hopt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic importance of the non-profit sector is growing rapidly in the USA and Europe. However, the law has not kept abreast with its development. The European Court of Justice has extended certain freedoms of the EC Treaty to non-profit organisations, and more case law is expected to follow in the near future, but the observations, theories, solutions and legal and non-legal rules in this field are manifold. The chances of harmonising the law on a European level are slim. Despite these differences, a common core of international corporate governance problems and regulatory solutions can be seen. This volume of essays brings together a variety of international experts from both corporate governance and governance of non-profit organisations to compare the two areas and explore the lessons that can be learned regarding comparative corporate governance for non-profit organisations.
