Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naval History of the United States, Vol. 1 N may, 1636, a stanch little sloop of some twenty tons was standing along Long Island Sound on a trading expedition. At her helm stood John Gallop, a sturdy colonist, and a skilful seaman, who earned his bread by trading with the Indians that at that time thronged the shores of the Sound, and eagerly seized any opportunity to traffic with the white men from the colonies of Plymouth or New Amsterdam. The colonists sent out beads, knives, bright clothes, and sometimes, unfortunately, rum and other strong drinks. The Indians in exchange offered skins and peltries of all kinds; and, as their simple natures had not been schooled to nice calculations of values, the traffic was one of great profit to the more shrewd whites. But the trade was not without its perils. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Naval History of the American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 IN its various aspects our struggle for independence has from the beginning excited the attention and received the critical study of historical scholars, and is a never-failing source of discussion and spec ulation. From social, commercial, political, diplo matic, and military points of view this interesting field has been worked over most thoroughly. Yet the maritime activities of the war, excepting the episodes, have been subjected to no ve inquiry, although the importance of their bearing upon military movements, foreign re lations, and commercial intercourse is manifest. In the archives of our country and in those of England and France, as well as in private collections, news papers, and elsewhere, will be found a large amount of material hitherto only partially utilized. In the preparation of this work these original sources of information have been explored in the effort to meet in some measure the present need of more adequate treatment. Undertaken at an early period of the conflict, when its duration could not be calculated, the work has been steadily prosecuted, chapter by chapter contemporaneously with the rapid march of events. Relying mostly upon original documents which will always retain their, value, the narrative has been proportioned to the importance and length of the struggle; while the Artists have presented in a'series of more than seventy engravings, the most remarkable incidents and most important personages who have figured in the national history during this unprecedented struggle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naval Miscellany, Vol. 1 IN the course of the last few years I have received from different quarters and have collected a variety Of documents, individually too short for a volume, and yet of such interest as to render it very desirable to lay them before the Society. In considering how best to do this, the Council resolved that they would from time to time issue a miscellaneous volume Of such papers. This is the first. In preparing the several items Of it for the press, I have had the able assistance of Mr. Corbett. Who, fresh from his studies Of Drake and Drake's successors, took charge of the Voyage to Cadiz, ' which, by itself, with its unique map and representations of early divisional flags, would make the volume noteworthy. For the editing Of the other papers I am personally responsible, though I have unsparingly taxed the assistance of many friends to whom I have referred points Of difficulty. To them and to the owners Of the papers I return my warmest thanks for the gift - not to me, but to the Society, and through it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Army and Navy Quarterly, Vol. 1: January, 1885 This compulsory adoption of armor, as well as of an iron hull, is a matter of the greatest possible importance and significance. The present condition and the future development of our naval power can only be properly understood by those who keep it clearly and carefully in mind. In fact, I doubt if there be any other question before the public at the present moment, in dealing with which it is so necessary to keep its recent history well in View. It will therefore be worth while to look back a little at our own experience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The New American Navy Vol 1

Download or read book The New American Navy Vol 1 written by John D. Long and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New American Navy, Vol. 1: Illustrated With Drawings by Henry Reuterdahl and With Photographs Since the war with Spain our navy has stead ily strengthened the hold which it already had on popular sentiment. Its brilliant record at that time, its substantial consummation of the war by the unprecedented thoroughness of its victories at Manila and Santiago, the clean and creditable conduct of its commissioned and civilian officials in charge of its business affairs, and the neces sity of its expanded equipment and service by reason of our added insular possessions, have stimulated the feeling of national interest in it and dependence on it. These have also led to most generous appropriations by successive con gresses for its continued increase in officers and men, in ships, and in all the facilities of naval construction. The object of this volume is to give information as to the start and progress of this increase, the development into What is now called the New Navy, as well as to tell of its recent exploits. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fast-paced narrative charts the history of the US Navy from its birth during the American Revolution through to its current superpower status. The story highlights iconic moments of great drama pivotal to the nation's fortunes: John Paul Jones' attacks on the British during the Revolution, the Barbary Wars, and the arduous conquest of Iwo Jima. American Naval History: A Very Short Introduction illuminates the changes--technological, institutional, and functional--of the U.S. Navy from its days as a small frigate navy through the age of steam and steel to the modern era of electronics and missiles. Renowned naval historian Craig L. Symonds captures the evolving culture of the navy and debates between policymakers about what role the institution should play in world affairs. Internal and external challenges dramatically altered the size and character of the navy, with long periods of quiet inertia alternating with periods of crisis that spurred rapid expansion. The history of the navy reflects the history of the nation as a whole, and its many changes derive in large part from the changing role of the United States itself.
