Book The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

Download or read book The Most Beautiful Girl in the World written by Sarah Banet-Weiser and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarah Banet-Weiser complicates the standard feminist take on beauty pageants in this intriguing look at a hotly contested but enduringly popular American ritual. She focuses on the Miss America pageant in particular, considering its claim to be an accurate representation of the diversity of contemporary American women. Exploring the cultural constructions and legitimations that go on during the long process of the pageant, Banet-Weiser depicts the beauty pageant stage as a place where concerns about national identity, cultural hopes and desires, and anxieties about race and gender are crystallized and condensed. The beauty pageant, she convincingly demonstrates, is a profoundly political arena deserving of serious study. Drawing on cultural criticism, ethnographic research, and interviews with pageant participants and officials, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World illustrates how contestants invent and reinvent themselves while articulating the female body as a national body. Banet-Weiser finds that most pageants are characterized by the ambivalence of contemporary "liberal" feminism, which encourages individual achievement, self-determination, and civic responsibility, while simultaneously promoting very conventional notions of beauty. The book explores the many different aspects of the Miss America pageant, including the swimsuit, the interview, and the talent competitions. It also takes a closer look at some extraordinary Miss Americas, such as Bess Myerson, the first Jewish Miss America; Vanessa Williams, the first African American Miss America; and Heather Whitestone, the first Miss America with a disability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This true story of a Hollywood sex symbol’s tumultuous life is “a real page-turner. Now, here is a book that would make a great movie” (London Daily Mail). Hedy Lamarr’s life was punctuated by salacious rumors and public scandal, but it was her stunning looks and classic Hollywood glamour that continuously captivated audiences. Born Hedwig Kiesler, she escaped an unhappy marriage with arms dealer Fritz Mandl in Austria to try her luck in Hollywood, where her striking appearance made her a screen legend. Her notorious nude role in the erotic Czech film Ecstasy, as well as her work with Cecil B. DeMille (Samson and Delilah), Walter Wanger (Algiers), and studio executive Louis B. Mayer catapulted her alluring and provocative reputation as a high-profile sex symbol. In this biography, Ruth Barton explores the many facets of the screen legend—including her life as an inventor. Working with avant-garde composer and film scorer George Antheil, Lamarr helped to develop and patent spread spectrum technology, which is still used in mobile phone communication. However, despite her screen persona and scientific success, Lamarr’s personal life included a string of failed marriages, a lawsuit against her publisher regarding her sensational autobiography, and shoplifting charges that made her infamous beyond her celebrity. Drawing on extensive research into both the recorded truths of Lamarr’s life and the rumors that made her notorious, Barton recognizes Lamarr’s contributions to both film and technology while revealing the controversial and conflicted woman underneath.

Book The Most Beautiful Women in History

Download or read book The Most Beautiful Women in History written by Robert Richard Kiss and published by Mediacom. This book was released on 2012 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a uniquely interesting experiment. The author decided to publish the imaginary photos of legendary women, from Helen of Troy to Cleopatra. He shows how the most beautiful women in history are perceived by a European journalist and writer. He attempts to portray what was Sappho like and how would the wife of the last Chinese emperor look like if she lived in our time. This book is about the women who have influenced the course of history with their charm, exquisite taste, wisdom, sophistication, treachery, evilness or noble deeds. The women, who have contributed to the world we live in now. The last page is left blank, so readers can put there the picture of their choice and describe the woman who is most important to them. The woman they think is the most beautiful and adorable on earth and without whom the world would be a darker place. The author, Dr. Kiss Róbert Richard is a Prima Primissima Award and Pulitzer Memorial Prize winning journalist. He wrote five books on the fantastic hotels of the world and a book about the most beautiful islands on earth. His articles appear in newspapers, radio and television shows in five countries. He is married; his wife was one of the models in this book.
