Download or read book A Song to Sing a Life to Live written by Don Saliers and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating the spirit of song In A Song to Sing, a Life to Live, Don and Emily Saliers help readers see the connections between Saturday night music and Sunday morning music by exploring the spiritual dimensions of music itself. They tell the stories of their own lives in music, and they share what they have learned and observed about the power of music in human life. They help us appreciate the joy of music and also how music carries us into places of sorrow, where we must go if we are to live with honesty about ourselves and compassion for others. This book is for churchgoers and spiritual seekers alike. Music is described in terms of spiritual practice; it has the power to embrace those who are deeply immersed in the life of Christian faith and speak to those who are spiritual but may question formal religion. The book explores a wide variety of musical traditions and offers an invitation to embrace a broader and deeper vision of the power of music and the spiritual dimensions of attentive listening. "This is a beautiful expression of music as many things--healer, gift, symbol of freedom and community, and agent of change" (Mary Chapin Carpenter).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing in the Night is a collection of more than 50 inspiring prayers, poems, and prose, perfect for nighttime reading, worship, or personal reflection. Each meditation illustrates that faith is not to be taken for granted - it must be attended to, cared for, and practiced. The four writers who contribute to Singing in the Night offer hope, gratitude, and a sense of deep humility at day's end: Gordon McKeeman compares religion to a van that needs regular check-ups, even when it seems to be in good working order. Kaaren Anderson imagines Eve, banished from the Garden of Eden, but thrilled. "I knew it lay before me," Eve exclaims, "my life, my opportunity, my humanness." Jane Ellen Mauldin offers an end-of-day meditation that includes "a silent sigh of gratitude for yet one more chance to do our job again, and go on." David Rankin contributes a poem that celebrates prayer and humility, "I love to pray . . . to peek through a mystic window and look upon the fabric of life . . . and to think how little I know." All four contributors are ministers who don't have all the answers. They have convictions and questions. They uphold faith yet express honest doubt, inspiring readers to trust their own questions. The meditations in Singing in the Night have been selected from meditation manuals published annually by the Unitarian Universalist Association. They reflect the theological diversity of Unitarian Universalism, a non-creedal religion that draws inspiration from many faith traditions around the world. These meditations encourage readers to explore their own religious path, a path traveled by believers everywhere.

Book Singing with the Dogon Prophet

Download or read book Singing with the Dogon Prophet written by Walter E.A. van Beek and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-04-25 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Dogon funeral proceedings, a major song cycle called baja ni is performed in a session of at least seven hours. The texts of the chants are attributed to a legendary figure called Abirɛ, who as a blind singer in the nineteenth century roamed the heartland of the Dogon. The baja ni songs have escaped scholarly attention thus far. Singing with the Dogon Prophet by Walter E.A. van Beek, Oumarou S. Ongoiba, and Atimε D. Saye provides their first publication in English as well as an analysis of these songs. These texts deal with the relations between man and woman, man’s ambivalent dependency on the otherworld, and with life and death; the whole night performance is one of the high points of the funeral. Additionally, Abirɛ is a prophet, and during his life has uttered a great number of prophecies on a wide range of topics, from local issues to the relation of the Dogon with the Fulbe herdsmen, and from the arrival of the colonials to ecological transformation. This book examines how these prophecies with these songs offer an inside view of the way the Dogon construct the present in a continuous dialogue with their past and their projected future.

Book Singing Family of the Cumberlands

Download or read book Singing Family of the Cumberlands written by Jean Ritchie and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 1988-08-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "singing family" of which Jean Ritchie writes is that of her parents, Balis and Abigail Ritchie, and their fourteen children, all born and reared in Viper, Kentucky, deep in the Cumberland Mountains. Jean, the youngest of the clan, grew up to be a world renowned folksinger. But she was hardly unique in the family. All the Ritchies sang -- when they worked, when they prayed, when they rejoiced, even when tragedy struck. Singing Family of the Cumberlands is both an appealing account of family life and a treasury of American folklore and folksong. In the deceptively simple but picturesque language of rural Kentucky, Jean Ritchie tells of a way of life now nearly vanished and of a gentle, upright people shielded from the outside world by forbidding mountain ranges, preserving the traditions of their forebears. Foremost among those traditions were the British folksongs brought from England by James Ritchie in 1768. Even in a region noted for its wealth of folksongs, the Ritchies' inheritance was exceptional. Forty-two of the family's beloved songs are woven through Jean Ritchie's narrative, complete with words and often musical scores. Each song evokes a memory for Jean -- hoeing corn, stirring off molasses, telling ghost stories, singing a dying baby to its eternal rest. Songs lightened the burden of poverty for the Ritchies and brought them joy and solace. Illustrated by Maurice Sendak, Singing Family of the Cumberlands will delight readers in all walks of life.
