Book excerpt: By a deep and careful analysis of the text, enabling a new printing history of Leviathan to be constructed, this edition demonstrates that the traditional picture is substantially wrong. Both the Bear and Ornaments editions contain corrections and changes by Hobbes himself and are therefore central to reconstructing his text. In their substantial Introduction the editors examine all previous editions of Leviathan (as well as the manuscript copy prepared for Hobbes as a presentation copy for the King), throwing light on its history and calling into question the assumptions of previous editors. They thus provide an entirely new picture of its production. Schuhmann and Rogers also make full use of the Latin edition of Leviathan, published in 1668 when Hobbes was 80 years old. Through these new perspectives they are able to offer the first complete critical edition to take proper account of the publishing history and of Hobbes's own wishes. The result is as definitive an edition of Leviathan as modern scholarship can provide. >

Book Performing the Secular

Download or read book Performing the Secular written by Milija Gluhovic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a foreword from Rustom Bharucha, this book is a timely anthology which aims to unsettle our habituated modes of thinking about the place of the secular in cultural productions. The last decade alone has witnessed many religious protests against cultural productions, which have led, in some cases, to the closure of theatre and opera performances. Threats to artists led to the exile of Indian painter, MF Husain, and murder of Dutch film-maker Theo van Gogh, the controversy over the depiction of the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in 2005 led to the cancellation of performances of Mozart’s Idomeneo for the season. Offering fresh and provocative readings that probe the limits and promise of secularity in relation to questions of performance, politics, and the public sphere, this book will be invaluable to scholars who seek to understand the dramatic rise of politicized theology in our new century.

Download or read book Gassendi s Ethics written by Lisa T. Sarasohn and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to explore the ethical thought of Pierre Gassendi, the seventeenth-century French priest who rehabilitated Epicurean philosophy in the Western tradition. Lisa T. Sarasohn's discussion of the relationship between Gassendi's philosophy of nature and his ethics discloses the underlying unity of his philosophy and elucidates this critical figure in the intellectual revolution.Sarasohn demonstrates that Gassendi's ethics was an important part of his attempt to Christianize Epicureanism. She shows how Gassendi integrated ideas of human freedom into a neo-Epicurean ethic where pleasure is the highest good, yet maintained a consistent belief in Christian providence. These views challenged what were then the new systems of philosophy, Hobbesian materialism and Cartesian rationalism. Sarasohn places Gassendi in his historical and intellectual context, considering him in relation to contemporary philosophers and within the patronage system that conditioned his own freedom. She investigates the links between his ethical thought and philosophy of science and makes sense of his attacks on astrology. Finally, her work clarifies Pierre Gassendi's considerable influence on seventeenth-century ethical and political philosophy, particularly on the work of John Locke—and thus on the whole English liberal tradition in political philosophy.

Book Paul Henri Thiry d Holbach s and Richard Dawkins s Comprehensive Scientism

Download or read book Paul Henri Thiry d Holbach s and Richard Dawkins s Comprehensive Scientism written by Gerold Reisinger and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science unbound: In this book, the author explores Comprehensive Scientism by juxtaposing the philosophies of one challenging figure of the European Enlightenment with those of a legendary evolutionary biologist. Paul Henri Thiry d’Holbach lived from 1723-1789 and wrote one monumental work known as ‘the Bible of atheists’. Richard Dawkins, a modern-day scientist and self-declared atheist, is currently galvanizing the secularist movement’. Gerold Reisinger’s treatise aims to uncover the motives of d’Holbach and Dawkins for claiming that science is the only source of knowledge to defend atheism. Various aspects of their forms of scientism are outlined and elucidated in relation to the comprehensive form that combines epistemological, ontological, moral and existential scientism. Basic research by Stenmark and Peels frames this philosophical work’s analysis and comparison of the two iconic philosophers and their writings. The book shows that scientism is what unites their positions and proves to be as powerful a motive today as it was in the 18th century to render science the know-all and be-all of truth and reality and thereby attempt to obviate religion for humankind.

Book The Papers of Alexander Hamilton

Download or read book The Papers of Alexander Hamilton written by Alexander Hamilton and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1961 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the puzzling phenomenon of new veiling practices among lower middle class women in Cairo, Egypt. Although these women are part of a modernizing middle class, they also voluntarily adopt a traditional symbol of female subordination. How can this paradox be explained? An explanation emerges which reconceptualizes what appears to be reactionary behavior as a new style of political struggle--as accommodating protest. These women, most of them clerical workers in the large government bureaucracy, are ambivalent about working outside the home, considering it a change which brings new burdens as well as some important benefits. At the same time they realize that leaving home and family is creating an intolerable situation of the erosion of their social status and the loss of their traditional identity. The new veiling expresses women's protest against this. MacLeod argues that the symbolism of the new veiling emerges from this tense subcultural dilemma, involving elements of both resistance and acquiescence.
