Book excerpt: Since Darwin, Biology has been framed on the idea of evolution by natural selection, which has profoundly influenced the scientific and philosophical comprehension of biological phenomena and of our place in Nature. This book argues that contemporary biology should progress towards and revolve around an even more fundamental idea, that of autonomy. Biological autonomy describes living organisms as organised systems, which are able to self-produce and self-maintain as integrated entities, to establish their own goals and norms, and to promote the conditions of their existence through their interactions with the environment. Topics covered in this book include organisation and biological emergence, organisms, agency, levels of autonomy, cognition, and a look at the historical dimension of autonomy. The current development of scientific investigations on autonomous organisation calls for a theoretical and philosophical analysis. This can contribute to the elaboration of an original understanding of life - including human life - on Earth, opening new perspectives and enabling fecund interactions with other existing theories and approaches. This book takes up the challenge.

Book On the Origin of Autonomy

Download or read book On the Origin of Autonomy written by Bernd Rosslenbroich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes features of autonomy and integrates them into the recent discussion of factors in evolution. In recent years ideas about major transitions in evolution are undergoing a revolutionary change. They include questions about the origin of evolutionary innovation, their genetic and epigenetic background, the role of the phenotype and of changes in ontogenetic pathways. In the present book, it is argued that it is likewise necessary to question the properties of these innovations and what was qualitatively generated during the macroevolutionary transitions. The author states that a recurring central aspect of macroevolutionary innovations is an increase in individual organismal autonomy whereby it is emancipated from the environment with changes in its capacity for flexibility, self-regulation and self-control of behavior. The first chapters define the concept of autonomy and examine its history and its epistemological context. Later chapters demonstrate how changes in autonomy took place during the major evolutionary transitions and investigate the generation of organs and physiological systems. They synthesize material from various disciplines including zoology, comparative physiology, morphology, molecular biology, neurobiology and ethology. It is argued that the concept is also relevant for understanding the relation of the biological evolution of man to his cultural abilities. Finally the relation of autonomy to adaptation, niche construction, phenotypic plasticity and other factors and patterns in evolution is discussed. The text has a clear perspective from the context of systems biology, arguing that the generation of biological autonomy must be interpreted within an integrative systems approach.

Book Natural Selection in the Wild MPB 21 Volume 21

Download or read book Natural Selection in the Wild MPB 21 Volume 21 written by John A. Endler and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural selection is an immense and important subject, yet there have been few attempts to summarize its effects on natural populations, and fewer still which discuss the problems of working with natural selection in the wild. These are the purposes of John Endler's book. In it, he discusses the methods and problems involved in the demonstration and measurement of natural selection, presents the critical evidence for its existence, and places it in an evolutionary perspective. Professor Endler finds that there are a remarkable number of direct demonstrations of selection in a wide variety of animals and plants. The distribution of observed magnitudes of selection in natural populations is surprisingly broad, and it overlaps extensively the range of values found in artificial selection. He argues that the common assumption that selection is usually weak in natural populations is no longer tenable, but that natural selection is only one component of the process of evolution; natural selection can explain the change of frequencies of variants, but not their origins.

Book Natural Selection and Social Theory

Download or read book Natural Selection and Social Theory written by Robert Trivers and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-09-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Trivers is a pioneering figure in the field of sociobiology. For Natural Selection and Social Theory, he has selected eleven of his most influential papers, including several classic papers from the early 1970s on the evolution of reciprocal altruism, parent-offspring conflicts, and asymmetry in sexual selection, which helped to establish the centrality of sociobiology, as well as some of his later work on deceit in signalling, sex antagonistic genes, and imprinting. Trivers introduces each paper, setting them in their contemporary context, and critically evaluating them in the light of subsequent work and further developments. The result is a unique portrait of the intellectual development of sociobiology, with valuable insights for evolutionary biology, anthropology, and psychology.

Book Save Our Selves from Science Gone Wrong

Download or read book Save Our Selves from Science Gone Wrong written by Shaun Johnston and published by Evolved Self Pub. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brisk and engaging manifesto reveals natural selection to be the flawed product of a science hobbled from birth by denial of the self. After pointing out a dozen dubious assumptions lying behind natural selection Johnston shows how sounder assumptions can lead to better theories. He ends by calling for popular opposition to natural selection and for scientists to come up with sounder mechanisms. Until then, he insists, no mechanism of evolution at all should be taught in the science classroom. This is no creationist tract. In his demonstration of how to arrive at new mechanisms Johnston conjures up a genome-self able to literally dream up new species, a mechanism much more corrosive of the supernatural than Darwinism. Mary Midgley, Gifford Lecture 1989-90, "Science As Salvation," and author of "Evolution as a Religion: Strange Hopes and Stranger Fears." "Shaun Johnston raises many fascinating questions, asking how it is that many scientists seem to find it so embarrassingly difficult to think about any sort of consciousness, especially their own, that they'd rather say it isn't there?... But they badly need to be pressed to roll up their sleeves and face it directly. So, all good wishes to Johnston as he pesters them to get over their scruples!" Robert G. B. Reid, Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, author of "Evolutionary Theory: The Unfinished Synthesis" and "Biological Emergences: Evolution by Natural Experiment." "In "Save Our Selves from Science Gone Wrong," Shaun Johnston presents selectionism as the science that has gone wrong, corrupting biology as well as pertinent aspects of sociology, philosophy, and the popular media. Such a strong voice deserves attention. Responding to the question "What do you put in its place?" Johnston begins with the consciousness of the individual self." John Horgan, author of "The End of Science: Facing the Limits of Knowledge in the Twilight of the Scientific Age." "Your take on Darwinism...is lively and provocative."

Book Evolving Ourselves

Download or read book Evolving Ourselves written by Juan Enriquez and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Darwin were alive today, he would likely recognize that technology has evolved so far, and so fast, that the origin, evolution, and future of life itself is no longer just driven by natural selection and random mutation. Why are genetic conditions like autism, asthma, and allergies on the rise at unprecedented, biologically impossible speeds? What traits does our world select for, and what does that mean for us? Will our children be a different species? Today’s humans have altered the nature of our world so much, and developed such profound capabilities for re-crafting our bodies and environment, that random mutation and natural selection are no longer the primary determinants of which species survives and how they change over time. The nature of the evolution of our world is now increasingly defined and driven by: Un-Natural Selection-- where the traits being selected for have little to nothing to do with our ability to survive and thrive--and Non-Random Mutation-- in which drastic changes to our environment wreak havoc on what gene are expressed and passed down. Evolving Ourselves is the story of how our massive human perturbation and, increasingly, our specific designs and desires are altering life on Earth. It is a chronicle of where our remarkable new capabilities for altering our bodies, other living creatures, and our environment are taking us in the near term, and introduces the possibility that we might cause our own extinction in the long run.

Book What Makes Biology Unique

Download or read book What Makes Biology Unique written by Ernst Mayr and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-16 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, a collection of essays written by the most eminent evolutionary biologist of the twentieth century, explores biology as an autonomous science, offers insights on the history of evolutionary thought, critiques the contributions of philosophy to the science of biology, and comments on several of the major ongoing issues in evolutionary theory. Notably, Mayr explains that Darwin's theory of evolution is actually five separate theories, each with its own history, trajectory and impact. Natural selection is a separate idea from common descent, and from geographic speciation, and so on. A number of the perennial Darwinian controversies may well have been caused by the confounding of the five separate theories into a single composite. Those interested in evolutionary theory, or the philosophy and history of science will find useful ideas in this book, which should appeal to virtually anyone with a broad curiosity about biology.

Book Natural Selection and Genetic Drift

Download or read book Natural Selection and Genetic Drift written by Joshua Richardson and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural selection is the process which, being the most important factor of evolution, promotes rising of adaptability and prevents destructive consequences of all other processes. The concept of natural selection is a discordant problem of evolutionary human genetics. Despite popularity of a hypothesis of "neutral evolution", the majority of scientists consider that selection has played main role in evolution of species and has generated all bio-logical diversity of human populations. This book presents research on natural selection and genetic drift. The author of the first chapter provides an all-embracing macroevolutionary perspective on the processes of the evolution of life and culture on earth. The author investigates a complementary form of natural selection that diverges from the traditional form in that it is acting independently of the external environment. The next chapter discusses natural selection and diabetes mellitus. The last chapter examines how the genetic drift among native people from South American the Gran Chaco region affects interleukin 1 receptor antagonist variation.
