Book excerpt: How could General Electric--perhaps America's most iconic corporation--suffer such a swift and sudden fall from grace? This is the definitive history of General Electric's epic decline, as told by the two Wall Street Journal reporters who covered its fall. Since its founding in 1892, GE has been more than just a corporation. For generations, it was job security, a solidly safe investment, and an elite business education for top managers. GE electrified America, powering everything from lightbulbs to turbines, and became fully integrated into the American societal mindset as few companies ever had. And after two decades of leadership under legendary CEO Jack Welch, GE entered the twenty-first century as America's most valuable corporation. Yet, fewer than two decades later, the GE of old was gone. Lights Out examines how Welch's handpicked successor, Jeff Immelt, tried to fix flaws in Welch's profit machine, while stumbling headlong into mistakes of his own. In the end, GE's traditional win-at-all-costs driven culture seemed to lose its direction, which ultimately caused the company's decline on both a personal and organizational scale. Lights Out details how one of America's all-time great companies has been reduced to a cautionary tale for our times.

An NYRB Classics Original The hero of The Invisibility Cloak lives in contemporary Beijing—where everyone is doing their best to hustle up the ladder of success while shouldering an ever-growing burden of consumer goods—and he’s a loser. Well into his forties, he’s divorced (and still doting on his ex), childless, and living with his sister (her husband wants him out) in an apartment at the edge of town with a crack in the wall the wind from the north blows through while he gets by, just, by making customized old-fashioned amplifiers for the occasional rich audio-obsessive. He has contempt for his clients and contempt for himself. The only things he really likes are Beethoven and vintage speakers. Then an old friend tips him off about a special job—a little risky but just don’t ask too many questions—and can it really be that this hopeless loser wins? This provocative and seriously funny exercise in the social fantastic by the brilliantly original Ge Fei, one of China’s finest living writers, is among the most original works of fiction to come out of China in recent years. It is sure to appeal to readers of Haruki Murakami and other fabulists of contemporary irreality.

Book Swope of G E The Story of Gerard Swope and General Electric in American Business

Download or read book Swope of G E The Story of Gerard Swope and General Electric in American Business written by David Loth and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2023-04-19 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] sympathetic but objective biography... Swope the man was quite typical of the executives who managed great American business enterprises a generation or so after their establishment. He had the necessary talents — the total commitment to the job and company, the forceful drive, the passion for reliable data, the ‘fondness for figures’, and the precise and analytical way of thought. He differed in that he was more aware of the needs of his employees and the role his enterprise played in the larger society. More like the present generation in this respect, he was still not an organization man. At G.E., no team fashioned policy. Swope alone made the decisions.” — Alfred Chandler, The Economic History Review “[A] decidedly valuable and creditable [book]... the author very skillfully unfolds the basic facts of Swope’s career... [he] adroitly and succinctly unfolds Swope’s career against the background of the times... It is a tribute to Loth’s ability and courage that he has succeeded in conveying so much information in so short a study... one of the best businessman biographies of the past decade.” — George S. Gibb, The Business History Review

Book Reflections on the Malaysian Economy Post GE 14 Issues and Challenges UUM Press

Download or read book Reflections on the Malaysian Economy Post GE 14 Issues and Challenges UUM Press written by Irwan Shah Zainal Abidin and published by UUM Press. This book was released on 2021-10-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The victory of the Pakatan Harapan (PH), or the Alliance of Hope on May 9, 2018 in the Malaysian 14th General Election (GE14) was not just stunning, but historic. Moreover, the second comeback of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad as the seventh Prime Minister of Malaysia was indeed impressive. The results of the GE14 were clearly against the tide as many political pundits and analysts had predicted a win for the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition with differences only in matters of margins. Similar to Malaysia’s 13th General Election (GE13), which was held on May 5, 2013, the main issue in the GE14 was also about the economy. The rise in cost of living was perhaps the mother of all issues which caused the downfall of the BN government for the first time since independence. Other crucial economic issues centered on alleged corruption practices and manifested through the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) saga. As a new federal power for 22 months, the PH government had a daunting task not just to address economic issues mentioned above, but also the other alleged economic problems which they had highlighted in their election manifesto. On top of that, the PH government had the responsibility to maintain, if not to improve further what the BN government had done to the Malaysian economy in the past, of which World Bank economists described as a success story, “a very strong economy” and “growing towards a high-income.” Post-GE14, what is the state of the Malaysian economy and its direction? What are lessons that can be learned from the PH economic management? And with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government succeeding the federal power in March 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, what are the pressing issues and what needs to be done moving forward especially in the context of the economic challenges arising from the pandemic and post-Covid-19 era? These are some critical questions which this book is trying to address. The book essentially argues for the need to give greater focus to economic issues above anything else by envisioning a new national vision and engineering a new wave of economic structural reforms primarily based on insights from the vast Malaysian economic history lessons
