Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New American Government, and Its Work The Theory of Checks and Balances - The great changes just described have all been opposed to the spirit and intentions of the men who drafted our form of government. If there was one fear that animated all members of the Convention of 1787, it was the dread of highly concentrated power. AS Englishmen they had long believed in the doctrine that government should be built up of Checks and Balances, that is, every authority, oflicer or legislative body should have some other authority which would check its power and prevent it from becoming absolute or despotic. One form of this doctrine is the theory of Division of Powers. A brilliant French writer, in a book 1 which was read and studied carefully by influential members of the Convention of 1787, de clared that the division of government into the executive, legisla tive, and judicial departments was a necessary means of preserving the liberty of the citizens against Oppression. His method of rea soning was simple. He asks, in what country is the freedom of the citizen best preserved? At the time of writing England was un doubtedly the freest country in the world. How is this freedom of the citizen secured in England? The author's answer was that the British government at that time separated sharply the executive power of the King from the legislative power of Parliament and the judicial power exercised by judges appointed for life. N 0 other country at that time carried this division of powers as far as did Great Britain. Montesquieu therefore concluded that the division of powers was the most effective means of preserving the liberty of the citizen from government despotism. The Fathers followed this theory faithfully in 1787. The three departments were sepa rated as far as possible, and where their co - operation was necessary, they were set in balance as checks against each other. It will be noticed that the underlying motive of the Fathers was the fear of 7 oppression. Briefly expressed it is: Let us divide governmental power into minute particles, giving a small part to each authority so that none may become supreme or even dangerous. Download or read book The Essentials of American Government Classic Reprint written by Francis Newton Thorpe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of American Government It is somewhat presumptuous to attempt to reduce American Government to its essential principles. The subject is difficult - more or less technical and quite beyond the compass of any one book. Therefore, in writing the present volume, the author cites many books in which the matter under immediate consideration is discussed at length. The rule of rules for the student of American government is Multum, not Multa. There is peril, if only the principle be considered, that what knowledge is gained will be an acquaintance with abstractions; if the example, or illustration alone is considered, the peril is of a memory of facts more or less temporary, or isolated. Government is essentially organic in nature and must be studied as an organism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Government and Politics IN this edition I have followed the lines of the revision of November, 1913. I have vainly hoped for, but not yet found, leisure in which to recast the entire text. The continued demand for the book is some proof that it serves many people in its present general form, and therefore I venture, for a while longer, to let the main structure stand just as it was conceived ten years ago. I have, however, eliminated a large mass of details. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But an over-extended Literature commonly defeats its own ends. The common student especially is lost in the multitude of titles cited. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in American Government The purpose of this volume is to bring together a number of articles and documents which are not readily available for classroom use but which are of value because they show how the government functions. Each selection has been chosen because of its vigor, its thoroughness, and the freshness of its point of attack. Most of the readings have been put to the test with a group of college sophomores and juniors in the School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University, who have responded to the material with more enthusiasm and interest than to the text-books. As far as possible, selections have been reprinted which show the relationship of economics, sociol ogy, history, and psychology to the problems of government. Book New American History and Government Outlines Classic Reprint

Download or read book New American History and Government Outlines Classic Reprint written by Arthur Raymond McCook and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New American History and Government Outlines History is the study of the life of a people. "History is the biography of a society." "History is the essence of innumerable biographies." "Through the ages one increasing purpose runs." "The present is the fruit of the past and the germs of the future." "History knows not if, and might have been is a form of words unwritten in her book of phrases." - Ridpath. Europe Before the Discovery of America Peoples supposed to have visited America before 1492: Chinese, Egyptians. Phoenicians and Greeks. Northmen, 1000. Events hindering further visits: Invasions of Goths, Vandals and Huns, 350 to 476. Establishment of new nations. Conquest among nations. Lack of geographical knowledge. Causes leading to a revival of interest in new lands: Commercial ambition. Religious zeal. The crusades. The renaissance. What ancient Europe sent to the East: Metals, wood, pitch, woolen cloth, linen, black lead, wine and glassware. What ancient Europe brought from the East: Silks, cotton cloth and other fine dry goods. Dye woods and drugs. Precious stones and ivory. Spices and perfumes. Cities which controlled trade with the East: Venice, by way of the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Indian ocean. Genoa, by way of Bosporus and Black Sea, and then by caravan to the East. Antioch, by way of Euphrates valley and Persian gulf. What changed trade routes: In 1453 the Turks captured Constantinople and refused to let the ships of other nations pass through the Bosporus. This closed Genoa's route, gave Venice a monopoly and made a new route desirable. New routes tried: Passage around Africa by Diaz, a Portuguese sailor, who succeeded in sailing around the south cape, which he named Cape of Storms, but the name was changed to Cape of Good Hope by King John of Portugal. Columbus' plan: To sail west until he reached China or India. "The great canon of history is its continuity."
