GENERAL SURVEY OF THE CITY. The Saxon Cantuaria, or City of the Men of Kent, is one of the most interesting and most ancient of English cities. In the words of an old native historian It is seated in a pleasant valley, about a mile wide, between hills of a moderate height and easy ascent, with springs rising from them; besides which, the river Stour runs through it, whose streams, by often dividing and meeting again, water it plentifully, and forming islands of various sizes, in one of which, formerly called Binnewith, the western part of our city stands, make the air good and the soil rich. Such a situation could hardly want inhabitants, while these parts had any inhabitants at all; nor was any spot more likely to unite numbers in forming a neighborhood, or a city, than one so well prepared by nature for defence and cultivation. It was a city or great town in the time of the ancient Britons. The ancient British name seems to have been Durwhern, signifying a swift river; and the Stour, which runs through and by the city in two branches, was rather a rapid stream. Ancient British weapons made of copper, and commonly called 'celts, ' as well as various personal ornaments, are still occasionally found in turning up the soil; and it is probable that the tumulus or mound in the Dane John was of a British origin. The Romans latinized the name of the city into Durovernum; and in their time it was a place of considerable importance; it was here that the Roman military roads to Dover and Lympne, their two principal havens on the Kentish Coast, united. Very many Roman coins have been discovered; and the flat hard Roman brick is to be detected in many of the old buildings, Durovernum is marked conspicuously in the...

Book On Foot to Canterbury

Download or read book On Foot to Canterbury written by Ken Haigh and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting off on foot from Winchester, Ken Haigh hikes across southern England, retracing one of the traditional routes that medieval pilgrims followed to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. Walking in honour of his father, a staunch Anglican who passed away before they could begin their trip together, Haigh wonders: Is there a place in the modern secular world for pilgrimage? On his journey, he sorts through his own spiritual aimlessness while crossing paths with writers like Anthony Trollope, John Keats, Jane Austen, Jonathan Swift, Charles Dickens, and, of course, Geoffrey Chaucer. Part travelogue, part memoir, and part literary history, On Foot to Canterbury is engaging and delightful. "My father didn't need this walk, not the way I do. For him it would have been a fun way to spend some time with his son. He had, I begin to realize, a talent for living in the moment Perhaps a pilgrimage would help me find happiness. Perhaps I could walk my way into a better frame of mind, and somehow along the road to Canterbury I would find a new purpose for my life. It was worth a shot." Audio edition from PRH available from Audible, Kobo, Google, and Apple Books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook details the Pilgrims' Way, an historic pilgrimage route to Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, home of the shrine of the martyred archbishop, St Thomas Becket. The route is described both from Winchester in Hampshire (138 miles) and London's Southwark Cathedral (90¼ miles), with an optional spur to Rochester Cathedral. With relatively easy walking on ancient byways, the route from Winchester is presented in 15 stages of 5-14 miles: it can be comfortably completed in under a fortnight. It follows a major chalk ridge through scenic countryside, taking in characterful towns and villages and historic churches. The route from Southwark is described in 10 stages and includes a visit to the ruined Lesnes Abbey. Detailed route description is accompanied by 1:50,000 OS mapping, advice on making the most of a trip and information on the historical background to the pilgrimage, key historical figures and local points of interest. Accommodation listings and details of facilities and transport links can be found in the appendices. Pilgrimages to Becket's shrine began within a few years of the his death in 1170, although Canterbury was a popular destination even before this time due to the nearby shrine of St Augustine. The route has featured in literature, drama and film, and forms the setting for Geoffrey Chaucer's famous Middle English work, The Canterbury Tales.
