Book excerpt: "ONLY one day more," cried Patty Hirst, surveying with deep interest the large new box which stoodby the side of the chest of drawers in her bedroom; "just one day! How dreadfully quickly the timehas come! I feel quite queer when I think about it. I can scarcely believe that before the end of theweek both I and my luggage will be a whole hundred miles away, and settled at Morton Priory. I dowonder how I shall like it?""Very much, I hope," replied her mother, pausing for a moment in her task of packing the neatpiles of linen and underclothing into as small a compass as possible. "I'm sure it seems a delightfulschool, and you are an extremely lucky girl to be going there.""Yes," said Patty, with a rather doubtful tone in her voice, sitting down on the edge of the bed, and beginning to turn over the pocket handkerchiefs, the new blouses, the ties, hair ribbons, andother articles which made up her schoolgirl outfit; "I suppose I am lucky. Perhaps it may be nicerthan I think. I wanted to go dreadfully when Uncle Sidney first wrote about it, but somehow nowthat it's got almost to starting off, do you know I feel as if I'd changed my mind, and I'm not at allsure that I wouldn't rather stay at home. It seems too horrible to have to go amongst so many newirls.

Book The Nicest Girl in the School Esprios Classics

Download or read book The Nicest Girl in the School Esprios Classics written by Angela Brazil and published by . This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angela Brazil (1868-1947) was the first of the British writers of "modern" School Girls' Stories genre - written from the characters' point of view. Along with her sister Amy, Angela then studied at Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. She was quite late in taking up writing, developing a strong interest in Welsh mythology, and at first wrote a few magazine articles on mythology and nature. It was possibly thanks to her sister Amy that she finally began work on a novel at the age of 35. Exceptionally with respect to many of her contemporaries writing in this vein, Brazil did not write any books in a series - each stood on its own with different characters every time. These were considered to deal accurately and sympathetically with the highs and lows in the lives of middle-class schoolgirls, including the tangle of emotional friendships.

Book The Good Girl Stripped Bare

Download or read book The Good Girl Stripped Bare written by Tracey Spicer and published by HarperCollins Australia. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From bogan to boned and beyond -- a full-frontal 'femoir' by one of Australia's best-loved journalists From bogan to boned and beyond – a full-frontal femoir Tracey Spicer was always the good girl. Inspired by Jana Wendt, this bogan from the Brisbane backwaters waded through the 'cruel and shallow money trench' of television to land a dream role: national news anchor for a commercial network. But the journalist found that, for women, TV was less about news and more about helmet hair, masses of makeup and fatuous fashion, in an era when bosses told you to 'stick your tits out', 'lose two inches off your arse', and 'quit before you're too long in the tooth'. Still, Tracey plastered on a smile and did what she was told. But when she was sacked by email after having a baby, this good girl turned 'bad', taking legal action against the network for pregnancy discrimination. In this frank and funny 'femoir' - part memoir, part manifesto - Tracey 'sheconstructs' the structural barriers facing women in the workplace and encourages us all to shake off the shackles of the good girl. "Glows with the wisdom of a woman who has learned essential truths about love, life and happiness" - Caroline Overington "Wickedly witty and wonderfully wise" - Wendy Harmer "Fiercely smart and ferociously funny" - Benjamin Law

If women are nice, they are seen as weak and ineffective, but if they are tough, they are labeled a bitch. Hauser proves that women don’t have to sacrifice their values or hide their authentic personalities to be successful. Sharing a wealth of personal anecdotes and time-tested strategies, she shows women how to reclaim “nice” and sidestep regressive stereotypes about what a strong leader looks like. Her accessible advice and hard-won wisdom detail how to balance being empathetic with being decisive, how to rise above the double standards that can box you in, how to cultivate authentic confidence that projects throughout a room, and much more. THE MYTH OF THE NICE GIRL is a refreshing dose of forward-looking feminism that will resonate with smart, professional women who know what they want and are looking for real advice to take their career to the next level without losing themselves in the process.
