Book The Inheritance of Stem Rust Puccinia Graminis Graminicola Resistance in Perennial Ryegrass Lolium Perenne

Download or read book The Inheritance of Stem Rust Puccinia Graminis Graminicola Resistance in Perennial Ryegrass Lolium Perenne written by Crystal A. Rose and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three stem rust Puccinia graminis graminicola, resistant sources of perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne, 4A, 48A, and 77A, were crossed in a partial diallel design with one susceptible source, MP-2, resulting in six crosses excluding reciprocals. The F1's and cloned parental populations were inoculated in the field and rated on a stem rust scale of 1-9 with 9 best (immune), once a week for five weeks. Maturity stage ratings of 1-6 with 1 during the vegetative stage and 6 at full maturity were also taken once a week. Maturity stages were not highly correlated with stern rust reactions except during the bootstage and early anthesis. Genetic differences were found between parental sources for stem rust reactions. Frequency distributions based on stem rust reactions among the F1 progeny populations suggested that resistance was quantitatively inherited with minor and possibly some major genes acting in an additive manner. Transgressive segregation toward susceptibility and slow rusting types were evident. Broad sense heritability estimates for stem rust resistance varied depending on the particular cross. The estimates suggested that there is considerable genetic variability for resistance between the parental lines. Selection would be more effective in the bootstage stage prior to anthesis when the heritability estimates were found to be higher. As the inoculum increased in the later stages of plant development, the resistance appeared to be overcome by the spore load. Seedling stem rust reactions were found to differ from adult plant reactions in the F1 generations of the six crosses in this study. In the F2 generation with open pollination of the F1 parents a gradient of percent susceptible seedlings occurred. Results of this study indicate a potential for developing stem rust resistant varieties with several minor and some major genes for increased longevity of resistance.

Book Disease Resistance in Plants

Download or read book Disease Resistance in Plants written by J.E. Vanderplank and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disease Resistance in Plants, Second Edition, looks at genetic, epidemiologic, biochemical, and biometric principles for developing new cultivars possessing genetic resistance to diseases. It examines the nature of disease resistance and resistance genes, and it highlights the importance of stabilizing selection, sugar, biotrophy, and necrotrophy to obtain the greatest possible yields. Organized into 17 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of disease resistance in plants and the ways to develop disease-resistant variants. It then discusses unspecific resistance; the resistance gene paradox; susceptibility and resistance within narrow host taxa; phenotypic variation and gene numbers in host plants; discontinuous variation and cytoplasmic inheritance; and experimental difficulties in partitioning variance. The reader is also introduced to epistasis and the structure of virulence in pathogens; the notion of physiological race; how the pathogen adapts to the host; mutation in the pathogen from avirulence to virulence; horizontal and vertical resistance to disease and its epidemiological effects; and the link between protein polymorphism and vertical resistance. In addition, the book discusses genes for susceptibility in the host versus genes for avirulence (or virulence) in the pathogen; sink-induced loss of resistance; high-sugar disease processes and biotrophy; slow rusting of cereal crops; plant resistance against endemic disease; and the accumulation of resistance genes in heterogeneous host populations. This book will be useful to plant pathologists and plant breeders.

Book The Wheat Rusts Breeding for Resistance

Download or read book The Wheat Rusts Breeding for Resistance written by Douglas R. Knott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this book was conceived by the late Dr. Irvine A. Watson of the University of Sydney, and he developed the first outline. I was then invited by Dr. Watson to share in its writing. Unfortunately, shortly there after, recurring heart problems forced him to curtail his activities and with draw from the project. He died before the book could be completed. Dr. Watson's intention was to produce a very practical book that would provide wheat breeders with all of the information necessary to breed success fully for resistance to the three wheat rusts: leaf rust, stem rust, and yellow rust. It was intended to be very specific in describing procedures to be used and at the same time provide all of the necessary theoretical background. I hope that I have been successful in meeting these objectives. The book assumes that the reader has some knowledge of plant pathology, genetics, and plant breeding. Extensive use has been made of the literature, but it was not possible to cite all of the papers on a given topic. In making a choice, an attempt was made to choose key papers or more recent papers that provided references to the earlier literature. Acknowledgements This book was written partly at the University of Saskatchewan and partly at the University of California, Davis, while I was on a sabbatical leave.
