Book Interrelationships of Fishes

Download or read book Interrelationships of Fishes written by Melanie L.J. Stiassny and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1996-11-08 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising by far the largest and most diverse group of vertebrates, fishes occupy a broad swathe of habitats ranging from the deepest ocean abyss to the highest mountain lakes. Such incredible ecological diversity and the resultant variety in lifestyle, anatomy, physiology and behavior, make unraveling the evolutionary history of fishes a daunting task. The successor of a classic volume by the same title, Interrelationships of Fishes, provides the latest in the "state of the art" of systematics and classification for many of the major groups of fishes. In providing a sound phylogenetic framework from leading authorities in the field, this book is an indispensable reference for a broad range of biologists, especially students of fish behavior, anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, genetics and ecology--in fact, anyone who wishes to interpret their work on fishes in an evolutionary context. Provides thorough and comprehensive treatment of the Phylogency of fishes Assembles an International team of expert contributors Useful to a wide variety of fish biologists

Book Foundations of Systematics and Biogeography

Download or read book Foundations of Systematics and Biogeography written by David M. Williams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-19 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone interested in comparative biology or the history of science will find this myth-busting work genuinely fascinating. It draws attention to the seminal studies and important advances that have shaped systematic and biogeographic thinking. It traces concepts in homology and classification from the 19th century to the present through the provision of a unique anthology of scientific writings from Goethe, Agassiz, Owen, Naef, Zangerl and Nelson, among others.

Book Evolution of the Vertebrate Ear

Download or read book Evolution of the Vertebrate Ear written by Jennifer A. Clack and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of vertebrate hearing is of considerable interest in the hearing community. However, there has never been a volume that has focused on the paleontological evidence for the evolution of hearing and the ear, especially from the perspective of some of the leading paleontologists and evolutionary biologists in the world. Thus, this volume is totally unique, and takes a perspective that has never been taken before. It brings to the fore some of the most recent discoveries among fossil taxa, which have demonstrated the sort of detailed information that can be derived from the fossil record, illuminating the evolutionary pathways this sensory system has taken and the diversity it had achieved.

Book The Origin of Higher Clades

Download or read book The Origin of Higher Clades written by Rui Diogo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides insight on the osteology, myology, phylogeny and evolution of Osteichthyes. It not only provides an extensive cladistic analysis of osteichthyan higher-level inter-relationships based on a phylogenetic comparison of 356 characters in 80 extant and fossil terminal taxa representing all major groups of Osteichthyes, but also analyses various terminal taxa and osteological characters. And also provides a general discussion on issues such as the comparative anatomy, homologies and evolution of osteichthyan cranial and pectoral muscles, the development of zebrafish cephalic muscles and the implications for evolutionary developmental studies, the origin homologies and evolution of one of the most peculiar and enigmatic structural complexes of osteichthyans, the Weberian apparatus, and the use of myological versus osteological characters in phylogenetic reconstructions.

Book Intersexuality in the Animal Kingdom

Download or read book Intersexuality in the Animal Kingdom written by R. Reinboth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Richard Goldschmidt' coined the term "intersexuality" in 1915, he intended it to apply to normally dioecious species which exhibit some kind of mixture between male and female characters. However, as knowledge of the bewildering variability present in the sexual orga nization of members of the animal kingdom has increased, the original meaning of the word has changed. Today many authors define inter sexuality as "the presence of both male and female characteristics, or of intermediate sexual characteristics, in a single individual".2 This more extensive and widely accepted concept justifies the title of our book •. Among all the anatomical and physiological features of living organisms the reproductive system has a unique importance for the perpetuation of the species. Conversely, reproductive processes are of little or no account for the viability of the individual. Therefore, within the framework of general biology reproduction has all too often been looked at solely from the point of view of genetics. Lively discussions about genotypic versus phenotypic sex determination long dominated the sci entific literature on sexuality in animals; this one-sided emphasis has tended to obscure many important facets of an organism's ability to reproduce. Recent developments in current biological research have brought the classic problem of sex differentiation into focus again, and the rapid progress being made in comparative endocrinology has added a new di mension to the study of reproductive biology.

Book Notes on the Structure and Relationships of the Alepocephaloid Fishes

Download or read book Notes on the Structure and Relationships of the Alepocephaloid Fishes written by Peter Humphry Greenwood and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The alepocephaloid fishes, which have had a long, uncertain taxonomic history, are compared with members of the Argentinoidei. The two groups share a distinctive pharyngobranchial structure not known to occur in any other major group of fishes. Study of the caudal skeleton of alepocephaloids and argentinoids reveals additional trenchant similarities between these two groups. Other anatomical information is consistent with the hypothesis that alepocephaloids and argentinoids form a monophyletic assemblage. The two groups are included as two superfamilies, the Alepocephaloidea and Argentinoidea, of the suborder Argentinoidei. Suggested rearrangements of members of the Argentinoidea also are propsed"--Page 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of gonorynchiform morphology and systematic inter- and intra-relationships has proven vital to a better understanding of the evolution of lower teleosts in general, and more specifically of groups such as the clupeiforms (e.g., herrings and anchovies), and ostariophysans (e.g., carps, minnows and catfishes). This book examines the
