In this collection, Wiley shows it’s no fun finding out about mutual funds, Wall Street snow angels look like dollar signs, and we can discover most of what we need to know about economics on street corners. Non Sequitur has won four National Cartoonists Society divisional awards, the most prestigious prize in cartooning. This book was released on 2000-07-24 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description: The Amazing Common Sense Guide for Your Investment Success, John A. Thomchick presents a practical program to make either the novice investor or the long-time, frustrated investor "whole." The investor becomes whole by obtaining knowledge, diversifying, practicing money management principles and undertaking a self-examination of his own investing temperament. Dr. Thomchick first leads the reader though basic budgeting and goal setting scenarios. He then introduces a variety of investment classes, including stocks, mutual funds, bonds, precious metals, currencies, and insurance, the latter an often neglected investment vehicle. Dr. Thomchick then gives an introduction to market technical analysis, market indices and the global financial architecture. A final chapter on conspiracies and market gurus is must reading for all investors. The book contains numerous references and addresses for the novice investor and will serve as a reference for even the more sophisticated investor. Dr. Thomchick claims that investing is not "rocket science" but it does require common sense. This guide is designed to provide that common sense. Author Biography: John A. Thomchick got “mad as hell” over the 1987 stock market crash and decided to learn as much as possible about investing. Over the decade of the 1990s he has not only been a successful investor but began his own financial newsletter, The Whole Investor Report. Dr. Thomchick has a Ph.D. in Physics from Penn State University and has worked in both academia and industry. He has authored or co-authored over 20 technical papers and professional reports.

Book The Philosophy of Taxation and Public Finance

Download or read book The Philosophy of Taxation and Public Finance written by Robert W. McGee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-12-31 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most public finance books are texts, which are aimed at undergraduate or graduate students. They are overly technical in nature and appeal only to a narrow range of bureaucrats and academics. Books on taxation are written for tax practitioners and usually emphasize either what the law is or how to maneuver through the labyrinth of tax law to minimize taxes for clients. Philosophy books on taxation or public finance simply do not exist. The Philosophy of Taxation and Public Finance is different. It is written in nontechnical language and is aimed to appeal to a wide range of readers, including practitioners, academics and students in the fields of taxation, public finance, economics, law, philosophy and political science as well as general readers who are interested in learning why they are being taxed the way they are. The author addresses the major issues and topics in taxation and public finance and injects them with philosophical insights. He discusses questions such as: -What arguments have been used to justify taxation? -When is tax evasion unethical? -Are some taxes better than others? -What are the proper functions of government? -How much is enough? Is the ability to pay concept valid? -When can punitive taxes be justified?

Book Non Sequitur s Beastly Things

Download or read book Non Sequitur s Beastly Things written by Wiley Miller and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 1999-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If a cartoonist successfully captures life's humorous and ironic moments in three short panels, readers applaud. When Wiley does the same in his single-scene format, they roll on the carpet laughing. Seven years ago, Wiley exited the editorial pages of the San Francisco Examiner with the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award in his pocket and began a career as the preeminent solo panel creator working today. Non Sequitur readers were ready for his wild and unpredictable takes on an untamed world. Non Sequitur not only breaks the three-panel mold, it succeeds without regular characters, standard settings, or repeat situations to fall back on. Each piece, in other words, hangs out there as Wiley's snapshot of the worlds of work, leisure, and life's many crossroads. Following the solid success of his last collection, The Non Sequitur Survival Guide for the Nineties, Wiley's newest collection is destined to continue his sardonic tradition. Non Sequitur's Beastly Things, as guided by Rolf the dog, promises to keep readers howling, growling, and scratching for more. They will delight, for instance, in crocodiles luring fishermen with dollar bills, Randy the science lab kid who announces that his homework ate his dog, and the desert dweller who celebrates the change of season by raking needles beneath his cacti.

Book Reforming Pensions

Download or read book Reforming Pensions written by Nicholas Barr and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mandatory pensions are a worldwide phenomenon. However, with fixed contribution rates, monthly benefits, and retirement ages, pension systems are not consistent with three long-run trends: declining mortality, declining fertility, and earlier retirement. Many systems need reform. This book gives an extensive nontechnical explanation of the economics of pension design. The theoretical arguments have three elements: * Pension systems have multiple objectives--consumption smoothing, insurance, poverty relief, and redistribution. Good policy needs to bear them all in mind. * Good analysis should be framed in a second-best context-- simple economic models are a bad guide to policy design in a world with imperfect information and decision-making, incomplete markets and taxation. * Any choice of pension system has risk-sharing and distributional consequences, which the book recognizes explicitly. Barr and Diamond's analysis includes labor markets, capital markets, risk sharing, and gender and family, with comparison of PAYG and funded systems, recognizing that the suitable level of funding differs by country. Alongside the economic principles of good design, policy must also take account of a country's capacity to implement the system. Thus the theoretical analysis is complemented by discussion of implementation, and of experiences, both good and bad, in many countries, with particular attention to Chile and China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B> The Seventh Edition builds upon its reputation as the most effective and economical solution to the widest variety of writing problems writers will encounter. This comprehensive guide uses the most effective teaching method there is: showing, not telling. Readers are guided to solve their writing problems almost entirely by means of typical, real-life examples. Even the longest sections take up only a few pages and each visually attractive page is designed to enhance the user-friendly format of the guide. Further, the content is arranged alphabetically by correction symbol, a feature found in no other handbook. Gives readers immediate answers to specific problems. Offers sufficient information to solve them, yet does so with extreme brevity and clarity. Presents a table of correction symbols that doubles as a table of contents to help students easily find answers. Cross-references a network of logical relationships among subjects that appear under separate headings. Helps develop writing style and addresses ESL problems. For anyone who writes, especially for composition, creative writing, and business and technical writing.

Book Reading and Writing for Civic Literacy

Download or read book Reading and Writing for Civic Literacy written by Donald Lazere and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Lazere's [book] is heaven-sent and will provide a crucial link in the chain of understanding how conflicts are structured and, most importantly, how they can be rationally addressed - a healthy antidote to the scepticism that has become so pervasive in academic life.' Alan Hausman, Hunter College This innovative book addresses the need for college students to develop critical reading, writing, and thinking skills for self-defence in the contentious arena of American civic rhetoric. In a groundbreaking reconception of composition theory, it presents a comprehensive critical perspective on American public discourse and practical methods for its analysis. Exercises following the text sections and readings help students understand the ideological positions and rhetorical patterns that underlie opposing viewpoints in current controversies - such as the growing inequality of wealth in America and its impact on the finances of college students - as expressed in paired sets of readings from the political left and right. Widely debated issues of whether objectivity is possible and whether there is a liberal or conservative bias in news and entertainment media, as well as in education itself, are foregrounded as topics for rhetorical analysis.
